From the Desk of 2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Bobby Stem That Personal Relationship Matters. As I visit with many of you, I have learned that a very large percentage of our membership has a relationship with their member of the legislature. This is outstanding. Your relationship, whether with your state or federal legislator goes a long way when it comes to access and information. Please don’t take those for granted- they are important. I also encourage you to help educate US at the AOGC should you happen to have a personal relationship with a candidate who is running AGAINST someone the AOGC may be supporting. We need to know these things, and can often times use your connections to help mitigate a negative outcome! For example- in the last two elections the AOGC has been “all in” with two candidates for congress. The AOGC was heavily involved in the campaigns for these two individuals because we had strong and long standing relationships with them. However, at some point in time, during each campaign, we received a call from an AOGC member, a long standing and well respected member, Dub Ross. Both times Mr. Ross acknowledged that he was aware of our reasons for supporting our candidates, and didn’t fault us in any way for doing so. He just had one special request....please meet face to face with his friends and let them tell their story. Both times I agreed to these meetings, humbly telling Mr. Ross that I would gladly meet with his friends, but that we, as an Association, had made up our minds. If you know Dub, you can imagine how graceful he was about this, and simply reiterated that he knew we needed to make the decisions as we see fi t, but he just hoped for a small meeting. In the last 4 years your AOGC took bold steps in supporting Mike Thompson and Patrice Douglas, both were candidates for 5th District Congress. In both these elections, Dub asked us to set aside time for his good friends, James Lankford and Steve Russell. Both times we did, and both times these candidates, out of respect for Dub said that if they won, committed to appear at our Board meeting the very next day (elections are on Tuesdays, and our Board meetings usually fall the day after a large election). Well, you know the rest of the story; both won, and both kept their promise to Mr. Ross, and showed up to introduce themselves to the AOGC Board of Directors. It seems like just yesterday, we were scrambling to accommodate the biggest turnout for a GPA Convention in recent history. All the while, we were dealing with key legislative and regulatory issues, working on our own policy improvements, continuing research initiatives, growing chapter involvement, being active internationally, planning the 2012 convention and more. And speaking of legislative and regulatory issues, we are particularly proud of the outstanding efforts of our Environmental Committee’s work on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) RICE MACT and Subpart W issues. Their efforts have decisively challenged EPA into making significant changes to their rulemakings that enormously benefit GPA members. Without the efforts of this committee, GPA member companies would be subject to paying literally hundreds of millions of dollars in additional regulatory expenses.

The Commission this morning voted to accept Commissioner Douglas’ resignation, and name Commissioner Bob Anthony as Chairman and Commissioner Douglas as Vice-Chairman. The change will be effective March 1. "I remain completely committed to my service as a Corporation Commissioner, but the role of Chairman requires a lot of additional focus, with many more duties than those of a commissioner," said Douglas. "I have greatly enjoyed serving in that role, but since I have announced my campaign for Congress, I think it is only fair to the people of Oklahoma that I step back and allow one of my fellow commissioners to serve as Chairman." Commissioner Douglas said she believes Commissioner Anthony is ideally suited to serve as Chairman, and that she will work with him to make sure the transition is a smooth one. "Commissioner Anthony has a great depth of knowledge and experience when it comes to the issues before the Commission," said Douglas. “I look forward to working with him to ensure the smoothest possible transition." While Chairman, Douglas focused on bringing private sector principles to the commission.
