THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

May is National Older Americans Month and the theme this year is never too old to play ; encouraging older Americans to stay engaged, active and involved in their own lives and in their communities. The joy in this time in our lives is that we actually have time for play as long as we haven’t forgotten how.

OLLI members in particular are engaged, active and involved. We take intellectual stimulation very seri- ously and yet, we will have, and have had, many classes designed for laughter and play. Consider AH 106 – Comedy in Opera and Shakespeare on May 2 nd and 7 th . The recent Newport Back Bay bike ride was great fun, too.

Please join us on Friday May 4 th for our Annual Meeting which will kick off Older Americans Month. In the spirit of play we’ll start with the ever popular ice cream social at 1p.m. at the Duck Club at the San Joaquin Marsh. This will be followed with a short business meeting and an informal thank you – celebration for all of our volunteers. Parking is limited so plan to carpool or… ride your bike!

Happy spring, Pam McGovern, OLLI President

May is Older Americans Month: 2012 - Never Too Old to Play

When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthdays. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. In April of 1963, President John F. Kennedy's meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens served as a prelude to designating May as "Senior Citizens Month." Thanks to President Jimmy Carter's 1980 designation, what was once called Senior Citizens Month, is now called "Older Americans Month," and has become a tradition. Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and cur- rent older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country.

A Few of the Past Older Americans Month Themes :

• 1978 - Older Americans and the Family • 1986 - Plan on Living the Rest of Your Life • 1992 - Community Action Begins with You: Help Older Americans Help Themselves • 1995 - Aging: Generations of Experience • 1997 - Caregiving: Compassion in Action • 1998 - Living Longer, Growing Stronger in America • 2000 - In the New Century. . . . The Future is Aging • 2003 - What We Do Makes A Difference. • 2011 - Older Americans: Connecting the Community • 2012 - Never Too Old to Play Volume 14 Issue 5 Page 3
