BOOST YOUR RESILIENCE

The long health crisis that we’re living through is putting our mental health to the test. Many of us are suffering from tiredness, anxiety, a drop in morale or motivation, or a feeling of isolation due to the prolonged restrictions on our lives.

This period is placing a major, daily burden on our adaptability skills and testing our resilience. We can define resilience as the capacity to recover and rebuild our lives by adopting a positive attitude in the face of adversity. Resilience implies positive adaptation and transformation: we don’t emerge from the situation the same as when we entered it.

We can develop resilience at any time in our lives. The CERN Medical Service psychologists recommend four techniques we can use to kick-start this process, starting now:

WORK ON YOUR SELF-EFFICACY AND DEVELOP YOUR FEELING OF GET TO KNOW YOURSELF BETTER GRATITUDE How do you normally react to stress? How can you regulate your You’ve undoubtedly already encountered and lived through emotions? What do you need? Those are some key questions. challenges. How did you overcome them? What resources can Once you’ve identified and understood your reactions, they’ll be you draw on and how? These are some important questions to easier to keep in check and deal with. ask yourself. It’s also important to stay upbeat and realistic. Instead of burying your head in the sand and ignoring the Every day, assess how you’re feeling (stressed, tired, emotional, obstacles, be confident that you can and will overcome them. etc.) on a scale of 1 to 10. This will allow you to better judge the Gratitude is also good because it makes us focus on what’s going state you’re in and take the necessary steps to feel better or ask well in our lives. Write down in a notebook, every day for five for help (e.g. through a consultation with a psychologist) if you days, without repeating the same thing: score more than 8 several times in a row. Although the usual tools we have to make ourselves feel better are restricted at the moment, we can use this opportunity to unleash our creativity: • something that made you happy that day, with a few what can you do to feel better with the means at your disposal words about why it made you happy; today? • something nice that someone did for you that day; • something nice that you did for someone else.

FOSTER COMMUNITY SPIRIT AND SOLIDARITY In this way, we learn to focus our attention on gratitude and What has improved? What do we want to keep from this self-efficacy, which will make us feel better. period and what benefits can it bring? It’s useful to ask yourself these questions because the crisis might also bring positive developments that it’s important to identify. SHOW COGNITIVE FLEXIBILITY AND BE PROACTIVE What’s in your control and what isn’t? What action can you take Together, we are stronger. This community spirit is important yourself? By asking yourself these questions, you avoid wasting in times of crisis. Keep an eye on your colleagues, teams, friends energy on things that you don’t have the immediate power to and family. Ask how they’re doing, and help them. change and instead focus on what you can do to cope.

Take a situation that’s worrying you, such as your health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Imagine three circles. The first circle contains the things that are entirely in your control (e.g. what you can do to protect and look after yourself – eat well, follow MENTAL HEALTH IS AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF OUR OVERALL HEALTH the protective measures, exercise, read, write, start a creative The CERN Medical Service has two psychologists – Katia Schenkel activity, and contact your doctor and the CERN COVID-19 and Sébastien Tubau – whom members of the personnel can helpline if you have symptoms). The second circle contains consult as a first port of call. These consultations include offering the things that you have some influence over but don’t depend advice, suggesting practical coping strategies or referring entirely on you (e.g. if other people fail to follow the protective patients to a suitable specialist, as required. measures, you can ask them to do so and thereby bring about a change in behaviour). The third circle contains the things https://hse.cern/content/psychologist that you can’t influence directly (e.g. government decisions to extend or lift the lockdown, restrictions, etc.). Sort the situations that are worrying you at the moment into these three circles. Focusing on your areas of influence will help you cope with uncertainty.
