KUER Supplemental Outreach Initiatives (June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020) FCC Menu Categories 1. Participation in at least four job fairs by station personnel who have substantial responsibility in making hiring decisions; 2. Hosting of at least one job fair; 3. Co-sponsoring of at least one job fair with organizations in the business and professional community whose membership includes substantial participation by women and minorities; 4. Participation in at least four events, including conventions, career days, workshops, and similar activities, sponsored by organizations representing groups present in the community interested in broadcast employment issues; 5. Establishment of an internship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment; 6. Participation in job banks, Internet programs, and other programs designed to promote outreach generally (i.e., outreach that is not primarily directed to providing notification of specific job vacancies); 7. Participation in scholarship programs designed to assist students interested in pursuing a career in broadcasting; 8. Establishment of training programs designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher level positions; 9. Establishment of a mentoring program for station personnel; 10. Participation in at least four events or programs sponsored by educational institutions relating to career opportunities in broadcasting; 11. Sponsorship of at least two events in the community designed to inform and educate members of the public about employment opportunities in broadcasting; 12. Listing of each upper-level category opening in a job bank or newsletter of media trade groups whose membership includes substantial participation by women and minorities; 13. Provision of assistance to unaffiliated non-profit entities in the maintenance of web sites that provide counseling on the process of searching for broadcast employment and/or other career development assistance pertinent to broadcasting; 14. Provision of training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and preventing discrimination; 15. Provision of training to personnel of unaffiliated non-profit organizations interested in broadcast employment opportunities that would enable them to better refer job candidates for broadcast positions; 16. Participation in other activities designed by the station reasonably calculated to further the goal of disseminating information as to employment opportunities in broadcasting to job candidates who might otherwise be unaware of such opportunities. Description of Activity, Including Date and Station Staff Involved: 1. Participation in at least four job fairs by station personnel who have substantial responsibility in making hiring decisions • KUER’s human resources analyst participated in the University of Utah Student Job Fair on August 21, 2019; the University of Utah Career and Professional Development Center Fair on September 6, 2019; the University of Utah Fall Career Fair on October 1, 2019; the Utah’s Hero’s Job Fair on October 30, 2019, the University of Utah Student Job Fair on February 4, 2020 and the University of Utah Spring Career Fair on February 6, 2020. She talked with students and fair visitors about available internships, volunteer opportunities and career opportunities in broadcasting as well as specific current openings at the station. 3. Co-sponsoring of at least one job fair with organizations in the business and professional community whose membership includes substantial participation by women and minorities • KUER participated in all activities to co-host a job fair in conjunction with the Utah Broadcasters Association including on-air announcements, web advertisements, sending flyers, etc. but the fair had to be cancelled a few days before the event due to COVID-19. 4. Participation in at least four events, including conventions, career days, workshops, and similar activities, sponsored by organizations representing groups present in the community interested in broadcast employment issues • A RadioWest producer participated in an event at a local bookseller where she shared broadcast content about the late writer Charles Bowden. They discussed the important role that public media plays in publicizing the works of authors and artists. 5. Establishment of an internship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment • KUER’s Marketing department employed one student intern during the Summer 2019 semester and two student interns during the Fall 2019, Spring 2020 and Summer 2020 school semesters. They assisted with community outreach projects and events, helped write and edit the weekly E-Newsletter delivered to 32,000 recipients and assisted with various marketing and community outreach processes. • The KUER News department employed one student intern during the Summer 2019 semester and two student interns during the Fall 2019, Spring 2020 and Summer 2020 school semesters. These internships provide the students with hands-on mentoring and on-the-job training in the News department. The students worked as reporters, produced stories for broadcast on KUER and helpd produce KUER’s signature two-hour broadcast program RadioWest. 4. Participation in job banks, Internet programs, and other programs designed to promote outreach generally (i.e., outreach that is not primarily directed to providing notification of specific job vacancies) • KUER co-sponsored free, documentary film screenings once a month on Wednesday evenings August 2019 through May 2020 at a downtown theater. RadioWest host Doug Fabrizio interviewed the film’s producers and directors afterward and fielded questions from the audience. • KUER community outreach staff, reporters and volunteers regularly represent KUER at community, education, and government events, often with booths, to promote KUER programs and services with participants. These events help promote the station’s resources. August 9 – 11, 2019, they sponsored a booth at the Craft Lake City arts festival downtown Salt Lake City. 4. Participation in scholarship programs designed to assist students interested in pursuing a career in broadcasting • KUER hosted a “Bob Avery Scholar” from the Department of Communications at the University of Utah during the summer of 2019. The scholar worked in the newsroom alongside reporters and created broadcast content and participated in events and community engagement. Establishment of training programs designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher level positions • KUER Administration supports staff participation in conferences where they develop additional skills, increase technical expertise, and gain a greater understanding of the industry. • The Public Radio Super Regional Meeting October 15 - 17, 2019 in New Orleans, LA was attended by the KUER General Manager • The Public Media Development and Marketing conference July 10 - 12, 2019 in Dallas, Texas was attended by the KUER marketing and membership managers • KUER News reporters participated in a day long training about reporting on native communities with the Native American Journalists Association on June 7, 2019 • KUER staff participated in a training with the director of communications for the Utah Courts on November 1, 2019 about processing public records requests Participation in at least four events or programs sponsored by educational institutions relating to career opportunities in broadcasting • KUER News producers showcased their digital documentary film “Dark Skies” at the Dixie State University DocUtah international documentary film festival in St. George, Utah. Afterward they participated in a Q & A about the equipment and techniques they used and career opportunities for documentary filmmakers. • KUER News producers showcased their digital documentary film “Sanctuary” at the Washington, D.C. Immigration Film Festival. Afterward they participated in a Q & A about the equipment and techniques they used and career opportunities for documentary filmmakers. • A KUER journalist participated in the University of Utah Pioneer Theater panel on Fake News. • A KUER producer was interviewed on PBS Utah Contact about her piece about a family living in a trailer because they can’t afford permanent housing Sponsorship of at least two events in the community designed to inform and educate members of the public about employment opportunities in broadcasting; • August 9 - 11, 2019 – KUER was a sponsor of the Craft Lake City DIY Festival downtown Salt Lake City. Staff and volunteers employed the “KUER Sound Recording Booth” where attendees young and old were given the opportunity to record a radio story just like a real reporter. Staff answered questions about their career paths in broadcasting and how to pursue opportunities in broadcasting at KUER and other stations. Listing of each upper-level category opening in a job bank or newsletter of media trade groups whose membership includes substantial participation by women and minorities; • The KUER News Managing Editor position was advertised with the CPB and Current Magazine. Provision of training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and preventing discrimination • The Diversity Training was held on 8/29/19 this year and was presented by Dori Nottingham. The training was on the topic of the impact of diversity and inclusion in their
