This teacher's guide is provided to familiarize you with an activity kit Astronomy, which is available to trained teachers through your local planetarium, museum, or other science resource center. Overview This kit has been carefully constructed to assist teachers who may have little or no astronomical experience to teach the exciting concepts of astronomy in their classes, but the activities and materials are equally appropriate for teachers who already feel comfortable teaching these ideas. The materials and activities in this kit will help make the study of the stars and planets a stimulating and rewarding learning opportunity for your students and should increase your confidence about teaching astronomy regardless of your past experience. Please read the information for teachers, as it will explain not only the procedures to follow for the activities, but the concepts they are designed to teach as well.     Perseids meteor showers are looking good Have you ever seen a spectacular meteor shower. Sometimes they are phenomenal but often, even though you know when and where to look, the display turns out to be so-so. But when you’ve seen a great shower, you’ll want to try to see another. 1. What do you think that you'll need to know ahead of time? The meteor shower that could be great this year should be visible in August. It is called the Perseids meteor showers since the meteors seem to radiate from the constellation, Perseus. We see meteor showers when the orbit of the Earth around the Sun travels through the debris trail of a comet. The Earth’s orbit passes through the comet Swift-Tuttle’s debris trail to create the Perseids meteor shower from July 17th to August 24th. The peak viewing evenings for this shower (when Earth passes through the densest part Swift-Tuttle's debris) are expected to be the evening of August 11th/morning of August 12th and August 12th/13th. 2. What do you think that you have to consider when choosing the time to lie outside on a blanket and watch the sky for meteors? I found this calendar of the summer dates and moon phases for August of this year. 3.
