2015 ~ 2016 Annual Report 2015 ~ 2016 Annual Report 2015-2016 st ignatius annual report web_18-press.indd 1 12/2/16 1:39 PM 2015 — 2016 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 — 2016 ANNUAL REPORT Letter from Fr. Michael P. Caruso, S.J., President Dear Friends, One of the beautiful prayers that we have in our Church is the Litany of Saints. There is a shortened version used at Baptisms [so as not to test the patience of the baby]; we use the full version at the Easter Vigil and at Ordinations. I think we all have enjoyed hearing our patron saint’s name invoked when this prayer has been prayed. The saints are our friends, companions, and intercessors in heaven. Thanks be to God, we have several saints in the making, here on earth, who partner with us at Saint Ignatius College Prep. Our Annual Report is a time to reflect upon the names of those who invest in this great educational project of Catholic education in the Jesuit tradition. If you are ever tempted to think “what good is my contribution doing?” I hope that the evidence provided in this report will show you that your generosity is making a difference in the lives of the young men and women that we are privileged to educate and form in the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Church. At our Mass of the Holy Spirit this year, I reminded the student body that every student at this school is privileged and blessed to be at this extraordinary school [made possible through your assistance]. I also told the faculty and staff that we too are privileged to work with such dynamic and talented students. Any time you attend an event at the school, you will see gifted and happy students working to be their best with their God-given talents. While we are not a perfect community, Jesus gave us the tools to change hearts and minds, and that is a distinct advantage we enjoy as a faith-based school. We are here to change hearts and minds with a moral compass. I thank you for believing in our mission with your prayers and financial assistance. I invite you to join me in a prayerful exercise with this Annual Report. Read the names of each person, family, foundation, and company in a spirit of gratitude. Commend them and their hopes and dreams to our God. May All the Saints intercede for and bless all you, for extending the love of Christ through Saint Ignatius College Prep. Fr. Michael P. Caruso, SJ 2 2015-2016 st ignatius annual report web_18-press.indd 2 12/2/16 1:39 PM 2015 — 2016 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 — 2016 ANNUAL REPORT Letter from Patrick C. Lynch, 2015-16 Board of Trustees Chairman Dear Saint Ignatius College Prep Community, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the passion and commitment that you and your fellow donors have shown to our school during the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2016. Each year we look forward to sharing our school’s successes and accomplishments with you. The achievements highlighted within this Annual Report are a confirmation of the support you bring to our school community. Without each of you, none of this would have been possible. There is truly no way to fully express what your support and investment mean to Saint Ignatius. As you look through the pages of our annual report, please know that the success of Saint Ignatius is ultimately a testament to you, our donors. We thank you for your continued generosity, and for choosing our school to help facilitate your philanthropy. You and your fellow donors make a real, and growing, difference in the lives of our students, faculty, and staff. I share with you the importance of supporting our students. I have four sons who are graduates of Saint Ignatius and another son who is a current student. Because of your generosity our students continue to benefit from abundant opportunities to learn, grow, and excel with the foundation of a Catholic Jesuit education. It is obvious that each of you understands the importance of supporting our students and sees the incredible value in developing students that are men and women for others. Thank you! Very truly yours, Patrick C. Lynch Chairman of the Board of Trustees 3 2015-2016 st ignatius annual report web_18-press.indd 3 12/2/16 1:39 PM 2015 — 2016 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 — 2016 ANNUAL REPORT Letter from John J. Chandler, Vice President of Development and Operations Pope Francis declared in 2016 the “Year of Mercy.” It brings to mind the corporal works of mercy that so many of us learned in our Catholic formation through the years. You, our benefactors, are partnering with us to ensure that the students of Saint Ignatius College Prep have the resources, the education and the faith formation to carry out this important work. We have never truly tallied the countless hours that our students donate assisting the marginalized, with their service outreach. Whether the need is as close as Pilsen, our adjoining neighborhood, or as far away as Guatemala, each student at Saint Ignatius undertakes joyful acts of compassionate outreach throughout the year. While some might think this is the result of a “service requirement,” we find that our students are genuinely committed to be guardians of the important role of a Jesuit student to be persons for others. They perform their work of mercy as individuals and frequently work with their teammates or clubs to create a greater impact. You would be proud to learn of their usually quiet and selfless outreach. Thank you for supporting this good work. The past year has seen a number of significant enhancements to the Saint Ignatius experience. Students have a new information technology center to work from and seek support. The Foglia Library has been air conditioned. An additional year of science has been added to the curriculum in order to give students better options for college. We have welcomed Fr. Lukas Laniauskas, SJ as the new Vice President for Mission Integration and Implementation ensuring that our Catholic and Jesuit charism remains strong, integrated and permeates all areas of the school. The Trustees have completed a new strategic planning process which will guide the direction of the school for the next five years. As I have expressed in the past, please stop in when you are in the neighborhood to see firsthand how your support is so critical to the many successes of our students. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family for all that you do for our students. A.M.D.G John J. • The Nightmare on 17Th Street
SEXUAL ABUSE OF MINORS BY CLERGY IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF PHILADELPHIA OR THE NIGHTMARE ON 17TH STREET Thomas P. Doyle, J.C.D., C.A.D.C. February 20, 2017 1 Introductory Remarks The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is one of the oldest ecclesiastical jurisdictions in the United States. It was erected as a diocese in 1808 and elevated to an archdiocese in 1875. It has long had the reputation of being one of the most staunchly “Catholic” and conservative dioceses in the country. The Archdiocese also has the very dubious distinction of having been investigated by not one but three grand juries in the first decade of the new millennium. The first investigation (Grand Jury 1, 2001-2002) was prompted by the District Attorney’s desire to find factual information about sexual abuse by Catholic clergy in the Archdiocese. The second grand jury (Grand Jury 2, 2003-2005) continued the investigation that the first could not finish before its term expired. The third grand jury investigation (Grand Jury 3, 2010-2011) was triggered by reports to the District Attorney that sexual abuse by priests was still being reported in spite of assurances by the Cardinal Archbishop (Rigali) after the second Grand Jury Report was published that all children in the Archdiocese were safe because there were no priest sexual abusers still in ministry. Most of what the three Grand Juries discovered about the attitude and practices of the archbishop and his collaborators could be found in nearly every archdiocese and diocese in the United States. Victims are encouraged to approach the Church’s victim assistance coordinators and assured of confidentiality and compassionate support yet their stories and other information are regularly shared with the Church’s attorneys in direct violation of the promise made by the Church.

