Azzam contends that Saladin was not just the brilliant military commander of popular imagination but that his true greatness lay in his political and spiritual vision. Famous for driving the crusaders out of Jerusalem and for his bitter war of attrition with Richard the Lionheart, and fabled for his chivalry and generosity, he became the most powerful man in the Islamic empire, but died penniless, without enough money to line his coffin. This book is apparently translated from original Arabic -- just to clarify, I read the English version published by Pearson Education Limited Saladin the Sultan is generally known as noble and chivalrous, because of this, he is remembered positively by both Christians and Muslims. Middle East countries adapted his "Eagle of Saladin" as insignia; in A 'prequel-ish' sort of biography of Shalahuddin al-Ayyubi, better known as Saladin, the Sultan who captured Jerusalem during Second Crusade. Unfortunately people tend to mythologize Saladin: that he was a great man out-of-nowhere carving history. Reality is a bit nuanced though. Well, in this book historian Abdul Rahman Azzam goes further. Saladin's success, he claims, wasn't simply matter of power-transfer: there was a massive geopolitical shift favorable to him. The result was profound. As Sunni identity grew, the Abbasid empire strengthened, ousting minority Shi'ite rulers here and there. Indeed, as Saladin rose to Saladin: The Triumph of the Sunni Revival, he got the almost perfectly unified Muslim world. Granted, he still had to face cliques, but the divide was no longer sectarian. Few years of struggle then ensued before Saladin forged alliance with princes not always kind to him. It was with this newfound unity Saladin worked his way to Jerusalem. Appealing to religious sensibilities, he then blared propaganda to 'liberate' it from Christian Franks Seen in this light, Saladin appears less as "Great Man of History". Yet it was altogether more inspiring depiction: a profoundly wily ruler navigating the wind of change. Also important in this biography is the working of Saladin's court. Like many great rulers, Saladin owed a great deal to his generals, Saladin: The Triumph of the Sunni Revival, , allies -- and this point is made clear. In the end a refreshing take on the famous man.
