SHOW 11 DISC 4 TRACK 9 1. This next band beat the Boss to the #'! spot on the Billboard Album Chart. It happened the week Bruce Springsteen reltiased not one but two albums: the long awaited "HUMAN TOUCH" and "LUCKY TOWN" blasted on to the chart at #2 & #3. Debuting above him in the top spot was "ADRENZALIZE" by Def Leppard. And, we asked singer Joe Elliot what that chart aj~hievement felt like? JOE ELLIOT ACTUALITY: (:32) "It was great, and we wertL_Iike wow, it's still #1, it's like wow, #1 again! This went on for five weeks. If I'm totally honest with you, when "Hysteria" got to #1, it was probably the most excited we'd ever get about #1 because that was the first time we'd hit #1 in the states. Everybody was just leaping up and down, hugging each other, going, yes! We did do the same thing when 'Adrenalize' made #1, but I think it was exciting to think that the guy that represented in our eyes, the American Dream, this scuzzy little English band, were holding him from the #1 spot. It was a nice feeling. And that's no disrespect at Bruce Springsteen. lfs over, I'm obviously going to be pushing for us more than I'm gonna be pushing for him." • Runaway American Dream, Hope and Disillusion in the Early Work
Runaway American Dream HOPE AND DISILLUSION IN THE EARLY WORK OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Two young Mexican immigrants who risk their lives trying to cross the border; thousands of factory workers losing their jobs when the Ohio steel industry collapsed; a Vietnam veteran who returns to his hometown, only to discover that he has none anymore; and young lovers learning the hard way that romance is a luxury they cannot afford. All of these people have two things in common. First, they are all disappointed that, for them, the American dream has failed. Rather, it has become a bitter nightmare from which there is no waking up. Secondly, their stories have all been documented by the same artist – a poet of the poor as it were – from New Jersey. Over the span of his 43-year career, Bruce Springsteen has captured the very essence of what it means to dream, fight and fail in America. That journey, from dreaming of success to accepting one’s sour destiny, will be the main subject of this paper. While the majority of themes have remained present in Springsteen’s work up until today, the way in which they have been treated has varied dramatically in the course of those more than forty years. It is this evolution that I will demonstrate in the following chapters. But before looking at something as extensive as a life-long career, one should first try to create some order in the large bulk of material. Many critics have tried to categorize Springsteen’s work in numerous ‘phases’. Some of them have reasonable arguments, but most of them made the mistake of creating strict chronological boundaries between relatively short periods of time1, unfortunately failing to see the numerous connections between chronologically remote works2 and the continuity that Springsteen himself has pointed out repeatedly.

His first albums received critical claim with comparisons to Bob Dylan, but did not sell well with the fans. Bruce Springsteen's career had begun. Springsteen was born in Freehold, New Jersey, on September 23, 1949. He grew up in a "normal middle class family" and first started playing around with the guitar in High School. After graduating from High School he moved to New York to try and break into the Folk Music scene. After getting nowhere on this front he returned to, be it reluctantly, to Asbury Park, N.J. and hooked up with a number of bands. With brief stints with such bands as Rogues and Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom, Springsteen found himself a place with the E-Street Band, and with them he remained until 1989. Though, this wouldn't be the last time they would play together. The 1973 albums marked the beginning of Springsteen's career and since then, "The Boss" has sold tens of millions of albums and won over legions of loyal fans worldwide in his 30 plus years as a "rock and roll legend". His break came after a tour with the band Chicago. Springsteen captivated the audiences in these live shows, and seeing an opportunity, the singer-songwriter came up with what is called his breakthrough effort Born to Run in 1974.

Last Thursday, at the Harvard Square theatre, I saw my rock’n’roll past flash before my eyes. And I saw something else: I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the very first time…” Jon Landau, 1974. Landau would go on to become Bruce’s manager. He didn’t believe Springsteen’s music was simply retro soul and rock and roll, but that he took his musical influences, i.e. Presley, Berry, Orbison, Spector and Dylan, and formed his own distinctive sound. Springsteen didn’t reinvent rock and roll; he made his own stamp and developed his own signature. Just as you can listen to any Berry song and say,” that’s the Chuck Berry sound.” you can listen to a Bruce song and say “that’s the Springsteen sound.” Course description: This is a six-week course. American Roots Music Legacy in the Songs of Bruce Springsteen. Supervisor: William Bradley Vice, Ph.D. This thesis deals with Bruce Springsteen’s use of American roots music. It shows how exactly he fits in the framework of this tradition, and what are the main connections. Springsteen’s life is briefly outlined prior to the release of his break-through album Born to Run to provide a personal context. This thesis is divided into two chapters. The first one is concerned with the mentioned biography. The second one is further divided into two subchapters that shortly discuss what exactly the term “American roots music” means, and then there are analysis of the two selected trilogies. The first trilogy is his formative one where he had explored the distance between American Dream and reality.

  • Special Collections Denise Green’S Library of Hope and Dreams Denise Green Is a Springsteen Fan and a Research Librarian at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois
129 Special Collections Denise Green’s Library of Hope and Dreams Denise Green is a Springsteen fan and a research librarian at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. In the summer of 2009, Green set out to discover what scholars had published about Bruce Springsteen and began compiling an online annotated bibliography. She combed electronic databases and indexing services to locate scholarly publications, and found other items by consulting bibliographies in published articles and monographs on Springsteen. Apart from peer-reviewed articles and publications in academic journals and books, Green identified works of scholarship on Springsteen according to Ernest Boyer’s definition: effectively researched publications with clear goals, defined methods, significant results, appropriate rhetorical form, and argumentative critique.1 At the time of this publication, Green’s Library of Hope and Dreams resource includes 293 entries: 130 journal articles, 149 book chapters, 6 conference proceedings, 5 monographs, and 3 web publications. The Library of Hope and Dreams bibliography is presented in spreadsheet format that includes standard bibliographic data along with concise annotations. Green has included a number of index fields that will be of particular interest to Springsteen scholars. For each publication, she has listed up to four songs and/or albums that are referenced and provided Library of Congress subject keywords and headings. Informative and occasionally qualitative comments appear in her “Misc” column. Green intends to further develop her website by creating a separate listing of Springsteen biographies. • Image, Authenticity, and the Career of Bruce Springsteen
"Is that me, Baby?" Image, Authenticity, and the Career of Bruce Springsteen Elizabeth Bird Introduction In 1985, "Dr. Ruth" Westheimer declared that "Bruce is a national monu ment."1 Anyone in America at that time knew she could only be referring to Bruce Springsteen, the rock star known as "The Boss." Although Springsteen is still a star in the early 1990s, he has shifted from center stage, and his "authentic" image is seen largely as an anachronism. In this paper, I examine the career of Springsteen—from rock star to cultural icon, and then back again. I aim to shed light on the construction of rock music celebrity in American culture, suggesting that Springsteen's career illustrates a shift in the nature of rock culture in the 1980s. I do not take the stance of a critic or analyst of Springsteen's music; rather I offer a kind of meta-analysis—looking at how the various texts of contemporary popular culture changed his image from one of "authenticity" to one with multiple, contradictory facets. To be a true "superstar" in the 1980s and 1990s, a celebrity's image must become multi- faceted and potentially open to many "readings," and Springsteen's became so after 1984. In a postmodern culture of proliferating images, "authenticity" has become one choice among many, but is no longer a defining notion in popular music. Thus the issue is not whether Springsteen is authentic or not. Rather, I seek to explore the salience of the idea of authenticity in rock music culture. Before presenting this analysis, I should provide a brief outline of Springsteen's life and career up until 1984.
