The Report aptly reflects the sustained pace of growth and development of the University during this year. The year also witnessed several international and national workshops, conferences and seminars where speakers from different parts of the world presented their findings. The student strength in various disciplines this year (2010-11) stood at 4746, out of which over 43.91% are research scholars pursuing Ph.D. and M. Phil. / M. Tech. programmes. Women students constitute 32.89% of the total strength. 31.57% of the students are from reserved (SC/ST/PH) categories. Besides, more than 1511 students were enrolled in 14 P.G. Diploma courses. At the University of Hyderabad, all eligible students in various disciplines and who were not getting any fellowship from any other source were provided with fellowship & contingency grant while the class topper receives the University Achievers’ Award. The Study in India Programme (SIP) of the University aims at providing an opportunity for foreign students to experience and study not only the various aspects of Indian society, history and culture but also sciences and information technology and in the process creates an international environment on the University campus. The Programme emphasizes heritage, continuity and change in India. Under the SIP, a number of interdisciplinary courses were offered to participants from North American and European universities. The University of Hyderabad can rightly boast of a highly qualified and internationally renowned faculty. Our faculty, numbering 399, produced over1168 research publications including 66 books during the year. They also contributed to the award of 113 Ph.D., 174 M.Phil. 113 M. Tech. and 653 postgraduate degrees. The faculty earned research funding for the individual research projects numbering 440 with a total outlay of over rupees 112.65 crores from various national and international agencies. These projects supported 318 research scholars. Several consultancy and industry sponsored projects were also undertaken through MoUs. Over the year our faculty members have been honoured with several national and international fellowships and awards of leading academies in India and abroad like the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), ACLS, Montserrat, Homi Bhabha, vii Swarna Jayanti and Sophios Fellowships. These include the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize, Fellowship of Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc), Indian National Science Academy (FNA), National Academy of Sciences (FNASc), Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) Award, C.L. Chandna Award of the Indo-Canadian Math. Foundation, INSA Young Scientist Award, Thomson Scientific Award, Ramon Magsaysay Award, Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Third World Academy of Sciences Award, the Einstein Medal, German Academic Exchange Fellowship, Japan Science and Technology Fellowship, DAAD (Germany) Fellowship, Albert Shankar International Award, Birla Science Award, SS Bhatnagar Award, Sahitya Academy Award, J.C. Also, the faculty participated actively in the working of organizations like CSIR, UGC, DST, DAE, DBT, ICMR, NBHM, ICHR, ICPR and ICSSR in various capacities throughout the year as expert members. Established in 1974 by an Act of Parliament, the University of Hyderabad, once widely considered only as a research University and barely known outside about its sphere of operations, has today emerged as one of the top ranking Institutions of higher learning in the country. Receiving the PURSE Award from the Prime Minister of India for being No. 2 in the country two years ago preceded by a string of other distinctions: ‘A’ Grade by NAAC with a CGPA equivalent of 97%, the highest ever score for any institution in the country; SCOPUS ranking of No. 1 in terms of research publications; and the Quacquarelli Symonds (QNS) 2010 ranking of top 200 Asian Universities are all indicators of the new growth trajectory of the University of Hyderabad. The Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication and the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS) have been designated as "Centres of Excellence" by a study commissioned by the Research Councils UK (RCUK). The Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora has also been highlighted under the Potential for Excellence.
