Set to be released Aug. 24, the LP kicks off with an uplifting track titled “Kite,” premiering on Billboard today (May 31). Combining her poignant songwriting with her love of girl power, Silvas felt the best way to help listeners feel her personal strength was through a high-flying metaphor. “I wanted to capture a woman’s inability to be held down,” Silvas told Billboard of the inspiration for the “Kite” angle of the song. “That even without any real sense of direction of where she is going, she wants to be free to just go wherever the wind takes her. Her spirit can get her in trouble sometimes, but it’s what keeps her feeling alive.” “Kite” is both the lead single and opening song of the 12-song E.G.O., all of which Silvas co-penned. The album -- whose title is an acronym for Everybody Gets Off -- sees Silvas explore both her influences and her vulnerability while maintaining a soul-funk, country-tinged vibe, making for a diverse collection of thoughtful tunes. Though she decided to name the album after the title track that addresses the conceited tendencies of fame, Silvas felt quite liberated during the entire creation process of E.G.O., especially writing “Kite.” “I had the musical freedom to go where I wanted, and that’s what made me happy,” she asserts. “It felt nostalgic to relive my childhood influences in some of these songs, and it’s empowering to put my own spin on them.”” - Billboard, 5/31/18 Coming up... 8/6: ISLAND “The Day I Die,” Ziggy Marley “Circle Of Peace,” Joey Dosik “Don’t Want It To Be Over”... 8/13: Caroline Rose “Jeannie Becomes A Mom” Greta Van Fleet’s Pittsburgh show: “They Can Shred” “So, has anyone told Greta Van Fleet that they sorta kinda sound like some other band? Kidding. Yes, in fact, that’s all they hear, because, at this point in their young career, Greta Van Fleet is the Led Zep- pelin tribute band that writes its own songs. So far, there have been less than 10 of them released, but the radio play and the buzz was enough to sell out the 5,000-plus Stage AE Outdoors in one day, a big leap from their Pittsburgh debut in October at The Funhouse at Mr. Smalls to about a hundred people. We can all agree that GVF is not the most original-sounding band to come down the pike, but the quartet is demonstrating on this tour that there was some serious work being done at the classic-rock-friendly Kiszka household in Frankenmuth, Mich. With the oldest members singer Josh and twin brother and guitarist Jake just hitting drinking age, GVF is a retro blues-rock powerhouse. They didn’t just show up Wednesday night to recite the eight songs on their EP and then peace. They jammed out for 95 minutes, including a climactic, set-closing deep dive that went on for a big chunk of that. In the crowd, there were everything from kids to 60-year-old guys (without kids), many wearing Greta Van Fleet T-shirts, happy for a experience outside of the usual ZoSo, Jason Bonham or Get the Led Out. The band’s first display of confidence was taking the stage and just putzing around for a minute or two without launching right into a song. “I’d ask you how you’re doing, but I think it’s pretty evident,” Josh said, sensing the hyped atmosphere. Finally, Jake hit the Page riff Page never wrote with the snarling opening to “,” the radio track that fooled listeners into thinking it’s a new Zep song the way John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band had us thinking it was The Boss in ‘83 with “On the Dark Side.” Three things jumped out right away: The curly-haired Josh can totally wail like Plant live; Greta, with younger brother Sam on bass and Danny Wagner on drums, is a unit with four equally strong pieces (like you know who); and Jake, well, he might just be the young guitar god people have been waiting for. And he looks cool, too. His rhythm playing on “Highway Tune” was relentless and he ramped up the solo tenfold from the recorded version. One song later, on “Edge of Darkness,” he swung for the fences, unleashing a long, blistering solo recalling not only Page, but Hendrix and the Skynyrd boys. He did some of it behind his back, without muffing a note. Like John Paul Jones, but shirtless, Sam made his move to organ on “Flower Power,” one of the moodier blues songs in the vein of “Your Time is Gonna Come.” The newest entry was “When the Curtain Falls,” a punchy single from the forthcoming debut that comes with another kick-ass riff and screeching-cat vocal. Greta did insert one cover, and it wasn’t a Zep song. “Do we have any fans of the blues out in the audience tonight? Thank you for that,” Josh said, in what I could have sworn was a British accent, and with that they ripped through Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil” with the stage ablaze in red. All the best of ’em played slide as well, and so did Jake, who displayed those chops quite impressively on “Mountain of the Sun,” which had his brother singing, “Lady lay sweet sunshine/I’m gonna call you up, make you mine.” One of the slightly cringe-worthy things about his lyrical approach, we should note, is that his come-ons are mostly derived from ’70s re- cords. Who calls anyone but their mom “mama”? I didn’t time “Lover Leaver Taker Believer,” another unreleased song, but it was their “Dazed and Confused” blowout, running somewhere between 12 and 20 minutes and varying between utterly shapeless parts and really big, fiery ones. “There’s no ceiling, no second floor,” Josh noted during the encore. “I think we’re safe.” They narrowed it back down to radio-friendly for the final songs with the more signature one-two punch of “” and “,” climaxing in a drum solo before the coda. “That sounded like Jack White,” someone said, and, yeah, the whole thing wasn’t far removed from the fellow Michigan rocker’s own take on Zeppelin. Now, we wait to see what Greta Van Fleet can do with a full-length debut album, but in the meantime, they came, they con- quered and proved to 5,000 people, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they can shred.” - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 7/19/18 Rolling Stone spotlights Aaron Lee Tasjan for the “Heart Slows Down” premiere “On August 31st, Aaron Lee Tasjan will release Karma for Cheap, the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2016 album Silver Tears. Tasjan has already previewed a couple tunes from the record, and today he re- leased another, “Heart Slows Down.” “Heart Slows Down” is a gently psychedelic rocker with shades of Tom Petty’s melodicism, ’ off-kilter pop arrangements, and a healthy dose of Yardbirds-esque . In the chorus, Tasjan offers, “Honey if your heart slows down, I will always be around,” a message that stands in warm contrast to other lyrical images like “doctor’s drugs” and “bones rattl[ing] like a dropped tambourine.” Much of Karma for Cheap grapples with speaking up and reaching out, as heard in previously released songs like “If Not Now When.” In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Country, Tasjan said of the album, “I wanted to work really hard lyrically to create a record that wasn’t drawing lines in the sand from a humanitarian point of view. Trying to say something that’s more of a comfort, and to try and be a cheerleader to the people who are on the front lines of all this stuff.”” - Rolling Stone, 7/20/18 RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 7/25/2018
