Interacted directly with Vice Presidents for Research (10) and Institute/Center Directors (20) at other major universities (>15) in building energy-related partnerships. # Interacting with US DOE and other government agencies, US congressional offices, PA state agencies and international organizations for developing new strategic alliances and new multi-faculty research initiatives for enhancing Penn State’s energy R&D; facilitating the energy-related collaborative research in multiple colleges through PSIEE; strengthen the university energy research and education via strategic hiring of new faculty through PSIEE. # Enhancing Penn State’s global engagement networks (GEN) in research and education with international partners (in China, Saudi Arabia, Germany, India, Japan, Kazakhstan) in energy, environment, economics, and chemical engineering. Interacted with Presidents or Vice Presidents (15) at universities overseas in China, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, and UK. Major accomplishments Include: (1) Established leadership in creating national, regional and local energy R&D partnerships under the support of Penn State Vice President for Research, Deans of EMS College and COE, and Director of PSIEE: Initiated and led the multi-university proposal and established the University Coalition for Fossil Energy Research (UCFER) funded by US DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL, with $20 M DOE funds for 6 yrs during 2015-2021) as Founding Director and Principal Investigator. The UCFER founding members include MIT, Penn State, Princeton Univ, Texas A&M Univ, Univ of Kentucky, Univ of Southern California, Univ of Tulsa, Univ of Wyoming, and Virginia Tech, for which PSU is the lead institution. In 2017 UCFER accepted 7 new university members. (2) Led the Penn State effort with a major leadership role in developing the strategic alliance of Penn State energy research with US DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) that began in Oct 2010 as a part of the NETL-Regional University Alliance (RUA), which resulted in approximately $10 M funds for research at Penn State during 2010-2016. (3) Initiated and led the Penn State Alliance with Chevron starting with the White Paper for Chevron and working with Chevron CTO and R&D leaders, under the support of Penn State Vice President for Research and Dean of EMS, to develop Penn State-Chevron Alliance that successfully started in 2007 with $17 M commitment from Chevron for energy conversion research at Penn State. Song / CV - 3/9/2017 - 1 (4) Led the technical efforts for developing the Penn State-cosponsored ConocoPhillips (National) Energy Prize, for which ConocoPhillips committed $3.5 M for this annual national innovation award during 2008-2012 by working with the Dean of EMS College and ConocoPhillips; served as a Judge for this national prize in the 5-Person Judge Panel including the President of National Academy of Science. (5) Served on the university-wide Energy Task Force that recommended strategic hiring in energy, and then as Associate Director and Executive Council member for the newly formulated Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment that conducted a new strategic hiring of 24 new faculty members in energy research since 2008. (6) Initiated and led the strategic efforts to strengthen energy research infrastructure by working with the Dean of EMS College and the university’s central administration leading to the acquisition of a new building for the EMS Energy Institute in 2009, expanded the space and enhanced facilities. (7) Spearheaded the efforts to enhance the scientific impacts and international visibility of the EMS Energy Institute; the publications from the Institute in refereed journals rose from 26/yr in 2007 to 90/yr in 2016, and the worldwide science citations to EI publications in journals rose from ~700/yr in 2007 to ~3500 cites/yr in 2016 based on the science citation data from Web of Science in Feb 2017. (8) Established several new programs in the Energy Institute since 2007 including Nano-materials Program, Electro-chemical Technologies Program, Coal Science and Technology Program, Energy Economics Program, and Solar Ecology program, in addition to establishing and directing the Clean Fuels and Catalysis Program. (9) Created Research Achievement Award (for faculty and research faculty) and Student Research Achievement Award (for students) with referred publications and their scientific impacts as the main selection criteria; Established service awards for faculty, students and staff in the Institute; Established the Energy Institute Newsletter; Facilitated re-structuring and upgrading of institute website. 1998-Present Distinguished University Professor (since 2010), and Professor of Fuel Science (with tenure since 2003), Associate Professor of Fuel Science in tenure track (1998-2003), Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering, Professor of Chemical Engineering (since 2008), Department of Chemical Engineering, the Pennsylvania State University, University Park. # Teaching and advising students in Energy Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Fuel Science, Materials Science and Engineering, and Chemistry; # Initiating and directing original research in the Clean Fuels and Catalysis Program consisting of ~14 people/yr. (graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and research assistants, visiting scholars); Serving the university and the profession. Major accomplishments Include: (1) Established internationally recognized leadership in energy and fuels and catalysis research; proposed and developed novel design concepts for new processes and new materials including: (A) Proposed and developed a novel approach for CO2 capture based on solid “molecular basket” sorbents (MBS) which changed the way of thinking and had major impacts on R&D on CO2 capture worldwide and already demonstrated in a pilot plant in the US, with several other pilot plants in progress in the UK, Korea and China; developed novel MBS-type sorbents for H2S separation from bio- gas and NO2 and SO2 capture from industrial flue gases; published the Top Most Cited Papers worldwide and changed the way of thinking