There Is No Guarantee That the Future of Comics Will Be Japanese, but Manga Keeps a Good Head Start at the Head of the Market www.smartymagazine.com The manga keeps a good lead at the head of the market by Bubble "There is no guarantee that the future of comics will be Japanese, but manga keeps a good head start at the head of the market" Selection N°101 Mangasia by Paul Gravett Small pause in our series of files to discover comics and discover comics (while waiting to discover manga of course) to tackle a work which will be impossible to circumvent in June 2018. A large exhibition of 281 original drawings and 200 books, plus facsimiles and objects related to this industry will be in Nantes from June to next September. reading and leafing through the 300 pages of this impressive exhibition catalogue, published last October, took me some time to be able to tell you about it, and today I offer you an overview of this very rich book. The author Paul Gravett explores the history and major themes of Asian comics in Japan, China & Korea, the three main historical producers, but also Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and North Korea. This work of curation is doubled by comments on the situation of the internal country or in relation to its neighbours which make it possible to better understand how the medium evolved ( distractions, official propaganda, act of resistance, questioning on society, porosity of cultures and influences...) It is interested in the definition of the word manga, what it encompasses and what could have been the first works qualified as such or of its influences in the various countries. And finally to the mangaka profession and what it implies. Also rich in its iconography, it is above all a picture book composed of many unpublished material. Of course, for the enlightened amateurs and the great readers of manga, several passages will be familiar to them on the Japanese authors who made the history of the comic strip, but you will be surprised, like me, in front of the immensity of the stories to which we do not have access.to complete this visual exploration, we will find chronologies and maps as well as selections on the objects around the medium. The presentation and the articulation around themes may seem a little confusing when reading the book, it should be kept in mind that the book accompanies the exhibition and that it is very interesting to read it in disorder by picking here and there while letting oneself be carried by the images before returning to the text in its continuity. Only book that takes seriously the question of Asian comics outside manga and gives a fascinating light for those who love the genre. In any case, it's been several weeks since I've had enough of looking through it, I can't wait for the exhibition! • The Symbol of the Dragon and Ways to Shape Cultural Identities in Institute Working Vietnam and Japan Paper Series
2015 - HARVARD-YENCHING THE SYMBOL OF THE DRAGON AND WAYS TO SHAPE CULTURAL IDENTITIES IN INSTITUTE WORKING VIETNAM AND JAPAN PAPER SERIES Nguyen Ngoc Tho | University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City THE SYMBOL OF THE DRAGON AND WAYS TO SHAPE 1 CULTURAL IDENTITIES IN VIETNAM AND JAPAN Nguyen Ngoc Tho University of Social Sciences and Humanities Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City Abstract Vietnam, a member of the ASEAN community, and Japan have been sharing Han- Chinese cultural ideology (Confucianism, Mahayana Buddhism etc.) and pre-modern history; therefore, a great number of common values could be found among the diverse differences. As a paddy-rice agricultural state of Southeast Asia, Vietnam has localized Confucianism and absorbed it into Southeast Asian culture. Therefore, Vietnamese Confucianism has been decentralized and horizontalized after being introduced and accepted. Beside the local uniqueness of Shintoism, Japan has shared Confucianism, the Indian-originated Mahayana Buddhism and other East Asian philosophies; therefore, both Confucian and Buddhist philosophies should be wisely laid as a common channel for cultural exchange between Japan and Vietnam. This semiotic research aims to investigate and generalize the symbol of dragons in Vietnam and Japan, looking at their Confucian and Buddhist absorption and separate impacts in each culture, from which the common and different values through the symbolic significances of the dragons are obviously generalized. The comparative study of Vietnamese and Japanese dragons can be enlarged as a study of East Asian dragons and the Southeast Asian legendary naga snake/dragon in a broader sense. The current and future political, economic and cultural exchanges between Japan and Vietnam could be sped up by applying a starting point at these commonalities.

  • CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION, the CULTURE of MANGA Christiana Constantopoulou Manga and Anime
French Journal For Media Research – n° 6/2016 – ISSN 2264-4733 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION, THE CULTURE OF MANGA Christiana Constantopoulou Professeure de Sociologie de la Communication Université Panteion, Athènes - Grèce Manga and Anime The popularity of anime and manga has helped westerners gain a broader understanding of Japanese culture. Manga is a generic term for all graphic novels and comic books originally published in Japan. Manga is read either in serialized comic books, monthly magazines, or graphic novels. All formats are available in English translation, graphic novels, however, are the most common and can be found in both major bookstore chains and local comic shops. The graphic novels are usually presented in "manga-style," meaning a right-to-left format. The word Manga, when translated directly, means “whimsical drawings”. Manga are typically 'comic books' as the West understands them; rather, they represent pieces of Japanese culture and history. The 'manga' style has an extensive history, beginning sometime in the 10th century; scrolls from that period depict animals as part of the 'upper class', behaving as a typical human would in similar situations. Such scrolls would go on to be known as the Chōjū giga or “The Animal Scrolls”. Scrolls found later on in the 12th century would depict images of religion such as the Gaki Zoshi (Hungry Ghost Scrolls) and the Jigoku zoshi (Hell Scrolls). While both dealt with various aspects of religion, unlike “The Animal Scrolls”, these provided a more instructive viewpoint, rather than a comedic style. Manga are more significant, culturally, than Western comic books (though many fill the same role).
