  • Global Tree Planting with Purpose and Power
Global Tree Planting with Purpose and Power Partnership Study: Social media influencers inspire large-scale action among a new generation of tree planters What started as a callout on the social media platform Reddit quickly turned into an environmental force, driven by a new audience of tree planters. #TeamTrees — a collective effort with YouTube creators to inspire support for tree planting around the globe — took social media by storm in the fall of 2019. The campaign was one of the fastest-growing environmental fundraising initiatives to date and the largest crowdfunding effort in YouTube’s history. A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY #TeamTrees began with YouTube influencers MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson, widely followed for his creative philanthropy) and Mark Rober (former NASA scientist) accepting a challenge to plant 20 million trees in honor of MrBeast’s 20 millionth subscriber. They chose to collaborate with the Arbor Day Foundation in managing the campaign to leverage three of its key strengths: ➊ Unique Position: The Foundation is uniquely equipped to handle a tree planting project of this scale and scope. ➋ Integrity: A commitment to planting the right tree in the right place for the right reasons. ➌ Credibility: A proven track record of working with a network of partners to deliver results. The goal was to raise $20 million by January 1, 2020. Each dollar raised would plant a tree, and trees would be planted on every continent except Antarctica. Hundreds of other content creators on YouTube and other social platforms were recruited to help lead the charge, and everyone involved developed unique content to drive their viewers to donate on TeamTrees.org in support of tree planting.

NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release The Young Turks Network Automates and Expands Online Media Processing and Distribution with Telestream Vantage Telestream solutions help automate high-volume editing, transcoding and distribution, uploading and publishing of content to social media outlets Nevada City, California, March 29, 2017 –Telestream®, a leading provider of digital media tools and workflow solutions, today announced that The Young Turks (TYT) is using Telestream's Vantage Media Processing Platform to automate high-volume editing, transcoding and distribution of its programming, as well as publishing content to social media outlets. Produced from its Los Angeles-based studio as a live, multi-camera HDTV show, TYT is the largest online news and politics show in the world. Started in 2002 as a Sirius satellite radio show, TYT migrated to YouTube in 2006. Now, with more than 25 channels in its network, TYT can be seen on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Hulu, Pluto.TV, Roku, and many more platforms. The flagship news show The Young Turks—co-hosted by The Young Turks Founder and CEO Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian—consistently ranks No. 1 among comScore rankings. As a pioneer of subscription-based membership, TYT Network currently provides special, exclusive content on TYTNetwork.com to its vast membership. “Our goal is to continue expanding the scope of our programming and distribution channels, as well as finding more effective ways to monetize it. To accomplish this, we needed to stop relying on a hodge- podge of generic automation software that posed multiple points of failure across our system. We switched to Vantage because it’s purpose-built to support the needs of a high throughput media processing operation like ours,” explains Jonny Greenwald, Post-production Technical Director for TYT Network.

  • A Comparative Analysis of CGI Instagram Influencer, @Lilmiquela
A comparative analysis of CGI Instagram influencer, @lilmiquela, and human Instagram influencer, @_emmachamberlain The careful balance between being “insta-famous” and being relatable: discussions on media representation and media production of influencers on Instagram Course: Master’s Thesis in Media and Communication Studies Program: Master of Arts: Media and Communication Studies - Culture, Collaborative Media and Creative Industries Malmö University Examiner: Alessandro Nani Supervisor: Krista Lepik Student: Deya Aliaga Kuhnle: [email protected] Date: September 29th, 2019 Word count: 17,000 words 1 Abstract In an increasingly digital world, the relatively under-researched realm of the social media influencer industry is slowly becoming more pertinent and revealing for academic research areas for media production and representation. In this paper, a comparative visual analysis was undertaken to compare human influencer, Emma Chamberlain, and computer-generated influencer, Lil Miquela through the examination of a total of 16 Instagram posts across the two influencers. These images were further dissected through the use of pre-defined cultural scripts, such as calibrated amateurism, personal branding, being ‘cool’ and selfies. The analysis of the cultural scripts and visuals revealed the two juxtaposed categories of behavior — a traditional celebrity culture of fame, wealth and exclusivity versus a down-to-earth, ‘just like you’ and amateur type of influencer. Both subjects vary their content to suit both categories as if balancing the two opposing versions of their digital personas; this characteristic appears to be distinct to both influencers. Further research could be carried out to examine the generalizability of this finding and to further understand the influence that this might have on media audiences.
