Match background

FC BATE Borisov were ten minutes away from securing a maiden victory in the UEFA Champions League group stage on Matchday 3 before Fatih Tekke earned FC Zenit St. Petersburg their first point in Group H. The teams renew their rivalry knowing that the prospect of obtaining one of the qualifying places has become more distant. • BATE had previously lost all six matches against Russian opposition in UEFA club competition but that statistic looked like changing at the Petrovsky Stadium thanks to half-time substitute Pavel Nekhaychik's cool finish after 52 minutes. The home team had earlier struck the woodwork twice and passed up a host of other opportunities, but finally drew level when Tekke evaded the BATE offside trap to shoot past Sergei Veremko. • The Belarussian debutants have two points, one more than Zenit who remain bottom of the section. Both teams are some way behind leaders Juventus and Real Madrid CF who have seven and six points respectively. • In their last home game, BATE assumed they were destined to pick up all three points as they hurled themselves at Juventus' back line and were rewarded with two goals in the opening 23 minutes. Sergei Kryvets and Igor Stasevich scored to underline to an exuberant crowd that the underdogs are no respecters of reputation. However Juventus refused to give up without a fight and, with a header followed by a low drive, Vincenzo Iaquinta brought the visitors level before the break. • A point might have been considered a poor return for BATE's early dominance but at least it got them off the mark in the section, having started with a 2-0 defeat in Madrid. In on Matchday 2, Zenit slid to their second defeat as they followed up their narrow defeat in – Alessandro Del Piero giving Juventus the points through a late free-kick – with a 2-1 home reverse against Los Merengues. • Coach Dick Advocaat's team were put on the back foot when defender Tomáš Hubočan put through his own net early on. The Russian champions' were rattled at that stage but gradually found their stride and when record signing levelled midway through the opening period, Zenit appeared to be building the momentum to go on and dominate. However, Madrid's response was swift and deadly, Ruud van Nistelrooy taking advantage of more defensive uncertainty to ensure Bernd Schuster's team claimed the spoils.

• The game on Matchday 3 was the first time Zenit had faced Belarussian opposition in an official game while BATE had met Russian opponents on six previous occasions in European club competition. They had lost all six and moreover had only scored a single goal in those meetings. That came in their first of those six fixtures, a home game in the 1999/00 UEFA Cup qualifying round tie, but as FC Lokomotiv Moskva rattled in seven goals of their own that day, BATE's single strike was scarcely relevant. The away leg ended 5-0 to Lokomotiv to complete a 12-1 aggregate defeat for the Borisov club. • Heavy aggregate defeats also followed in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup second qualifying round against FC Krylya Sovetov Samara (4-0) and at the same stage of the same competition the following year, FC Rubin Kazan beating them 5-0 over the two games. BATE lost 2-0 in the home legs of both those ties. • Advocaat was in charge of the Netherlands team who twice defeated in the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying campaign. They won 3-0 in Eindhoven and 2-0 in Minsk. Zenit's Fernando Ricksen played in the Eindhoven game on 7 September 2002. • The other game in Group H on Matchday 3 pits Madrid against Juventus.

