He heads to his office. David takes it all in; he looks to Julia’s office. CUT TO: 10:04:19 INT. HOME OFFICE. JULIA’S OFFICE. DAY Hunter-Dunn speaks gravely to Julia, in low voices, as he shows her a file. HUNTER-DUNN We’ve acquired intelligence on a possible terrorist attack on a London school. 8 JULIA (Low) Oh My God. HUNTER-DUNN The cell’s comms are encrypted but meta-data suggests a pattern of reconnoitring schools. He indicates a list of schools in the file, one of which is Heath Bank Primary School. JULIA Feed these through to the police when they arrive. Julia moves as if that’s the matter dealt with, but Hunter-Dunn doesn’t. HUNTER-DUNN Ordinarily I would, but one of the schools threw up a link to a serving police officer. His kids attend. David Budd. Julia looks at David. JULIA (Shocked. Beat.) It may be a coincidence... HUNTER-DUNN Yes, it may, or a terrorist cell’s obtained confidential information on the officer who foiled the 1st of October attack and this is their plan for revenge. Julia’s absorbs all the implications. HUNTER-DUNN (CONT’D) In my experience information leakage occurs for one of two reasons, either police officers fail to communicate securely, or an officer susceptible to bribery or blackmail is responsible for the disclosure. JULIA If there’s a police leak, we should keep this to ourselves. Hunter-Dunn reacts.

  • Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister
Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister Sarah E. Maier and Rachel M. Friars (University of New Brunswick, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada & Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) Abstract: Anne Lister (1791–1840) was a multihyphenate landowner-gentry-traveller-autodidact- queer-lesbian, a compulsive journal writer who lived through the late-Romantic and well into the Victorian ages. While her journals have proven to be an iconographic artefact for queer and lesbian history, our interest here is in the public adaptations of Lister’s intentionally private writings for twenty-first-century audiences as found in the film The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and the television series Gentleman Jack (2019–). Our discussion queries what it means to portray lived queer experience of the nineteenth century, how multimedia translate and transcribe Lister’s works onto screen, as well as how questions of legibility, visibility and ethics inevitably emerge in these processes. Keywords: adaptation, encryption, Gentleman Jack, journals, lesbianism, Anne Lister, queer history, queer visibility, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, transcription. ***** Lister ought to tell her own story before anyone interpreted it for her. Hers is, after all, the truly authentic voice of the nineteenth century woman caught up in a dilemma not of her own making. She ought to be allowed to tell it as it was, from her own point of view. (Whitbread 1992: xii) The recent appearance of a woman given the nickname ‘Gentleman Jack’ in a show focused on a queer woman depicts a subject who writes her life into encrypted journals.

  • Lord-Pearsons-Letter-Of-Complaint-To
COMPLAINT: COVERAGE BY “TODAY”, SINCE THE WILSON REPORT, OF THE CASE FOR THE UK TO WITHDRAW FROM THE EU. BACKGROUND The 2005 Wilson Report into the BBC’s coverage of EU affairs was the Corporation’s first published independent analysis of its output. Its committee of inquiry was chaired by Lord Wilson of Dinton, formerly Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service. This complaint is that the BBC has not delivered the improvements it promised in its response to that report, of its coverage of EU affairs. This applies particularly to the debate about the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The Wilson Report was published in January 2005. It was critical of parts of the relevant output. It said: …we do think there is a serious problem. Although the BBC wishes to be impartial in its news coverage of the EU it is not succeeding. Whatever the intention, nobody thinks the outcome is impartial. There is strong disagreement about the net balance but all parties show remarkable unity in identifying the elements of the problem. Sometimes being attacked from all sides is a sign that an organisation is getting it right. That is not so here. It is a sign that the BBC is getting it wrong, and our main conclusion is that urgent action is required to put this right. The problem can be summarised under a number of headings which we analyse below.1 Institutional mindset. Giving the audience the information it needs to make up its own mind is a proper and important role for the BBC and one which it must carry out.

Ashes to Ashes (DVD) Talent: Keeley Hawes, Philip Glenister, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster, Montserrat Lombard. Director: Johnny Campbell, Bille Eltringham Classification: M (Mature) Duration: 516 minutes (including 8 episodes) We rate it: Five stars. Date of review: 22nd October, 2009 Several years ago, audiences in both the UK and Australia were introduced to the wondrous BBC drama Life on Mars. Taking its name from a David Bowie song, Life on Mars followed the intriguing exploits of a 2006 Manchester cop, Sam Tyler, (played by the wonderful John Simm) who was hit by a car and seemingly sent back in time to 1973. The show functioned as a compelling psychological thriller, following Tyler’s efforts to discover what had sent him back in time (was he in a coma, dying, dreaming, or in some kind of limbo-land or Purgatory?) and his attempts to escape 1973 and get back to his life in 2006. At the same time, the show was a loving and at times hilarious re-creation of the 1970s British cop-show milieu (think of The Sweeney crossed with The Professionals, but shot with today’s filmmaking technology), and it featured the wonderful Philip Glenister as the now-iconic DCI Gene Hunt, a politically- incorrect, hilariously foul-mouthed and utterly lovable character who infuriated Tyler as often as he helped him in his various quests. Life on Mars was a critical and commercial hit, and it spawned a tremendously effective second series. The characters central to Life on Mars were both sympathetic and fascinating, the writing and direction of the episodes occasionally awe-inspiring, and the mystery at the heart of the entire show was brilliantly handled to the very end.

Trump added that he gave the British prime minister "my ideas how to negotiate" Brexit but "she didn't listen to that and that’s fine, she has to do what she has to do. I think it could have been negotiated in a different manner. I hate to see everything being ripped apart right now." [POLITICO, March 14, 2019] German defense spending is falling even shorter. The U.S. isn’t happy Germany, which had already announced that it will fall significantly short of NATO’s defense spending goals, annoying the United States, risks provoking Washington further by failing to reach even its own slimmeddown target.
