WELLINGTON AFC Club History

Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s it gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making the Club one of the League’s longest continuously serving members.

The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in 1978/79 season and has played at Premier Division level from 1981/82 to 1984/85 and 2008/09 to 2010/11. The team were promoted as First Division Champions at the end of the 2016/17 season. In their first season back in the in Premier Division the team finished a creditable 15th, they also reached the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup losing 4-1 away to Southern League Paulton Rovers. Last season the team finished in 16th place but are hoping to improve on this in the forthcoming season. All other seasons were played at Division One level.

The Club’s Reserve side play in the Devon and Exeter League Division One. Having finished eighth for two seasons, unfortunately, the team struggled during the 2017/18 season and last season improved to once again finish in eighth place and will play at the same level this year.

Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons the A Team transferred to Division Three of the Taunton Saturday League last season where they finished a very creditable third and could be promoted to Division Two for the forthcoming season.

The Club’s Ladies side finished ninth in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division last season but, with the introduction of new players are hoping to improve this season. The team play a full role in both the playing and non-playing aspects of the club.

This season the Club will be running 21 teams in its Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and girls playing from the age of eight right through to eighteen. The Club also has three Disability teams. Six of the Youth Teams won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups last season and the Disability Teams won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year.

During the last year the Club launched its new website – www.wellingtonafc.co.uk and is making full use of its Facebook and Twitter accounts which have all proved very successful.

We continue to work with the local Council’s and Wellington Sports Federation on the Taunton Deane Pitch Strategy which will hopefully result in the Club moving to a larger ground and bring the majority of football pitches in the town to one site.

Outside of its core footballing activities the Club is home to several darts and skittles teams and it runs a full programme of social events for members and non-members alike. The Function Room and Lounge are available for hire. (Please contact the Clubhouse Manager – Jenny Oxby on 01823 665410 for details)

Man of the Match

Joe Chamberlain was named man- of-the-match for the game against Odd Down and received the award from supporter and former player Bob Trott.

MATCH REPORT WELLINGTON 5 0 ODD DOWN

Wellington bounced back from their heavy midweek cup defeat with a morale-boosting victory over Odd Down at the Playing Field. Manager Clive Jones was able to field his strongest line-up for several weeks, with the return of a number of key players, and the result was a much-improved all-round performance.

There wasn’t much to choose between the sides in an entertaining first half although Wellington went into the break in front thanks to a moment of pure quality after 14 minutes. Central defender Tom Hawkings pumped forward a free-kick into the opposition area and the ball was headed back for Joe Chamberlain to strike a stunning volley which gave keeper George Dorrington no chance whatsoever.

Odd Down, who won the reverse fixture 3-1 back in August, nearly equalised seven minutes later as defender Darius Davey hooked the ball against the home bar but the Wellington lead remained intact until the turnaround.

After the break, it was a different story as the hosts produced some scintillating attacking play to demolish the visitors with four more goals. They doubled their lead after 55 minutes when Jack Bryant played in Matt Dawson and the striker thumped home his second goal in successive games since joining the club. Keeper Tom Welch kept the score at 2-0 with an excellent double save before Wellington went further ahead on 65 minutes, Chamberlain sending over a perfect cross from the right for Tom Hawkings to rise and head home.

Three minutes later it was game over when some fine Wellington play ended with Dawson crossing for the irrepressible Chamberlain to smack home number four. Wellington still weren’t finished and, with three minutes remaining, Conor Bryant – who had an excellent game having dropped back into midfield – played in sub Ollie Holman to produce a cool finish.

It could have been six from the last attack of the game as Holman’s shot came back off the inside of the post before the final whistle blew.

TODAY’S VISITORS CADBURY HEATH

We extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Cadbury Heath for today’s Toolstation League Premier Division game.