"We won as our two forwards can make a goal out of nothing. Obviously I'd like to keep this united, high-quality squad together but I understand that this will be virtually impossible. Many of our guys will receive tempting offers. We'll try, but it will be hard to keep them. The majority have already won everything there is to win in Belarus." • Bliznyuk is the league's top scorer with 16 goals, two less than he scored last season – Rodionov is joint second after registering his 14th of the campaign, one goal short of his 2007 haul. • BATE had returned to domestic action following Matchday 3 by defeating FC Dinamo Brest 1-0 on 25 October. • Maksim Zhavnerchik has not appeared for the Belarussian titleholders since their defeat by Real Madrid CF and was removed from the squad prior to their draw with Juventus. "I consider him one of BATE's most promising players," said Goncharenko. "Unfortunately, he doesn't have the desire to develop his game. If someone does not work properly, and does that over a long period of time, I have to make radical decisions." • Goncharenko is yet to experience a Vysshaya Liga defeat with BATE having taken charge on 13 November 2007. The side did, however, lose 6-3 on aggregate against FC MTZ-RIPO Minsk in the Belarus Cup semi-finals in April. Fayzulin (8) scored his second goal in as many games to put the home side ahead but, after goals from Andrei Karyaka (10) and Marko Topic (42), it needed a Fatih Tekke strike eight minutes from time to rescue a point for Zenit. • Zyryanov missed the game through suspension – the first time this season he has failed to feature in a Premier-Liga match. • Fatih's goal was his fifth in as many games in all competitions, though he was subsequently kept at bay by Khimki. • Zenit recorded their biggest ever win in the Premier-Liga when they defeated FC Luch-Energia Vladivostok 8-1 on 5 October, despite Anatoliy Tymoshchuk missing an early penalty. Head coach FC BATE Borisov: Viktor Goncharenko Date of birth: 10 June 1977 Nationality: Belarussian Playing career: FC RUOR Minsk, FC BATE Borisov Coaching career: FC BATE Borisov Viktor Goncharenko's playing career as a defender with FC BATE Borisov was cut short aged 25 because of ruptured left knee ligaments. He immediately switched his attention to coaching, taking over the club's reserves and guiding them to second-placed finishes in 2005 and 2006 before graduating to become the assistant to first-team coach Igor Kriushenko. In 2007 he replaced Kriushenko on a temporary basis when the latter developed health problems and guided BATE to five wins in his six matches in charge. When Kriushenko departed for FC Dinamo Minsk in November of that year, Goncharenko got his big break with the newly-crowned champions. He had his work cut out, however, with the side in transition after a number of key departures and the retirement of long-term goalkeeper Aleksandr Fedorovich. His purchases of the likes of Vladimir Rzhevski from Finland's third tier as well as Sergei Sosnovski and Sergei Veremko proved the shrewdest of moves. Indeed, as the 2008 Vysshaya Liga campaign began he guided the club to a ten-match winning streak and that summer helped BATE become the first Belarussian representatives in the UEFA Champions League group stage. "I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have an outstanding team with great potential," he said after his side sealed their passage having beaten Valur Reykjavík, RSC Anderlecht and PFC Levski Sofia in qualifying. "Our dream has come true." Goncharenko's signings played key parts. Rzhevski and Sosnovski both scored against Levski while it was the heroics of Veremko that kept them in the first leg in Sofia, the keeper capping a stunning performance by saving a penalty as BATE won 1-0. Such was the coach's confidence that at half-time during the 1-1 draw in the return and with BATE down to ten men he left the dressing room after just a few minutes, explaining: "My team were completely in control and there was no sense me bending their ears with unnecessary instructions."

FC Zenit St. Petersburg: Dick Advocaat Date of birth: 27 September 1947 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: ADO Den Haag (twice), Roda JC, VVV Venlo, Chicago Sting (twice), Sparta Rotterdam, K. Berchem Sport, FC Utrecht Coaching career: DSVP, Netherlands (assistant), HFC Haarlem, FC Dordrecht, Netherlands (assistant), Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven, Rangers FC, Netherlands, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, United Arab Emirates, Korea Republic, FC Zenit St. Petersburg Dick Advocaat has earned plenty of honours in his long coaching career but FC Zenit St. Petersburg's victory against his former club Rangers FC in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup final in Manchester constituted his first European club trophy. His second was not long in coming as Manchester United FC were then defeated in the UEFA Super Cup three months later. Advocaat enjoyed unequivocal success with Rangers between 1998 and 2002. In his first two years after replacing Walter Smith, the side won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup, adding another League Cup in 2002. It took the lure of international football, and a second spell as Netherlands coach, to entice him away from Glasgow. Advocaat guided the Oranje to UEFA EURO 2004™ thanks to a 6-1 aggregate triumph over Scotland in the play-offs, and then in Portugal to the semi-finals before losing to the hosts. He quit directly, going on to have short stints with VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach and also the United Arab Emirates before leading the Korea Republic at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Following a group-stage exit in Germany, he took the reins at Zenit that July and in 2007 steered the team to their first Russian championship. His penchant for travel perhaps began during his modest playing career, which brought two spells with Chicago Sting. Even as his playing days wound down, he began coaching with amateur side DSVP and from there Advocaat was appointed assistant to national-team coach Rinus Michels. His first assignment as head coach came with HFC Haarlem in 1987, then he landed a second division championship with FC Dordrecht, and by 1992 he was national coach. Three years later, Advocaat returned to club management with PSV Eindhoven, helping them to winners' medals in the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup before his move to Rangers.

