Online Program Tickets at: www.SINGTORONTO.com On behalf of our board of directors, organizing team, performers, and clinicians, thank you for attending the fifth annual SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival, Canada’s premier a cappella music festival., voted one of the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario by Festivals and Events Ontario in 2014 and 2015. We are again showcasing the best in vocal talent, all bringing their rich vocal traditions. They span a smorgasbord of influences and genres, including: pop, rock, jazz, choral, barbershop, world, gospel, folk, live looping, beat boxing, and improv comedy. SING! provides the perfect opportunity to sample something new: to be part of this exciting, spontaneous, evolving art form. Whether you’re already an a cappella fan, a musician who wants to learn more from experts, or simply a patron who enjoys good music, SING! is the place to be. With more than 30 concerts, inspiring workshops, and other events, we invite you to experience all that SING! offers. Along with our spectacular headliner artists, we are delighted to present an eclectic line-up of Signature events, including: Trip the Light Fantastic, a stunning interdisciplinary concert that pairs eclectic vocal groups with professional dancers, SING! Swings, where you'll hear billboard chart toppers of the past 40 years re-imagined as jazz standards, NFB SINGS!, where National Film Board shorts are underscored by a diverse collection of vocal artists, and our Global Voices day, where audience members can learn from, participate in, and enjoy music from all around the world. We're thrilled to present our Slaight Music Legacy Award on May 14 at the Nylons Farewell Toronto concert to The Nylons, an international icon and Canadian treasure, who ushered in a new era for Canadian a cappella and went on to wow audiences for 38 years. They are the fifth recipient of this prestigious award. We fondly remember Michael Burgess, our first honouree, who passed away last September. He was a brilliant tenor with a spellbinding voice that inspired generations of singers, and a warm-hearted humanitarian who gave endlessly of his time and lent his voice to countless charities. He was a great supporter of SING! and our artists. SING! is made possible by the generosity of our sponsors, partners, supporters, and our many volunteers. Whether you are here to take in some of our world-class performances, to expand your musical horizons in a workshop, or to sing with us, thank you for joining us as we discover that the voice knows no limits. • The Music Distribution Industry in Canada 2006
THE MUSIC DISTRIBUTION INDUSTRY IN CANADA 2006 BY LARRY LEBLANC FEB. 2006 This report has been prepared by Larry LeBlanc for the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB). The purpose of this document is to provide a profile of the English and French-language components of distribution of the Canadian-owned label and artist sector as well as Canadian artists signed or distributed by multinationals in Canada. The report specifically discusses changes in the music distribution sector in Canada since 1998. As well, such newly emerging factors as the rise of widespread Internet-based downloading; the rise of music subscription services; and the use of ringtones, ringtunes and podcasting in affecting music sales are also discussed. The report indicates that Canadian music retail has become more consolidated and more selective with product choices. Major music retailers carry a different product mix today than a decade ago. There are fewer music CDs, and more film-related DVD and computer game product. Although radio remains a critical vehicle for the Canadian record industry, labels and retailers cite a waning impact of the medium on overall sales. The study is based on a review of existing documentation, secondary research as well as analysis and findings drawn from 11 interviews conducted by Larry LeBlanc, as the principal source of primary research. Music OVERVIEW Canada's small market size, and a sizable support infrastructure is enabling the domestic industry to develop distinct acts for audiences home and abroad. In the past three years, global markets have embraced a new wave of formidable Canadian English-language rock acts including: Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Death From Above 1979, Feist, Stars, the Dears, Alexisonfire, Metric, Bedouin Soundclash, and Hot Hot Heat; as well as such French-language acts as Corneille, and Lynda Lemay.

  • Multiculturalism and the De-Politicization of Blackness in Canada: the Case of Flow 93.5 Fm
MULTICULTURALISM AND THE DE-POLITICIZATION OF BLACKNESS IN CANADA: THE CASE OF FLOW 93.5 FM by Kisrene McKenzie A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto © Copyright by Kisrene McKenzie 2009 MULTICULTURALISM AND THE DE-POLITICIZATION OF BLACKNESS IN CANADA: THE CASE OF FLOW 93.5 FM Master of Arts 2009 Kisrene McKenzie Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education University of Toronto Abstract This thesis presents a case study of Canada‟s first Black owned radio station, FLOW 93.5 FM, to demonstrate how official multiculturalism, in its formulation and implementation, negates Canada‟s history of slavery and racial inequality. As a response to diversity, multiculturalism shifts the focus away from racial inequality to cultural difference. Consequently, Black self-determination is unauthorized. By investigating FLOW‟s radio license applications, programming and advertisements, this thesis reveals just how the vision of a Black focus radio station dissolved in order to fit the practical and ideological framework of multiculturalism so that Blackness could be easily commodified. This thesis concludes that FLOW is not a Black radio station but instead is a multicultural radio station – one that specifically markets a de-politicized Blackness. As a result, multiculturalism poses serious consequences for imagining and engaging with Blackness as a politics that may address the needs of Black communities in Canada. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I extend my deepest gratitude to my thesis supervisor, Dr. Sherene Razack, for her guidance, constant support, encouragement and initial interest in my thesis topic.