The Club was first established in 1894 by Cadbury Heath Adult School when Cadbury Heath was just a little narrow, one-street village, outside the boundaries of . Their first pitch was situated at Mill Lane, changing in the Social Club and heating up water for tin baths. With a break for the War years, they progressed from the Bristol & District League to Division Two of the Bristol Premier Combination, and then to Division One in 1961. In the 60’s the team built their own baths at the Social Club. This period of success coincided with the renting of their present ground – Springfield – for £10 per annum from a local farmer and President Jim Warner. The offer to purchase for £250 was short-sighted declined, as the field was later sold as part of major development land and only intense lobbying led by the then Chairman, Mike Packer persuaded the Council to allocate Springfield as part of Public Open Space leased to the Football Club for dual use.

They won the Gloucestershire county League championship in three times and were runners up 74/75 at the same time winning the GFA Senior Amateur Cup three times. The success pushed the club into joining the Midland Combination after being turned down by the Western League due to ground conditions. A stand was built for the requirement of the Midland Combination. After finishing fifth and reaching the quarter finals of the FA Vase with a crowd of 2,000 at Springfield, for the tie against Billericay Town from Essex, the Manager left after a disagreement with the committee, and took most of the players, to Cinderford Town. This shook the club to the core, and they were relegated and had to drop two divisions to the Avon Premier Combination. A slow recovery took place, during which time the facilities at the ground were improved. Elected back into the Gloucestershire County League in 1984 a reserve team was started in 1988 the first team finished as runners-up in the County League in 1990.

They celebrated their Centenary by winning the League Championship for the fifth time in 1994, and continued to dominate the league once again. Improvements to the club facilities continued and a youth academy was started. After winning the Gloucestershire County League for a record sixth time, an application to join the Western League was again turned down due to the lack of a fence. After a public open meeting and a long battle with the Council, the fence was finally erected at a cost of £15,000 funded by Cadbury Heath Football Club. Steve and Lee’s first season in charge got runners up spot, of which consequently secured their election to the Toolstation Western League at long last! The club consolidated their position with Glen Smart as manager for four seasons. Further changes took place in the club management structure and after five years of planning tribulations floodlights were successfully installed at the end of season 2008/2009. At the end of the 2010/11 season they won the first division championship and promotion to the Premier Div. Season 2016-2017 saw the First team win the GFA Challenge Trophy beating Fairfield Town 4-3 0n penalties. For the 2017-2018 season Rob Mallett was appointed first team manager and they finished in 18th position in the League. Andy Black took over as manager for the 2018-19 season when the club finished in 14th place, he is joined on the management team this season by John Black

INVEST SOUTHWEST – TAUNTON SATURDAY LEAGUE SEWARD CUP – QUARTER FINAL NETHER STOWEY 1 5 WELLINGTON A

Our A team returned to Castle School in Taunton to face a Nether Stowey side, unbeaten and free scoring in division three, with a semi-final spot at stake. Conditions were not good and special mention must go to goalkeeper Sully Harlow whose handling was faultless throughout and again made a crucial save with the match goalless; risking bone and limb to dive at the feet of onrushing Stowey strikers to complete a double save after an initial smart stop. After a physical even beginning to the game, the deadlock was broken by Welly demonstrating their footballing class. Will Powell, making his first start of the season, beat two to win a free kick which was duly smashed past the keeper by the right foot of Tom Scarlett. Scarlett then turned provider, turning his marker inside out before pulling the ball perfectly across for Jordan Sellick to tap in with his right foot. Not satisfied with the difficulty of that finish, Sellick then found himself in the box again to arrow a left footed shot into the top corner. Suddenly, Stowey had gone from pre-iceberg to post-iceberg Titanic. Welly had a fourth before halftime when Rohan Poulsom left the defence wishing they’d stayed home, sprinting through to finish one on one. The break came at a good time for Stowey and Welly faced much tougher opposition in the second half. Although Welly extended their lead through Scarlett, Stowey grabbed a deserved consolation after a good spell of their own pressure. Welly could have grabbed a sixth but the returning Oli Ghazala needed three extra inches to reach a goalbound header, and Aaron Merry struck the post late on.

