One way to rekindle the spirit of wonder and sharing is to take in the sights of beautiful Christmas light displays. In Flagstaff, the Little America Hotel, 2515 E. Butler Avenue, puts on a gigantic display of 1 mil lion lights over 500 acres of property. According to Stacey Button, director of Sales at Little America Hotel, the decorating began about 15 years ago. The style at that time was just putting up lights around the exterior of the hotel. The current lighting of the lights was inspired by a visit by the general manager to Salt Lake City's Temple Square where lights were wrapped around trees and shrubs. • “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... • M. Night Sh Amalan S Lm Is Aimed at an Audience from Hom He Cringingl
    M. Night Shyamalan’s lm is aimed at an audience from whom he cringingly craves fealty. Published 10 months ago on January 17, 2019 By Keith Uhlich FEATURES / 6 days ago MUSIC / 7 days ago MUSIC / 7 days ago TV / 5 days ago VIDEO / 4 days ago Photo: Universal Pictures hat a difference nearly two decades makes. When writer-director M. Night Shyamalan released Unbreakable way back in 2000, the superhero genre was hardly W the mass-cultural malady that it is today. An oddball take on caped crusaders and the like had a better chance of standing out in theaters, and Unbreakable was certainly one of the more eccentric uses of $75 million Hollywood studio dollars. Shyamalan’s tale of a Philadelphia security guard, David Dunn (Bruce Willis), who, after surviving a devastating train crash, discovers he has inhuman strength and a psychic ability to predict danger, was photographed in languorous long takes, with most dialogue spoken barely above a whisper. Unbreakable was really more of a slow-burning family relationship drama— especially between Dunn and his hero-worshipping son, Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark)—than it was a men-in-tights, or, in this case, man-in-rain-slicker action flick. But a cartoonishly clothed Samuel L. Jackson did often pop up as a brittle-boned character named Elijah Price, who pontificated about comic books as if they were a socio-cultural Rosetta Stone. In one of his patented, P.T. Barnum-esque twist endings, Shyamalan revealed that Price fancied himself Dunn’s brainiac archnemesis. “They called me Mr.

In doing so it makes use of, and mobilises, the concept of estrangement or ‘making’ strange put forward by Victor Shklovsky and the Russian Formalists (amongst others). It does this at two levels: first, by examining the genres of speculative fiction as genres of estrangement that ‘make strange’ their representations of law, legality and justice; and second, by proposing a mode and methodology of cultural legal reading as one that itself ‘makes strange’, rendering the texts under analysis otherwise. As such, it sees in the stories told within the genres of speculative fiction not simply flights of fancy or postulates of pure imagination with no relation or reference to reality. Rather, they produce a meditation on and mediation of the world itself—one that opens us to see the world both in its createdness and contingency, as storied and imbued with meaning.

1. • A Critical Film Analysis of Representation of People with Disabilities in M
ABSTRACT A CRITICAL FILM ANALYSIS OF REPRESENTATION OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN FILMS The purpose of this study was to examine the entire directorial catalogue of the director M. Night Shyamalan and provide a content analysis incorporating anti-inclusion ideology and his themes, as well as perspectives involving people with disabilities. The films examined in this study were all written and directorial works by Shyamalan that had a national cinematic release. The researcher examined each of these films and used content analysis to examine the behaviors and actions of the characters as well as the overall narrative of each story. The films were examined using the different analytical themes of (a) anti-inclusion, (b) danger presented by a person with disabilities to others, and (c) danger presented by a person with disabilities toward society. The current study found that over half of Shyamalan’s films had characters with disabilities portrayed as dangerous to others or society. There also was a significant number, half of his films, that had an anti-inclusion theme. These themes can be observed in other films and throughout the horror genre, using the parameters in the study, in order to create more critical content analysis and foster meaningful conversations regarding representation of people with disability in film. Jacob Miller May 2019 A CRITICAL FILM ANALYSIS OF REPRESENTATION OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN M.
