The pages that follow outline the structure of Introduction to Marine Science eNS 225 at Boston Univer­ sity) ~nd ~bstract the research and project work which constitutes its frRmework. Our objective, in addition, is to provide the studints 7ith pn overview of what has been accomplished and the staff ~ith p last opportunity to summarize observations or me~surements whose significance requires reemphasis. The scientific merit and sophistication of the student .. reports ~varies eppreciably; in part this reflects the v!?ri:?ble scientific content of their academic backgrounds. I find it interesting, however, that there are striking '\ exceptions to this correlation. In preparing this report at sea we are imparting to it limit?tions that time, library facilities and reflection could mitigate. On the other hand the students will soon disseminpte ~cross the VIestern Hemisphere and there will be no other opportunity. Arthur G. The course included 30 lec­ tures, 150 contact hours of supervised field and laboratory work, and an individual project for each student. The emphasis of the program reflects opportunities inherent to the ship's track and special skills of the staff, but subject matter treated on W-36 was broad and encom­ passed biologiqal, chemical, physical and geological aspects of ocean­ ography. On leg 1, after very heavy weather which eliminated planned work on Gulf Stream eddies, five students collaborated on studies of the Sargassum community and constructed a trophic model. On this leg primary productivity, nutrient limitation, diversity and abunaance of pnytoplankton were studied. Twelve neuston samples were analysed for their content of tar balls, Sargassum weed, pelagic siphonophores and the marine insect, Halobates. Prior to our first port, Antigua, bathymetric and oceanographic observations were made at the charted position of Echo Bank, an open ocean "shoaltl of questionable exist­ ence that we, also, did not find. On legs 2 and 4 hydrographic stations were occupied in the Grenada Basin. Profiles of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and phosphorus were used to identify water masses and zones of biolog­ ical activity. At these stations students identified mesopelagic fishes from depths ranging to 1000 meters. Drogues were deployed to examine surface current shear; and sediments were taken by gravity corer for analysis ashore. Students prepared species rosters of corals and fishes on leg 3 during three days at the Tobago Cays and immunological studies were conducted on species of sea urchins from the reef. Other projects here dealt with biological zonation and with the geology of a rampart island. Throughout the cruise logs were kept on sightings of marine mammals, birds, squids, turtles ~ on atmospheric transparency and certain meteorological events. The students continued long term SEA projects involving daily transmiss-ioRs of weather observations, long- 1ining'and shark tagging and ichthyop1ankton sampling. Further pro­ gress was made in developing methods to measure surface tension on uncontaminated seawater samples. At port stops special opportunities were taken to study evidence of displacements of sea level and to examine plankton of tropical embaymen t s • The student project reports, abstracted below, were prepared at sea and submitted prior to our arrival in Puerto Rico, the terminal port for W-36. The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. MAcBAIN (SPIRES) Institute of Marine Science, University of Miami ABSTRACT With acoustic-video techniques of observation, eight marine animal sounds were identified and an additional four were tentatively identified. These included sounds from longspine squirrelfish, queen triggerfish, bi- color damselfish, grouper, ocean surgeon, slippery dicks, jacks, cowfish, and drums. The sounds ranged from single pulses having duration times of fractions of a second and train durations of up to several seconds. cycles per second (cps) to trains of pulses having pulse repetition rates of fractions of a second and train durations of up to several seconds. Sound production was associated with feeding, locomotory, and agonistic behavior. The results of playback of these and other sounds were evidence of habituation by two species of snapper, and avoidance reactions. Some information obtained suggests interspecies communication by sound. Choruses of marine animal sounds contributed significantly to the am- bient noise level in the frequency range above 200 cps in the area of study. The studies suggested more effective instrumentation and methods of observation. INTRODUCTION The abundance of underwater biological sounds and the clarity of the water off Bimini, Bahamas, have attracted several workers in the field of marine bio-acoustics (Fish, 1954; Moulton, 1958; Fish & Mowbray, 1959; Kumpf & Loewenstein, 1962; Steinberg et al., 1962; Cummings, 1963, 1964; Cummings et al., 1964; Kumpf, 1964). Biologists, physicists, and engineers at the Institute of Marine Science, University of Miami, have been engaged in a four-year study of underwater sound with the Acoustic- video System located on Bimini.

Mouth small, terminal, jaws provided with bands of brush-like teeth, outer row larger and slightly compressed but pointed at tip. Vomer and palatines toothless. Preopercular margin finely serrate; opercle ends in blunt point. Dorsal fin with 9 spines and 21 to 23 soft rays. Spinous portion of dorsal fin low in adults, distinct from soft-rayed portion; anterior portion of soft dorsal and anal fins prolonged.Juve- niles with third dorsal fin spine prolonged, becoming proportionately smaller with age. Anal fin with 3 spines and 18 or 19 rays. Pectoral fins short, about 1.6 in head, with 17 or 18 soft rays. Caudal fin emarginate. Pelvic fins long, extending to origin of anal fin in adults, beyond that in young. Lateral-line scales 45 to 50. Head and fins scaled. Colour: silvery grey with blackish bars (bars may fade in large individuals) as follows: Eye bar extends from nape through eye to chest; first body bar starts at predorsal area, crosses body behind pectoral fin insertion, and ends on abdomen; second body bar incomplete, extending from anterior dorsal-fin spines vertically toward abdomen but ending just below level of pectoral-fin base;third body bar extends from anterior rays of dorsal fin across body to anterior rays of anal fin;last body bar runs from the middle soft dorsal fin rays to middle soft anal-fin rays; last bar crosses caudal peduncle at caudal-fin base.

Freeman1 1Center for Conservation Medicine and Ecosystem Health, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, St. Kitts, West Indies 2Department of Sciences and Technology, University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France ABSTRACT: Acanthurus spp. of St. Kitts and other Caribbean islands, including ocean surgeon- fish A. bahianus, doctorfish A. chirurgus, and blue tang A. coeruleus, frequently show multifocal cutaneous pigmentation. Initial reports from the Leeward Antilles raised suspicion of a parasitic etiology. The aim of this study was to quantify the prevalence of the disease in St. Kitts’ Acanthuri- dae and describe its pathology and etiology. Visual surveys demonstrated consistently high adjusted mean prevalence at 3 shallow reefs in St. Kitts in 2017 (38.9%, 95% CI: 33.8−43.9) and 2018 (51.5%; 95% CI: 46.2−56.9). There were no differences in prevalence across species or reefs, but juvenile fish were less commonly affected than adults. A total of 29 dermatopathy-affected acanthurids were sampled by spearfishing for comprehensive postmortem examination. Digenean metacercariae were dissected from <1 mm cysts within pigmented lesions. Using partial 28S rDNA sequence data they were classified as Family Heterophyidae, members of which are com- monly implicated in black spot disease of other fishes. Morphological features of the parasite were most typical of Scaphanocephalus spp.
