We here describe, in a cohort of > 170 in utero HIV-infected infants from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, fetal immune sex differences resulting in a 1.5–2-fold increased female susceptibility to intrauterine HIV infection. Viruses transmitted to females have lower replicative capacity (p = 0.0005) and are more type I interferon-resistant (p = 0.007) than those transmitted to males. Cord blood cells from females of HIV-uninfected sex-discordant twins are more activated (p = 0.01) and more susceptible to HIV infection in vitro (p = 0.03). Sex differences in outcome include superior maintenance of aviraemia among males (p = 0.007) that is not explained by differential antiretroviral therapy adherence.

  • Proposed Upgrade of the N2 Highway from the Lovu River to the Umlaas Canal, Ethekwini Metropolitan Municipality, Kwazulu-Natal
PROPOSED UPGRADE OF THE N2 HIGHWAY FROM THE LOVU RIVER TO THE UMLAAS CANAL, ETHEKWINI METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY, KWAZULU-NATAL Phase 1 Heritage Impact Assessment March 2017 Author: Jean Beater JLB Consulting Client: Marvin Grimett KSEMS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The South African Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) proposes to upgrade the N2 Highway from 2 to 4 lanes between Umlaas Canal and Lovu River. The project includes the upgrade of 4 interchanges and realignment of a portion of the N2. Other activities associated with the road upgrade are: the widening and lengthening of river bridges, construction of new bridges, upgrade of some major and minor culverts and axillary works which includes drainage and guardrails. The project also includes the widening of existing underpasses along the route. The road reserve will increase from 50m to 70m. The project is located within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. The distance between the Lovu River and Umlaas Canal is approximately 16km. The proposed upgrade therefore triggers section 38 of the National Heritage Resources Act (Act No. 25 of 1999) that lists developments that may require a heritage impact assessment (HIA). The proposed upgrade triggers sub-section (1) (a) of section 38 that refers to the construction of a road, wall, power line, pipeline, canal or other similar form of linear development or barrier exceeding 300m in length. The upgrade also triggers sub-section (1) (c) (ii) that refers to a development that involves three or more existing erven or subdivisions thereof. In addition, the proposed upgrade could impact on graves, protected structures, archaeological and palaeontological resources that are protected in terms of the KwaZulu-Natal Heritage Act (No.

  • Identification and Quantification of Volatile Organic Compounds in the Cape Town Brown Haze
Identification and quantification of volatile organic compounds in the Cape Town brown haze J. W. Burger1, J. J. Pienaar2, L. Fourie2 & J. H. L. Jordaan2 1Vaal University of Technology, Vanderbijlpark, South Africa 2Potchefstroom University for CHE, Potchefstroom, South Africa Abstract The formation of a brown haze due to urban pollution is a common phenomenon in many industrialised cities in the world. Cape Town in South Africa is renowned for its scenic beauty but this is marred by a brown haze layer that develops on certain days during inversion and windless conditions in the winter. In order to identify and quantify the temporal and spatial distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) which are a contributing factor to this phenomenon, TO Canisters and CarbotrapTM 300 tubes were used for this investigation. Samples were taken at six different sites in the Cape Metropolis area, at ground level and at 1000 and 1500 ft above sea level (ASL). In addition, 75 µm PDMS and Carboxen SPME fibres were also used. All samples collected were analysed by GC-MS and the different data sets were compared with each other. The daytime concentrations of the VOC’s appeared to be significantly higher than the night time concentrations. Open-chain hydrocarbons and benzene related compounds were generally found at ground level, while at higher levels of 1000 and 1500 ft above sea level, alcohols and ketone-compounds were detected. Keywords: brown haze, brown clouds, VOC, canisters, tubes, SPME, urban air, air pollution. 1 Introduction The formation of a brown haze due to urban pollution is a common phenomenon in may industrialised cities in the world.