UEFA information

Champions League final visual identity unveiled UEFA has unveiled its new visual identity for the 2009 UEFA Champions League final in Rome, a design which combines the trophy with the ancient Roman symbol of victory, a laurel wreath. The new identity reflects the city's history, architectural heritage and passion for football. The identity will appear in promotional material, tickets and web banners. It will also be supplied to all the official sponsors of the UEFA Champions League for use in publicity material and activities ahead of the final at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday 27 May. Produced by the -based graphic design and branding agency Radiant, its objective is to help promote the final and enhance the prestige of one of the world's biggest sporting events. Tickets for the final, the last to be held in midweek, will go on sale from 16 February. The match will be watched by a television audience of some 150 million people in more than 230 countries and territories. "It is about harmonising the symbols of victory of ancient times with those of today," said UEFA competitions director Giorgio Marchetti, "and what better setting for our modern trophy than Rome." Italian Football Federation vice-president Demetrio Albertini, who lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup three times with AC Milan, said: "Coming to the world's most beautiful city, we want to stage the most beautiful Champions League final so far. There is an embarrassment of riches in this city for travelling fans and we are prioritising security so that children and families will have no doubts about coming along to make up the crowd." Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno described next year's showpiece as more that just a sporting occasion. "This is a great honour for the city to host such an event," Alemanno said. "It is a social event and we want to show the world what this great city can do." Support for Respect Europe's top coaches and managers have spoken out in strong support of UEFA's Respect campaign, with Juventus boss stressing how "respect means everything" in today's game. UEFA's Respect campaign relates to the fight against social ills such as racism, violence, xenophobia and homophobia, allied to respect for the rules of the game, match officials, one's own club, the opposing club, team-mates, fellow footballers and supporters alike. "I think respect means everything, because respect also means accepting defeat and being able to appreciate your opponents' football if they played better," Ranieri said. "That's respect for me. Respect your neighbour as you would your own self – that comes first." Manchester United FC manager Sir Alex Ferguson also considers the sport to be going through a crucial period. "I think this is maybe a watershed for the game," he said. "There's been, over the years, an increase in attempts to manipulate the referee such as players crowding around the referees, and it can't do the referee's confidence any good – you're undermining his authority. The backing-off process and respect of decisions is a step we hope will improve the quality of referees and the game itself." Technical report issued UEFA has issued its report on the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League – a document designed to help technicians by identifying trends and supplying important data on events in last season's edition of the competition. The UEFA Champions League technical report offers talking points on key issues, analyses the present and lays the foundations for further enhancement of the club competition which is hailed by the critics as the best in the world. This season's report has again been given the valuable input of some of Europe's most respected coaching figures and, as usual, contains a wealth of important and interesting statistics. "In football, there is no time to rest on laurels, least of all in the UEFA Champions League," the report says. "The past, however, can be used as the basis for future improvement." Eat for Goals! book launched UEFA and the World Heart Federation have launched a cookery book with the support of the European Union, with 13 top players contributing to Eat for Goals! to underline that healthy food is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. Top stars such as Miroslav Klose, Steven Gerrard, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Birgit Prinz have contributed favourite recipes and dietary advice to the book, which it is hoped will encourage children to take care over what they eat. Eat for Goals! was created for children aged five to eleven, and has been published in English, French and German by Falkemedia. Copies can be ordered online at www.falkemedia-shop.de and €1 from each book sold will go to the World Heart Federation's programmes promoting an active lifestyle for children. "The world of football has long inspired people of any age and gender to exercise; it has now set out to inspire them to eat well too," said UEFA director of communications William Gaillard.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders Manchester United FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Six other teams have gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06) and RSC Anderlecht (2004/05) plus FC Spartak Moskva and (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage). Dynamo also conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2007/08, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06. Last updated: 25.10.2008

Team facts

FC BATE Borisov UEFA club competition milestones • BATE have steadily progressed since making their European debut in August 1999, going down 12-1 on aggregate to FC Lokomotiv Moskva in the UEFA Cup qualifying round. They made their debut in the UEFA Cup first round two years later, against AC Milan, and reached the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round the following season. UEFA Champions League milestones • The Belarussian side made their first appearance in UEFA Champions League qualifying in 1999/2000, winning through to the second qualifying round, and also featured in 2003 and 2007. Reaching the third qualifying round in the latter season was their most notable achievement until the start of the 2008/09 campaign, when Valur Reykjavík, RSC Anderlecht and PFC Levski Sofia were overcome as BATE became the first ever club from Belarus to reach the group stage. UEFA club competition honours • N/A Ten-year record 2007/08: UEFA Cup – first round (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2006/07: UEFA Cup – second qualifying round 2005/06: UEFA Cup – second qualifying round 2004/05: UEFA Cup – first qualifying round 2003/04: UEFA Champions League – first qualifying round 2002/03: UEFA Intertoto Cup – third round 2001/02: UEFA Cup – first round 2000/01: UEFA Champions League – second qualifying round 1999/00: UEFA Cup – qualifying round 1998/99: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2007/08 season Domestic record: BATE claimed a second successive Belarussian league title – and a fourth overall – with three games to spare of the 2007 season, eventually finishing 12 points clear of second-placed FC Gomel and FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk. Their hopes of a domestic double had already been dashed, however, as FC Dinamo Brest emerged as 4-3 penalty shoot-out victors after a goalless draw in the Belarus Cup final in May 2007. European record: Having overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit to defeat APOEL FC 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, BATE enjoyed a more comfortable success in the next stage against FH Hafnarfjördur, a 3-1 win in the first game in Iceland paving the way for a 4-2 overall success. A 2-2 home draw against FC Steaua Bucureşti in the third qualifying round raised hopes of progress into the group stage which were ended by a 2-0 reverse in Romania, and the subsequent UEFA Cup campaign proved short-lived, Villarreal CF running out 6-1 aggregate winners in the first round.
