Clan CARRUTHERS ARMS Gules, two chevrons engrailed between three fleurs de lis Or CREST A seraphim volant Proper MOTTO Promptus et fidelis (Ready and faithful) The name arises in Dumfriesshire and appears to allude to an ancient British fort called Caer Rydderch or Rhythyr. Glack asserts that this means ‘for of Rydderch’, which appears to be a form of personal name. The family rose in the thirteenth century to be stewards of Annandale under the Bruce’s. Black narrates the career of Nigel de Karruthers, a cleric who was Rector of Ruthwell in 1380, rose to become Canon of Glasgow Cathedral in 1351, and was named as chancellor to Robert, Steward of Scotland, in 1344. The family around the same time acquired the lands of Musfald (now Mouswald). The Carruthers were included in the roll of unruly clans in the West Marches in 1587. In 1563 John Carruthers of Howmains was indicted, along with Edward Irvine of Bonshaw and several others, for an assault on Kirkpatrick of Closeburn and slaying several other sundry persons. The Mouswald line ended in Simon Carruthers who was killed in a border raid in 1548, and the lands passed to the Douglass’s of Dumlanrig by marriage to the Mouswald Carruthers heiress. The family of Howmains continued to prosper and their lands were erected into a free barony in 1542. The estate of Howmains was lost when financial disaster overwhelmed the family in 1772, but a younger son of the last laird had acquired the estate of Dormont in Dumbriesshier which the family holds to the present day. Lieutenant Colonel Francis Carruthers served in Egypt and in the Boer War, and was assistant director at the War Office from 1915 to 1919. He was a brigadier in the Royal Company of Archers (the monarch’s bodyguard in Scotland) and Lord Lieutenant of Dumfries. CLAYMORE Service, Education, Advocacy for the Scottish-American Ancestral Diaspora July 2020 COSCA 2020 AGM RESCHEDULED! Due to the COVID19 Pandemic, the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games—the regular site for COSCA’s Annual General Meeting since our founding in 1976—was cancelled for 2020. As a result, COSCA’s AGM has had to be rescheduled. Due to continued closures and cancellations of large public gatherings, the decision has been made to hold this year’s AGM online, as is allowed by applicable state law. Accordingly, COSCA will convene its AGM remotely, via Zoom. We are looking at several possible dates later in this Calendar Year. The new date and time for the AGM, as well as directions how to join the meeting, will be announced soon on the COSCA website (www.cosca.scot). Please consult the website for further details. But there's light and hope that we're now getting through these challenges. Plus there's always something new to learn. Such is the case with the rationale for early schedule changes for some games and festivals. It was not that they knew for sure that restrictions would still be in place but that the months of group and individ‐ ual preparation was not possible for key activities.

Carolyn and I had the honor representing the MacAlpines as the assembled Clans marched in at the opening of the Tattoo in Sydney for “a splash of Tartan”. The Chiefs of Buchanen, Davidson, Brouen/Brown and myself were called to the center of the red carpet and participated in offering a toast to His Excellency, General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd); Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and his wife, Her Excellency Linda Hurley, and to join them for after event cocktails. This was the second time that the Clans have been invited to participate, 27 clans were invited at the Tattoo in Edinburgh in 2018. We were invited to participate this year and it was truly an honor. We also were invited to attend a special Caelidh hosted by the Scottish Australian Heritage Council (of which the Society are members). We also had the opportunity to enjoy meeting with branches of the MacAlpines in Australia and New Zealand, including members of McAlpines North Canterbury Pipe Band .
