Ten years ago, when SST Records spun at the creative center of rock music, founder Greg Ginn was living with six other people in a one-room rehearsal studio. SST music was whipping like a sonic cyclone through every college campus in the country. SST bands criss-crossed the nation, luring young people away from arenas and corporate rock like no other force since the dawn of punk. But Greg Ginn had no shower and no car. He lived on a few thousand dollars a year, and relied on public transportation. "The reality is not only different, it's extremely, shockingly different than what people imagine," Ginn said. "We basically had one place where we rehearsed and lived and worked." SST, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Los Alamitos, is the quintessential in- dependent record label. For 17 years it has existed squarely outside the corporate rock industry, releasing music and spoken-word performances by artists who are not much interested in making money. When an SST band grows restless for earnings or for broader success, it simply leaves the label. Founded in 1978 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., SST Records has arguably produced more great rock bands than any other label of its era. Black Flag, fast, loud and socially aware, was probably the world's first hardcore punk band. Sonic Youth, a blend of white noise and pop, is a contender for best alternative-rock band ever.

Dir. Kenneth Branagh. Perf. Kenneth Branagh, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp. Fox, 2017. In the first scene of Kenneth Branagh’s big-screen adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express (1934)—one of Agatha Christie’s three most popular novels, according to a 2015 poll (Flood)—famous Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot plagues the staff members of a Jerusalem hotel with his unusual request for two eggs of identical size. He goes so far as to apply a ruler to his breakfast, only to conclude that it does not meet his requirements. The scene serves as a neat summary of the character that will likely sit well with hardcore Christie admirers—the author famously had Captain Hastings characterize Poirot as a man so meticulous that ‘a speck of dust would have caused him more pain than a bullet wound’ (1920/2007: 14)—and the shot of Branagh (the film’s star as well as its director) cowering behind his breakfast table and scrutinizing the eggs sets up Murder on the Orient Express as an adaptation that literally goes ab ovo. It invokes the initial description of the character in Christie’s debut novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (‘His head was exactly the shape of an egg’, 1920/2007: 14), and at the same time it is indicative of how the film reboots Christie for the twenty-first century, playing up Poirot’s tics while also humanizing him, an adaptive policy that has worked wonders for Sherlock Holmes.

    MS41 Branagh Collection About the collection: Background: The Sir Kenneth Branagh Archive originated in a substantial bequest to Queen's University from Sir Kenneth Branagh in 2000. The original bequests have been supplemented by donations from other sources, including commercial bodies (such as Naxos), charitable organisations (such as the Ulster Association of Youth Drama) and individuals (such as Mark Thornton Burnett, Sarah Hatchuel and Jude Tessel). Overview: The Archive consists of material relating to the professional life and work of Sir Kenneth Branagh. It is largely made up of paper documents (many are photocopies), but also holds recordings and merchandise related to individual productions. Original items (i.e. not photocopies) are marked as such in the listing. The Branagh Archive is an open collection, so periodically items will be added – from 2006 onwards the date items were added is noted. Arrangement: The material is arranged in 7 main headings: Theatre, Television, Film, Radio/Audio, General, Recordings and Oversized Material. Where material relating to a production allows, it is arranged by the type of material: Production Material, Publicity Material, Press/Reviews/Criticism, Publications and Merchandise. The General heading lists material which does not relate to any specific production (i.e. profiles and general biographical material). It also includes material relating to organisations with which Sir Kenneth Branagh is associated (Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the Ulster Youth Theatre). The Recordings heading lists official releases of films, television work and radio, but also unofficial copies. In addition, it also contains recordings of television and radio interviews with Sir Kenneth Branagh.
