Page 1 The San Diego Union-Tribune October 1, 1995 Sunday SST Defies Industry, Defines New Music By Daniel de Vise KNIGHT-RIDDER NEWSPAPERS DATELINE: LOS ALAMITOS, CALIF. Ten years ago, when SST Records spun at the creative center of rock music, founder Greg Ginn was living with six other people in a one-room rehearsal studio. SST music was whipping like a sonic cyclone through every college campus in the country. SST bands criss-crossed the nation, luring young people away from arenas and corporate rock like no other force since the dawn of punk. But Greg Ginn had no shower and no car. He lived on a few thousand dollars a year, and relied on public transportation. "The reality is not only different, it's extremely, shockingly different than what people imagine," Ginn said. "We basically had one place where we rehearsed and lived and worked." SST, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Los Alamitos, is the quintessential in- dependent record label. For 17 years it has existed squarely outside the corporate rock industry, releasing music and spoken-word performances by artists who are not much interested in making money. When an SST band grows restless for earnings or for broader success, it simply leaves the label. Founded in 1978 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., SST Records has arguably produced more great rock bands than any other label of its era. Black Flag, fast, loud and socially aware, was probably the world's first hardcore punk band. Sonic Youth, a blend of white noise and pop, is a contender for best alternative-rock band ever. -

Something’s happened to me over the last five years. I listen to, and trust, pop music far less than I did in my twenties, and the pop that I still listen to is radically different than what I grew up with. My ears cock, like a cat’s, more toward jazz, avant-garde, and instrumental hip-hop now than to the rock, rap, R&B, and beat-driven fare that sustained me for twenty years. To be fair, jazz was always there, ever since I bought a $20 CD of Miles Davis’s Capitol/Blue Note years in a cold January morning in 1994. I bought it from Sound Warehouse, a chain that’s long gone, because the cover was cool and Davis—with his close-cropped hair and natty suit—looked cooler than I could ever hope for. It was a sophistication to aspire toward, and to try and impress girls with. -

Unrated. As he traded songs with drummer Grant Hart in the 1980s punk band Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould's anguished vocals and the melodic buzz saw of his guitar playing would prove a key influence on the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. He added to his status as a role model by coming out as gay, a non-punk thing to do. Mould's anxiety-ridden persona continues to be evident in his post-Hüskers band Sugar and in work under his own name, most recently the '05 CD "Body of Song." Offstage, though, he's become more open and "comfortable in his own skin," as a band member offers in the extras to "Circle of Friends," which captures a career-spanning performance at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., Mould's adopted hometown. Not only has Mould made himself accessible through a much-linked blog -- the Boblog modulate.blogspot.com -- but he's also introducing his new DVD with club appearances, such as the one Friday at Chop Suey, that consist of a half- hour solo acoustic set, a Q&A session and a screening of "Circle of Friends." The DVD features inspired versions of Hüsker Dü classics "I Apologize" and "Makes No Sense at All," as well as "Circles," which finds the Hüsker/Pearl Jam connection coming, well, full circle. -

Washington, D.C. -- The District of Columbia Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment (OCTFME) is pleased to recognize Trixie Film co-founders Christoph Green and Brendan Canty as the June 2018 Filmmakers of the Month. Christoph Green graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Painting and began working as a designer specializing in broadcast design. He started an independent design company, Tangerine Studios, an award-winning shop, which over the years boasted clients such as The National Gallery of Art, The Discovery Channel, The Glover Park Group, PBS, PBS Kids, The Virginia Department of Health, AOL Devices, The Obama-Biden Campaign, and TLC. Brendan Canty is most well known as the drummer for the legendary DC-based band puck rock band, Fugazi. In addition to his longtime association with Fugazi, Canty also worked with several other bands during his celebrated career as a musician, including Rites of Spring, Deadline, One Last Wish, Happy Go Licky, Bob Mould, and Deathfix. Canty currently if a member of the band Super! Silver! Haze!, and the instrumental trio, The Messthetics. In addition to his work as a musician, Canty has also and produced records for Ted Leo, The Thermals, the Make Up, and others. Canty has composed music for dozens of hours of television and film and has performed the live score to films with the great filmmakers Sam Green and Brent Green.