Wellington return to league action today with a home game against Wyvern Utd at the Rec.

FA Vase: Shepton Mallet will be sick of the sight of Tavistock and Jack Crago, after the Devonians knocked them out of a second FA competition. Having played a huge role in their FA Cup demise earlier this season, Crago struck three times inside the opening 23 minutes on Saturday afternoon to lead the Lambs to a 4-1 victory in the first round of the FA Vase. Tavistock will be joined in the second round by county rivals Exmouth Town, after first half goals from Callum Shipton and Karl Rickard led them to a 2-0 victory over Portland United. The third Devon side to progress were Buckland Athletic, who claimed a 2-1 win away at Camelford. Both of the Bucks goals came prior to half-time, with Dan Harrison heading them ahead, before Stuart Bowker doubled their tally from a tight angle in the 24th minute. Bridgwater’s trip across the channel proved worthwhile after they secured a 2-0 victory away at Newport on the Isle of Wight. Town made an excellent start to the game, going ahead after just five minutes when Jake Brown headed home a Harry Horton free- kick. The home side then had a man sent off at the end of the first half, and Bridgy took advantage soon after the interval when the reliable Jake Llewellyn fired home from the spot following a foul on Brown. The performance of the day may have belonged to Roman Glass St George who battled back from a 3-1 deficit during the second half to defeat Malmesbury Victoria 5-3. Having trailed at the interval, Roman Glass levelled things early in the second half before their hosts struck twice in quick succession to gain control of the tie. The visitors then came to life, scoring four times in the final half hour to progress to the second round, with Ryan Radford, George Box, Jack Trott and Matt Guy all finding the back of the net. Bradford Town defeated Lymington Town 1-0 thanks to a first-half strike from Matty Morris, while Westbury United were knocked out by Badshot Lea following a 1-0 loss at Meadow Lane. Warminster Town had an impressive win at home to East Cowes Victoria Athletic, with second half goals from Charlie Walton and James Vincent helping them to secure a 3-2 victory at Weymouth Street.

Premier Division: With other sides in Vase action, Wellington were one of the big movers in the Premier Division on Saturday, with the previous cellar dwellers beating Odd Down 5-0. Joe Chamberlain’s excellent volleyed finish gave the home side a half-time lead, with Matt Dawson doubling their advantage soon after the interval. Tom Hawkings put the result beyond doubt with a powerful header midway through the second half, with Chamberlain and then second-half sub Ollie Holman completing the victory. Hallen now sit fourth in the table after twice from behind to defeat Clevedon Town 4-2 at the Hand Stadium. In one of the games of the day, Zach Drew handed Clevedon a 21st minute lead, before Aron Robbins levelled things just before half-time with his first Hallen goal. Jay Murray finished with aplomb to restore Clevedon’s advantage early in the second half, but the away side managed to get level once again when Kyle Thomas fired home from the penalty spot following a handball in the area. Robbins second goal of the afternoon handed Hallen their first lead 20 minutes from time, with the away side wrapping up victory in the closing stages through substitute Ed Bamfo. Cadbury Heath ended a spell of seven matches without a win by beating Chipping Sodbury Town 2-1 at Springfield. Matt Huxley proved to be the difference between the sides, scoring either side of a Justin Bishop penalty to hand the Heath a much-needed three points. Another player to score two vital goals in his side’s victory was Brislington forward Neikell Plummer, who added the finishing touches to crosses from Reeko Best and Lewis Dunn during their 2-1 win at home to Bridport. The individual performance of the day however, belonged to George Kellow who scored all three of Cribbs’ goals during their 3-2 win away at Street. Having fallen behind early in the contest, Kellow struck twice to hand his side a 2-1 lead after just 13 minutes. Street then levelled midway through the first half, and with a 2-2 draw looking the likely outcome, Kellow popped up with a winner six minutes from time to complete a magnificent hat-trick.
