Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

Patterson This dissertation explores highly influential constructions of the past at a key turning point in Chinese history by mapping out what I term a poetics of memory in the more than four hundred poems written by Du Fu !" (712-770) during his two-year stay in the remote town of Kuizhou (modern Fengjie County #$%). A survivor of the catastrophic An Lushan rebellion (756-763), which transformed Tang Dynasty (618-906) politics and culture, Du Fu was among the first to write in the twilight of the Chinese medieval period. His most prescient anticipation of mid-Tang concerns was his restless preoccupation with memory and its mediations, which drove his prolific output in Kuizhou. For Du Fu, memory held the promise of salvaging and creatively reimagining personal, social, and cultural identities under conditions of displacement and sweeping social change. The poetics of his late work is characterized by an acute attentiveness to the material supports—monuments, rituals, images, and texts—that enabled and structured connections to the past. The organization of the study attempts to capture the range of Du Fu’s engagement with memory’s frameworks and media. It begins by examining commemorative poems that read Kuizhou’s historical memory in local landmarks, decoding and rhetorically emulating great deeds of classical exemplars.

This Euro-centric focus is one of the paradoxes of fantasy literature: while fantasy takes place in altered or entirely invented worlds, there is no expectation that these invented culture(s) will be significantly different than the cultures with which Western readers are already familiar. The characters of fantasy texts tend to be equally familiar, as they are disproportionately white, male, able-bodied, heterosexual, and middle-class. Fantasy thus encodes a set of values that is not only Euro- centric, but patriarchal and traditional as well. This trend has begun to shift in recent years, however, as more texts begin to portray non-Western settings and otherwise challenge the traditional values that the genre has typically upheld. Prof. Bol has written extensively about this period of Chinese history, whereas Prof. Kirby's expertise is in modern history. When does modern China begin? The Song Dynasty, running from the 10th to the 13th centuries, influenced economic, commercial, and political life in China well into the 19th and 20th centuries. The Southern Song was more cosmopolitan than the Tang and its economy rested more on private enterprise. Farmers owned their land and prospered in ways not possible under the Tang. The Song created the foundation for a millennium of civil service exams that ended only in 1905: an exemplar of civil meritocracy - what the Japanese scholar Miyazaki called 'China's examination hell.'76 The Song was also a time of division, of foreign invasion. With the increasingly private economy and a new Confucianism, the Song relocated moral authority from the state to the individual, in contrast with the perception of China as an unbroken lineage of centralized authoritarian regimes.77 It was also a time of great invention: gunpowder, the mariner's compass, paper currency. Commercial printing meant knowledge could be spread less expensively than ever. The book is heavy on exposition and the space opera style plot moves slowly, but the ideas are very engaging. MaddAddam, by Margaret Atwood The conclusion to Atwood’s trilogy which began with Oryx and Crake and continued with The Year of the Flood. A waterless flood has wiped out most of humanity. Ren and Toby have returned to the MaddAddamite cob house, while Zeb, searching for God's Gardeners founder, Adam One, discov- ers his past. A wonderful dystopian novel from one of the writers who created the genre, and readable even if you have not read the first two books. The Best of Connie Willis : Award-Winning Stories Connie Willis has won six Nebula Awards and ten Hugos—the most of any SF or Fantasy Author (although Robert Heinlein and Lois McMaster Bujold have won the Hugo for “Best Novel” more times than she has—Willis “only” won the Hugo for “Best Novel” three times). Originally written as an ordinary Canto-pop song in 1984, the “Chinese Dream” joined the ranks of protest songs calling for Chinese democracy when Hong Kong people mobilized to support Chinese students in 1989.
