  • Pittsburgh Colts, Revived This Season with Brosky As Coach
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 21, No. 2 (1999) FOOTBALL’S FERTILE CRESCENT II In football, professionalism is a question of attitude “A pro, Danny? A pro is how you think of yourself." -- from the movie “About Last Night. .", as adapted from the play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” by David Mamet. By Eric Poole Reprinted from The Record In Ed Brosky's opinion, professionalism in football is about much more than getting a paycheck. And he is uniquely qualified to know. As a college player, the Chartiers Valley High School graduate was a teammate of NFL and NCAA Hall- of-Famer Tony Dorsett on the University of Pittsburgh's national championship team. A decade coaching on Western Penn-sylvania's sandlots and three seasons as the head coach at Canon-McMillan crystallized his opinion on that subject. “Professionalism is a state of mind," he says. “That should be the philosophy of any footbaII program.” It's the philosophy of the new Pittsburgh Colts, revived this season with Brosky as coach. Last Saturday, the Colts played their second home game, more than a decade after the team disbanded and 16 seasons since they played for the national championship of minor league football. In 1981, the Colts won the right to meet the Twin City (Calif.) Cougars, who became the Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League. “They beat up on us pretty good,” is all the player-coach remembers about the game, won by the Cougars. The accommodations, which were in no way minor league, were another -- longer -- story. The Colts spent the week in preparation for the game as professionals -- not just in attitude, but in prerequisites.

  • Stadium Financing
Sport Stadium Karen L. Perry and Financing Brittany J.A. Scott Agenda 1. Overview of Public Financing Methods 2. Government Rationale for Financing Stadiums 3. Reality of Publicly Funded Stadiums 4. Case Study: Calgary Flames Stadium A Brief History of Public Financing of Stadiums Post World War II – US begins to use public financing Before 1950 – only the Cleveland Indians play in a publicly funded stadium Late 1960s - public financing of sports stadiums begins 1970 - almost 70% of new stadiums are publicly financed 1990 – 43/50 major league teams received public money for stadiums 1990 – 2012 - over 89% of major league franchises in North America have had a stadium built or refurbished; over 50% of the associated costs of this, in excess of $15 billion USD, are borne by taxpayers Overview of Public Financing Methods There are three ways that governments can provide subsidies for the building of stadiums and stadium renovations: i. publicly financing with direct payments; ii. offering favorable leases to clubs; or iii. using tax-exempt bonds to finance stadium construction. Favorable Leasing Example: Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park Rent: $1.00/year to the State Broadcast Revenue: 35% of the total local broadcast revenues and signage in excess of $10M USD to the State Insurance: paid by the City of Chicago Capital Repairs: above $500,000 USD paid by the City of Chicago Tax exempt bonds: Lower interest rate than taxable private bonds One estimate: places the lifetime subsidy from tax-exempt bonds on a $250M stadium at

  • 2018 Banquet Program
Hall of Fame Watch 2018 Welcome to the 25th annual Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame Banquet. This is our silver anniversary banquet and we have a class of par excellence. Our student honorees, outstanding senior scholar-athletes chosen by their respective Mon Valley high schools, are to be commended on a job well done! It is our privilege to honor you in tonight’s ceremony alongside the athletes who came before you. Most importantly, you represent the future for our communities, commonwealth and nation. We recognize the time, energy and dedication that you have demonstrated while participating in high school athletics and maintaining your academic excellence. In the past decade, upon the recommendation of one of the original contributors to the Mon Valley Sportswriters Hall of Fame, Ron Paglia recommended recognizing WPIAL champions for our area high schools. Since it was so rare to have a Mon Valley High WPIAL winner, it appeared justified. Recently, we have entered a golden age of WPIAL champions. This year we have the privilege to recognize two teams and 11 individual champions. Belle Vernon Area High School Leopards won their fourth overall Class 4A softball (21-3) WPIAL championship (2007, 2015 and 2017). BVA has won three out of the last four years of WPIAL softball championships. Captain Bailey Parshall will accept the award for the team gold. Brownsville High School Falcons won their first ever Class 3A baseball (15-2) WPIAL championship. Our Achievement award winners for Mon Valley High School WPIAL 2017-2018 individual Gold include in wrestling Bentworth/Charleroi’s John Vargo (34-8) Class AA182 lbs.
