In 2017, 1.34 million Australians took an ocean cruise, reflecting a 5.7% market penetration rate – the highest in the world. Growth, whilst still healthy was down to 4.4% on the previous year. Industry ‘growing pains’: • Queensland – until now, no dedicated cruise facilities along the coastline, mega cruise ships must call at cargo ports • Sydney – the city’s existing cruise facilities are constrained and congested, with limited room for growth • Melbourne – a facility that’s adapted for cruise, not built for it.
