An enterprising, tenacious, and creative man, he is the progenitor of a family that has made the combination of inspiration and tradition something of which to be proud. The first wine cellar was built by Giuseppe, son of the founder Giovanni, who, together with his sister Angela, extended his estate into the best soils. In the 1990s, Franco and Roberto, both oenologists, joined the family estate. Their work condenses the experience of an entire family and the ambition of a new generation, determined to make an important contribution to the innovation of oenological and agronomical techniques and to the image of the estate in Italy and abroad. 2015 BAROLO CRUS Brothers Franco and Roberto Massolino turned out a gorgeous set of 2015 Barolos. The Massolinos gave the 2015s about 21 days on the skins. Both primary and secondary fermentation were done in cement, and the wines were aged in cask. More than those details, though, these Barolos stand out because they are very expressive to site, something that was not easy to achieve in 2015.” -Antonio Galloni, November 2018 Massolino Barolo Crus Pack Size Score Ex Cellars Western 2015 Margheria Barolo 6 x 750ml 93+ points Vinous (2/15/19) $243.00 $253.50 2015 Parafada Barolo 6 x 750ml 93 points Vinous (2/15/19) $243.00 $253.50 2015 Parussi Barolo 6 x 750ml 93 points Vinous (2/15/19) $243.00 $253.50 2013 Vigna Rionda 6 x 750ml 95+ points Vinous (2/15/19) $444.00 $454.50 Riserva Barolo • 3-case Minimum Order. What is your role with the company? How long have you been working with your family? What different roles have you held over the years? I have worked with my family since 2010. When I first started, I was only in charge of events. Now I focus on the consumer. I also follow up on allocations with our Beaucastel wines & Perrin parcellaires. I am very lucky to be part of all the construction and landscaping projects (most recently Clos des Tourelles, and the upcoming Beaucastel project) and this takes a lot of my time.. And as in every family business, I am always involved in different parts of our day to day activities (back office, human resources for our team in the offices, tastings). Time flies... Why did you choose to join the family business? Did you work somewhere else before or did you “jump in” right after your studies? After I finished business school in Paris, I worked as a product manager assistant for Champagne Veuve Clicquot. It was a great opportunity, but only for a year as I was working as a replacement for maternity leave. Then I worked with Hermès, as a junior product manager for the leather accessories and jewels division. After that, I worked for Amazon in Paris. All these experiences were great and really formative. I also worked for an event planner and this is how I joined the family business. In 2010, we started to think about leaving Paris and I wanted to come back in the wine business. First, I came to help on a big event in Beaucastel and Gigondas for the family and I never left. History, roots, and wine passion made me stay! How did you know wine is what you wanted to do? How did you avoid burnout-- being surrounded by wine your entire life but still loving it? When I worked for Champagne and saw what Champagne is capable of creating, I began to think that we can do a lot of things with our wine too. I was already passionate but more because of family and cultural ties. It was once I understood what the wine business really is and what it can generate, I knew it was what I wanted to do. I don’t know lot of products as complex as wine that generate such passion even from people who don’t work in the wine business. With wine, you have passion, terroir, history, marketing, sales, technique, sciences, food, gastronomy... It is such a great environment and it prevents burnout because you can work every day on a different approach, so you still want to taste and have a glass of wine on Saturday night. What is the greatest joy you have as an owner in the day to day management of the business? What keeps you coming back day after day? Day after day, I am proud to be part of the best family team ever. Working together with the same goal: making great wines and running the business at least as well as our fathers did, not for us but for the next generations. I have two kids, Jeanne who is 7 and Oscar who is 2. I hope that one day they and their kids will be as proud of my generation as we are when we talk about Jacques or Jean-Pierre and François. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given from someone else in the wine business? No rush, the greatest achievements (like great wines) need work and time. PRODUCER NEWS Marqués de Cáceres has introduced a new label for the Cava, which will begin shipping in July. In addition to the new label, there is a new grape source and blend.

  • The History Today
TheDelamotte History is a Champagne house more than 250 years old (it is the sixth oldest Champagne house) founded in Reims in 1760 by François Delamotte, a vineyard owner. He and other Champagne producers were the creators of a tradition based on quality. Their modus operandi, far from being viewed as quaint, earned them a place in the Encyclopedia of Physiocrates. Their practices have been used as a model and a paradigm by other businesses due to their progressive outlook and insistence on quality. They were truly modern-minded people. Their masterpiece – the wines – continue to be recreated anew each year and the house of Delamotte is a prime example of the traditions of quality they embody. Alexandre Delamotte brought the cellars, caves and offices of the House of Delamotte to one beautiful mansion at the end of the 18th century. In 1828, his brother, Nicolas Louis Delamotte, also known as the Chevalier Delamotte Barrachin, a former Chevalier de Malte and President of the Chamber of Commerce of Reims, assumed management of the House of Delamotte. In this tenure with the Chamber of Commerce, Nicolas was well known for hosting spectacular events, namely the coronation of France’s last King, Charles X. Serge Chapuis The House was sold to the Lanson family in the 1830’s, who later started producing a Lanson label. It was eventually acquired by Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, née Lanson, in the period between the two World Wars. In 1927, Marie-Louise made the decision to transfer the activities of the house of Delamottte to Mesnil-sur-Oger.