in this research area. (B) Invented a new process and new adsorbents for selective adsorption for removing sulfur (SARS) from liquid hydrocarbon fuels without using hydrogen which has been patented and licensed to industry and already applied to multiple proto-type systems; published the Top Most Cited Papers worldwide and changed the way of thinking in this research area. (C) Developed sulfur-tolerant and carbon-resistant catalysts for low-temperature steam reforming of hydrocarbons which has been patented and licensed to industry and already applied for fabricating proto-type systems for liquid fuels and bio-fuels; published Top Most Cited Papers worldwide in fuel processing for fuel cells including reforming and water gas shift reactions. (D) Invented new processes and catalysts for shape-selective synthesis of value-added polycyclic chemicals via alkylation and isomerization of 2-3 ring aromatics such as 2,6-dimethyl naphthalene, 4,4’-dimethyl biphenyl, trans-decahydronaphthalene, and sym-octahydroanthracene for advanced polymeric materials, some of which have been patented, licensed and demonstrated in pilot scale in industry. (E) Proposed and established tri-reforming process concept and developed effective multi- component catalysts for production of industrially useful synthesis gas with desired H2/CO ratios using C. Song / CV - 3/9/2017 - 2 CO2 and natural gas, which has been applied in R&D worldwide and scaled up in industry in South Korea and China. (F) Discovered novel bimetallic catalysts for oxygen-enhanced water gas shift (OWGS) for efficient H2 production which has been demonstrated in proto-type fuel

    Curriculum Vitae Cinzia Chiappe received Laurea (cum laude) and PhD degrees from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1985 and 1989, respectively. After a two years period at the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection, she moved to the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry (University of Pisa) as a researcher. Since 2002 she is Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Pisa. Her primary research interests focus on the ionic liquids (ILs) chemistry and their application. Using the tools of physico- organic chemistry her research group is dedicated to obtain information on ILs and their physico-chemical and biological properties, often correlating experimental results with theoretical calculations. In this field, she has developed several projects that using these “designer solvents” as novel media and catalysts have allowed to develop new and more sustainable chemical processes affording a lot of new compounds and materials. Goal of her research work is indeed to develop new classes of optimized ILs to apply as solvents and/or catalysts in real-world problems: in other words to provide more effective chemical reactions or to develop novel platforms for more efficient extractions, separations and, in general, energy-saving processes. LEE’S PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31st July 2003 Over the past year, several members of the Department were honoured in different ways, and we extend our warm congratulations to them all. We are delighted with the election of Professor John Brown to Fellowship of the Royal Society. Professor David Clary was elected to Honorary Membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as being elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition, he was elected to the Council of the Royal Society, and was awarded the Polanyi Medal of the Gas Kinetics Discussion Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Professor Richard Compton was nominated visiting Professor at the University of Săo Paulo in Brazil over the last summer. Professor Jacob Klein was awarded the Prize Lecture of the Colloid and Interface Division of the Japanese Chemical Society, while Professor Paul Madden was awarded the Statistical Mechanics and Simulation Industrial Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry sponsored by Unilever. Professor Richard Wayne was honoured by being chosen as the Hauptvortrag speaker at the 10th Fachbereichstag at the University of Wuppertal. Of our junior members, we note with pleasure that Jay Wadhawan, a 3rd year D.Phil. in Richard Compton’s group, was awarded a two-year Study Abroad Studentship by the Leverhulme Trust, while Susan Perkin, working in Jacob Klein’s group, was elected to a Jowett Senior Scholarship at Balliol.     Richard N. Zare Stanford University Adventures in Chemical Analysis One of the great challenges in chemistry is to penetrate the world of the ultra small, to view nearly infinitesimal spaces, and to recognize their importance. Indeed, the analysis and manipulation of volumes so tiny that they are almost beyond comprehension is a critical element of the emerging field of chemical nanosciences and nanotechnology. These capabilities unlock secrets of nature. These secrets underlie how cells function, how reactions occur, how energy and information is stored and transported, and how such structures can be tailored to be useful devices for mankind from sensors to motors to computers. I want to take this opportunity to present my own adventures in exploring how to analyze complex mixtures for their chemical constituents. I hope to touch on laser induced fluorescence, chemical separations in capillaries and microchips, and the use of optical techniques as well as mass spectrometry. Bio Richard N. Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science and Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Stanford University. He was born on November 19, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio, and is a graduate of Harvard University, where he received his B.A. degree in chemistry and physics in 1961 and his Ph.D. in chemical physics in 1964. In 1965 he became an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but moved to the University of Colorado in 1966, remaining there until 1969 while holding joint appointments in the departments of chemistry, and physics and astrophysics. In 1969 he was appointed to a full professorship in the chemistry department at Columbia University, becoming the Higgins Professor of Natural Science in 1975.
