CONCLUSION 2 ABSTRACT Since the United States began its embargo of Cuba, Cuban-born men have defected from their homeland to pursue their dreams of freedom and playing Major League Baseball. Attempts at defection from Cuba pose significant risks to these players, ranging from death during the treacherous 90-mile journey from Cuba to the Florida coast, to their capture in route and repatriation back to Cuba to face harsh punishment from the Cuban Communist government. This paper examines the history of Major League Baseball’s impact on the United States-Cuba relations pre-embargo compared to the restrictions the embargo placed on Cuba after enactment and the effect the embargo had on Cuban men competing in the Major Leagues. It will examine how the Major League draft differs from the free agency system and the incentive free agency provides to Cuban men to defect. -

America's Past-time and the Art of Diplomacy ALYSON ST. PIERRE* ABSTRACT As organizations and corporations construct an international reach, they become influential actors in foreign relations between sovereign countries. Particularly, while Major League Baseball continues to recruit players and build a large fan base across the globe, it increases its ability to facilitate civil relations between the United States and other nations. An exploration of how professional baseballprovides a useful platform to improve diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba best exemplifies how the League can promote change. Although the United States and Cuba have had a rather tumultuous relationship in recent history, a coordinatedeffort to improve the treatment of Cuban baseball players through changes in League rules and federal laws has the ability to spark a unified commitment to improved diplomacy. -

However as relations between the countries deteriorated, so did the link baseball provided between the two countries. As Cuba’s economic and social policies became more restrictive, the best baseball players were scared away from the island nation to the allure of professional baseball in the United States, taking some dangerous and extremely complicated routes * Juris Doctor Candidate, 2017, University of Mississippi -

MLB Free Agency: Shortstop Market
MLB Free Agency: Shortstop Market Author : Robert D. Cobb Welcome to the fifth installment of INSC's MLB Free Agency Positional Breakdown! To start things off we will be taking a closer look at this year's crop of free agent shortstops. We will be taking a look at the list of names, what they bring to the table, where they could end up and which teams could be looking for shortstop help. So in order for us to get into any sort of analysis, we are going to need a list of upcoming free agents. It just so happens that mlbtraderumors.com formulates such a list every season. If you would like to access their full list of upcoming free agents, you can take a look right here. From that full list, here are the shortstops who are poised to be free agents at the conclusion of this season's World Series! Erick Aybar (33) Alcides Escobar (30) – $6.5MM club option with a $500K buyout Alexei Ramirez (35) — $4MM mutual option with a $1MM buyout Eric Sogard (31) Well that list is, well, short. Just like the second and third base markets, the shortstop market leaves much to be desired. This free agent market as a whole leaves a lot to be desired, but the infield especially. Only four guys are on this list, and one of them is not even likely to see the open market. Since there are only four names, let's just run down each one in the order they are listed. [embedit snippet="kenny-ads"] Erick Aybar is a below average player, who is getting close to his mid-30's. -