January 13, 2021 ILLINOIS HEALTH AND HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION STATE ADVOCACY UPDATE TO: Chief Executive Officers, Member Hospitals and Health Systems Chief Financial Officers Government Relations Personnel In-House Counsel Public Relations Directors FROM: A.J. Wilhelmi, President & CEO Dave Gross, Senior Vice President, Government Relations SUBJECT: IHA Summary: General Assembly’s Lame Duck Session Late this morning, the outgoing 101st General Assembly adjourned its “lame duck” session, one of the more volatile and fast-moving legislative sessions in recent memory. In the midst of legislative business, majority House Democrats have also been focused the past several days on choosing a successor to long-time Speaker Michael Madigan. Earlier this afternoon, Representative Emanuel “Chris” Welch was elected the new Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives for the 102nd General Assembly. During the abbreviated five-and-a-half day session, IHA engaged in intense round-the-clock discussions and meetings with key legislators and legislative leaders and testified at numerous hearings on several critical issues of importance to the hospital community. Those include: hospital and healthcare transformation; the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ Healthcare Pillar legislation aimed at addressing inequities in healthcare and human services; and prejudgment interest payments in civil cases. The following is a summary of these issues and the legislative outcomes. In the coming days, we will be issuing IHA Member Updates and Analyses with more details. Hospital and Healthcare Transformation The General Assembly overwhelmingly passed IHA supported legislation to authorize the Hospital and Healthcare Transformation program (Senate Bill 1510), which passed the House 112-0 and the Senate 57-0.

TIME, MEMORY, NOSTALGIA THE NINTH INTERNATIONAL GRAPHIC NOVEL AND COMICS CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 27TH – FRIDAY 29TH JUNE 2018 BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY, UK Retro – a looking to the past – is everywhere in contemporary culture. Cultural critics like Jameson argue that retro and nostalgia are symptoms of postmodernism – that we can pick and choose various items and cultural phenomena from different eras and place them together in a pastiche that means little and decontextualizes their historicity. However, as Bergson argues in Memory and Matter, the senses evoke memories, and popular culture artefacts like comics can bring the past to life in many ways. The smell and feel of old paper can trigger memories just as easily as revisiting an old haunt or hearing a piece of music from one’s youth. As fans and academics we often look to the past to tell us about the present. We may argue about the supposed ‘golden age’ of comics. Our collecting habits may even define our lifestyles and who we are. But nostalgia has its dark side and some regard this continuous looking to the past as a negative emotion in which we aim to restore a lost adolescence. In Mediated Nostalgia, Ryan Lizardi argues that the contemporary media fosters narcissistic nostalgia ‘to develop individualized pasts that are defined by idealized versions of beloved lost media texts’ (2). This argument suggests that fans are media dupes lost in a reverie of nostalgic melancholia; but is belied by the diverse responses of fandom to media texts. Moreover, ‘retro’ can be taken to imply an ironic appropriation.

Yocum This dissertation considers a spectrum of five distinct approaches that mid-twentieth century neo-Thomist Catholic thinkers utilized when engaging with the tradition of modern scientific psychology: a critical approach, a reformulation approach, a synthetic approach, a particular [Jungian] approach, and a personalist approach. This work argues that mid-twentieth century neo-Thomists were essentially united in their concerns about the metaphysical principles of many modern psychologists as well as in their worries that these same modern psychologists had a tendency to overlook the transcendent dimension of human existence. This work shows that the first four neo-Thomist thinkers failed to bring the traditions of neo-Thomism and modern psychology together to the extent that they suggested purely theoretical ways of reconciling them.