LAURENT-PERRIER GROUP ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021 THE HOUSE 06 . 07 PORTRAIT THE HOUSE Innovator in Champagne Laurent-Perrier is a family-owned House that has always had a pioneering and innovating role in Champagne. Through its engagement in Sustainable Viticulture of the Champagne vineyards, and with each of its Cuvées, the House was created around 4 strong convictions: The assemblage, not the vintage Blending is the real secret of the Champagne region’s quality. Laurent-Perrier is the only House that's most prestigious and exacting Cuvée, Grand Siècle, is not vintage but numbered. It is an assemblage of 3 exceptional vintages in order to recreate the perfect year. A unique and distinctive style: freshness, elegance and purity These characteristics are present in each of the Laurent-Perrier Cuvées, always marked by aromatic complexity and exceptional fullness and length in the mouth. Chardonnay Chardonnay is the majority grape variety in all of the House’s wines, with the exception of Cuvée Rosé and Alexandra Rosé. The Chardonnay grape variety brings freshness, finesse and elegance to the assemblage, and makes the Laurent-Perrier style so distinct from other Houses. The expression of Pinot Noir Maceration depending on the harvest allows it to obtain unequalled aromas, revealing all the richness of the best Crus of Pinot Noir. MANY WINES, ONE HISTORY More than 200 years of history committed to champagne and Champagne area 1812 Established in Tours-sur-Marne, in the heart of the Champagne country, the House took the name of Veuve Laurent-Perrier when Mathilde-Émilie Perrier, the widow of Cellar Master Eugène Laurent, took over the running of the House in 1887.

  • Why Second-Label Wines Are a Smart Choice and an Excellent Value
Why Second-Label Wines Are a Smart Choice and an Excellent Value Often these approachable bottles provide a taste of the talents of first-rate winemakers at a fraction of the cost of their flagship wines BEST SUPPORTING Approachable, affordable bottles from producers whose output is otherwise quite dear or rare, second-label wines can offer top-notch value. ILLUSTRATION: DAVID DORAN By Lettie Teague Aug. 6, 2020 11:55 am ET “SECOND” IS an inherently disappointing word. Second place. Second class. Second rate. And yet, as the second-born of two, I believe “second” can also signal something of worth, especially when it comes to the second wines of winemakers who are first-rate. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS Has a second-label wine allowed you to try a wine from a vineyard that otherwise might be out of reach or unavailable? Join the conversation below. What’s known as a second or second-label wine might be produced from grapes that didn’t make the cut for a winery’s flagship bottling. Or it might be made by the same winemaking team as the flagship, but in a different location, with different types of grapes. Often it’s a wine made in larger quantities than a producer’s “first” wine and priced much lower. The second-label concept probably originated in Bordeaux, where a winery’s first-label bottling is known as its grand vin. I’ve tasted some seconds from that region that were quite good and some that were worse than mediocre. (One recent standout: the 2016 Confidences de Prieuré- Lichine, second label of Château Prieuré-Lichine.) In the excellent book “The Complete Bordeaux,” wine writer Stephen Brook notes that “...there is no clear line in the sand between the quality required for the grand and the second wines.

Statement of Principles It is important that readers understand how I collect and evaluate the information that is reported in the pages of Burghound.com (the tasting notes and information are the sole responsibility of the author). I am personally responsible for all of my business expenses without exception. This includes airfare, hotels and effectively all of my meals. The purpose is as clear as it is simple: No conflicts of interest. I do not accept nor do I seek any subsidy, in any form, from anybody. Sample bottles are accepted for evaluation and commentary, much as book reviewers accept advance copies of new releases. I insist, however, that these sample bottles represent the final wines to be sold under that particular label. Finished, bottled wines are assigned scores as these wines are market-ready. Wines tasted from barrel, however, are scored within a range. This reflects the reality that a wine tasted from barrel is not a finished product. Wines are evaluated within the context of their appellations. Simply put, that means I expect a grand cru Burgundy to reflect its exalted status.

2008 VINTAGE RELEASE EXCLUSIVE TO CORNEY & BARROW IN THE UNITED KINGDOM ”Tout dans ce vin est équilibre, force et grâce.” ”This wine is an exercise in balance, power and grace.” DIDIER DEPOND President Champagne Delamotte Champagne Salon Based in the Côte des Blancs in the village of Le Mesnil- sur-Oger - perhaps the greatest grand cru of all – the House of Delamotte is an unapologetic champion of the chardonnay grape. The local in-joke refers to it as ‘the other great blanc de blancs’– a wink to legendary sister house Champagne Salon, with whom it shares so much DNA, as well as its elegant headquarters, ownership and management team. But Champagne Delamotte needs no starry guarantor, even one as impeccable as Salon, to attest to the quality and refinement of its wines. And let us not forget: a great champagne is first and INTRODUCTION foremost a great wine; this is the premise and challenge that drives Champagne Delamotte today, as it did from the very beginning. This demands an absolute commitment to quality, rooted in hard work: meticulous and constant Champagne Delamotte maintains an attention to detail in the vineyard and the cellar; perspiration/inspiration; and the constant remise en understated profile, one that might question – the self-questioning, the ‘proving’ of tradition seem unusual for a House of its history, and technique – that drives improvement. pedigree and absolute quality.
