The Original Broadway Cast Recording: Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz June 6th, 2014 Spotlight on Music: Wicked: The Original Broadway Cast Recording: Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz So much happened before Dorothy dropped in... ...And so begins one of the best known musicals of the past decade. Wicked, which celebrated its 10th Anniversary this past October, is based on the book of the same name by Gregory McGuire, which, in turn, is based on the classic novel by L. Frank Baum. It tells the story of Elphaba, the soon-to-be Wicked Witch of the West and her best friend Glinda, following their years together at Shiz University and eventually running parallel to the story of the Dorothy, Oz's original heroine. The musical's original cast was led by Idina Menzel (best known today for her performance as Queen Elsa in Frozen) and Kristen Chenoweth (recognizable for her performances in the TV shows Pushing Daisies and Glee) and features a soaring score courtesy of Stephen Schwartz. The Act I finale Defying Gravity has become a well-known and well-loved Broadway anthem that perfectly encapsulates the musical’s sense of discovery and empowerment as Elphaba embraces her “wickedness” and the magic that defines her character (complete with flying broomstick) Wicked is a delightful retelling of an iconic story that should appeal to all audiences, whether you are a musical lover or not. Every performer shines in a best-selling, Tony Award winning effort as they jump from the numbers like the hilarious Popular to the heartrending ensemble piece No One Mourns the Wicked, to a personal favourite of mine For Good. This Sunday is the 2014 Tony Awards, celebrating the best American Theatre has to offer. Have your own celebration and tune in to watch Wicked be honoured for its 10 year run along with performances from this year’s nominees or check out the Yellowknife Public Library’s large collection of original Broadway soundtracks and film adaptations of classic musicals -Review by Emma Welsh .

    “The Good, The Bad, The Wicked: Lessons from Oz” by Dr. Brian Howell Assistant Professor of Anthropology , Wheaton College What could be a more unambiguous, self-identified portrait of evil than a green faced Witch surrounded by creepy flying monkeys? Her very name, the Wicked Witch of the West, sets the tone pretty clearly. She’s Bad; Glinda is Good; the wizard is a bumbler but a well-intentioned guy and Dorothy is haplessly caught in the middle. But the hottest ticket on Broadway says, “Not so fast.” Perhaps having a green face and wearing unfashionable black hats is not enough to make you Wicked. In fact, perhaps “goodness” and “wickedness” are not such clear-cut categories at all. In a musical “prequel” to the film “The Wizard of Oz,” the audience is challenged to re-evaluate the judgements of good and evil, tapping into the powerful cultural theme of authenticity at the same time. The Broadway musical “Wicked” is based on a book of the same name that tells the story of Elphaba (nee The Wicked Witch of the West) and her early history in the land of Oz. Born an unnatural shade of green due to the dalliances of her mother, Elphaba is misunderstood and ostracized, particularly when enrolling in a boarding school for aspiring Witches and Wizards (Shiz Academy). There she finds herself rooming with Galinda (later to become Glinda, The Good Witch), who inspires her to travel to the Emerald City in order to meet the Wizard. Elphaba, you see, has true magical gifts, and her only dream has been to meet and work with the Wizard, the Great and Powerful Oz.

    A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan One year ago, we came together at the Gershwin Theatre for the very first Arts for Autism concert. Dozens of Broadway actors joined more than 150 young performers to take part in a show that inspired, educated and entertained us. It was uplifting to see so many passionate artists collaborate to raise awareness, encourage acceptance and to celebrate the power of the arts. We also witnessed the Broadway debut of Gina Hitsos, a young singer with autism who found her voice through the magic of music. There was an infectious feeling of love, excitement and optimism as everyone left the theatre that night. After a year of planning and projects we are back! We have many new and exciting developments since last June. After debuting a special arrangement of “Defying Gravity” in last year’s concert, we released a music video to share the beautiful message with an even wider audience. In February, we ventured out to the Ice Plant Recording studios in Queens with three former Broadway Elphabas from Wicked to reimagine the song we know and love. You can find the video on our website at ArtsForAutism.net. In May, we joined Autism Speaks at MetLife Stadium for the Northern New Jersey Walk. We were thrilled to be there and show our support. Jacque and our talented musicians serenaded and entertained the walkers; it was wonderful to see firsthand the positive impact that music can have. Now it’s June, and here we are again at the Gershwin Theatre.

My contribution is to take the character -- created by the playwright and acted out by the actor -- and reinvent it for the reader.” Al Hirschfeld in The World of Hirschfeld, 1970 Al Hirschfeld was born in St. Louis in 1903 but his family moved to New York City in 1914 where he would remain for most of the next 90 years. Always the artist making drawings, prints and paintings, Hirschfeld completed artwork for more than twenty publications including The Herald Tribune, The New Yorker, The Los Angeles Times, Business Week, Playbill, TV Guide, Town & Country, Playboy, People, Collier’s, Life, Time, Look, Rolling Stone, and Reader’s Digest. In 1943 Hirschfeld married Dolly Haas who was a well-known European actress he met when on assignment to draw a sketch of a summer theater company. The two were married for just over 50 years and had one daughter, the famous Nina. Finding her name hidden in his drawings became an obsession for some of his fans.
