MLB Free Agency: Shortstop Market MLB Free Agency: Shortstop Market Author : Robert D. Cobb Welcome to the fifth installment of INSC's MLB Free Agency Positional Breakdown! To start things off we will be taking a closer look at this year's crop of free agent shortstops. We will be taking a look at the list of names, what they bring to the table, where they could end up and which teams could be looking for shortstop help. So in order for us to get into any sort of analysis, we are going to need a list of upcoming free agents. It just so happens that mlbtraderumors.com formulates such a list every season. If you would like to access their full list of upcoming free agents, you can take a look right here. From that full list, here are the shortstops who are poised to be free agents at the conclusion of this season's World Series! Erick Aybar (33) Alcides Escobar (30) – $6.5MM club option with a $500K buyout Alexei Ramirez (35) — $4MM mutual option with a $1MM buyout Eric Sogard (31) Well that list is, well, short. Just like the second and third base markets, the shortstop market leaves much to be desired. This free agent market as a whole leaves a lot to be desired, but the infield especially. Only four guys are on this list, and one of them is not even likely to see the open market. Since there are only four names, let's just run down each one in the order they are listed. [embedit snippet="kenny-ads"] Erick Aybar is a below average player, who is getting close to his mid-30's. He spent time with both the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers in 2016, and did nothing to impress with the bat. He batted .243, and did minimal in almost every counting stat. He does not steal bases, and he does not hit homers. He can play several positions however, as he was at second, third and short in 2016. This versatility means he will catch on somewhere as a utility man, but it will only be for a year or two. Alcides Escobar is one of several players that the Kansas City Royals have an option on this winter. It is expected they will be picking up the 6.5 million dollar option for Escobar, while the same cannot be said for starter Edison Volquez. You can read more about the Royals and their options here. So while he is not the greatest with the bat, he would have been the youngest and most appealing shortstop available had the Royals decided to let him go. Given Alexei Ramirez's struggles the last few seasons, he will likely find himself on the market this winter. The San Diego Padres cut him loose in 2016, only for the Tampa Bay Rays to pick him up so they did not have to watch Tim Beckham. Ramirez had an underwhelming .241 average between the two clubs, and does not provide much by way of power or speed. He likely lands somewhere in a backup type of role, as he does 1 / 2 not appear to be starter worthy anymore. Eric Sogard missed all of 2016 with an injury, and recently joined the field after rejecting a Triple-A assignment from the Oakland A's. He is a defensive minded player who is capable of manning second, third or short. A minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training is certainly a possibility here, unless some team really wants to give the defensive minded utility man a Major League deal. So at the end of the day, no team is really loosing their starting shortstop to free agency this winter. When we take a look around the league, not too many teams have a glaring weakness at the position. Teams like the Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks, Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies could be on the lookout for an upgrade. But if any of them want to improve what they have, the trade market is going to have to be the place to go, as no starting caliber players will be found in the free agency pool for shortstop this year. Players like Zack Cozart, Ketel Marte, Jurickson Profar, Freddy Galvis, Jhonny Peralta and Danny Espinosa are some players who could be shopped. While most of those names are not exactly stars, they are surely better than this group of free agents. Be sure to check back tomorrow when we go over the outfield market! If you have not already, check out the Positional Breakdown Series Preview page to see what date we will look at each position, with links available upon the release of those articles. • Padding the Stats: a Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations
Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it? Perhaps the absence of a game clock in baseball, unlike other major sports, creates the illusion that anything is possible, and in particular that one’s team can overcome even the largest of deficits, even late in the game. And, indeed, significant comebacks from behind are possible, but are so unlikely that in some cases they’re considered to be historic. For instance, in the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies on June 8, 1989 the Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Pirates’ radio broadcaster, Jim Rooker, proclaimed that if the Phillies were to come back from the 10-run deficit he would “walk home”. As fate would have it, the Phillies ended up winning the game 15-11, prompting Mr.

September 14, 2011 Page 1 of 30 Clips (September 14, 2011) September 14, 2011 Page 2 of 30 From LATimes.com Angels' Howie Kendrick homers twice in 6-3 win over Athletics Bullpen comes to Jerome Williams' rescue and Howie Kendrick hits a couple of two-run home runs. By Mike DiGiovanna The Jerome Williams joy ride turned into a high-wire act Tuesday night. Good thing for the wild right- hander the Angels bullpen and defense were there with a safety net. Reliever Hisanori Takahashi, pitching in a rare high-leverage situation, bailed Williams out of trouble in the fifth inning of a tie game, and the veteran left-hander combined with Bobby Cassevah, Scott Downs and Jordan Walden to throw 42/3 scoreless innings. Howie Kendrick crushed a pair of two-out, two-run home runs, and the Angels turned four double plays in a 6-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics that kept them three games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West with 14 to play. Williams was 3-0 with a 3.51 earned-run average since being called up on Aug. 17, a promotion that ended a four-year odyssey that included tours in Taiwan, Mexico, Puerto Rico and two independent leagues. He walked four in 252/3 innings of his first six games but was all over the place Tuesday night, allowing three runs and seven hits and walking five in 41/3 innings. "You walk five, you're going to get killed — that's not my game," Williams said. "Fortunately, the guys behind me played their butts off and turned a few nice double plays." The Angels, who had only two hits in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position, snapped a 3-3 tie in the seventh, a rally Erick Aybar sparked with a single.

  • Kluber Tosses Gem, K's 10 for 5Th Start in a Row All-Star
Kluber tosses gem, K's 10 for 5th start in a row All-Star ace pitches eight innings of one-run ball, but loses By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | July 4th, 2017 + 1 COMMENT CLEVELAND -- Corey Kluber peered in to get the sign, but Indians catcher Yan Gomes was resting on both knees. It was then that the Indians' ace noticed the decibel level was rising at Progressive Field, along with the stadium's sellout crowd. For a brief moment, Kluber stepped off the rubber to allow the standing ovation to run its course in the eighth inning. Then, it was back to work for Kluber, whose record-setting gem went for naught in a 1-0 loss to the Padres on Tuesday night. In a tough defeat, Kluber's audience recognized his club-record fifth start in a row with double-digit strikeouts. "They got loud, which was pretty cool," Kluber said. Inside Cleveland's clubhouse after the loss, there was plenty of disappointment over seeing Kluber's eight-inning masterpiece go to waste. In the fifth, shortstop Francisco Lindor and second baseman Jason Kipnis each misfired in an attempt to turn double plays, leading to San Diego's lone run on a fielder's choice. In the batter's box, the Indians put seven runners in scoring position, yet never scored. Save for grabbing a bat himself, Kluber did all he could to try to win. Instead, in his first start since being named an American League All-Star, the right-hander took his third loss of the season.
