Last Match Vaqueros Play St. Edward’s to Draw in Exhibition Match Aug. 17, 2016 at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men’s soccer team opened up the preseason with a scoreless exhibition draw against the St. Edward’s University Hilltoppers, the No. 14 ranked team in NCAA Division II. Senior Leo Castillo and freshman Esa Alto each played one scoreless half to combine on the shutout for the Vaqueros. Kevin Lieb played the first 61 minutes Hilltoppers before William Tuffin completed the shutout. The Vaqueros outshot the Hilltoppers 11-to-9, including 2-to-1 on goal. Freshmen Juanito Ramirez and Angel Lopez led the Vaqueros with two shots each. Ramirez also had a shot on goal. Sophomore Brownsville Rivera alum Isidro Martinez had the Vaqueros’ other shot on goal. Julian Sanchez attempted the lone shot on goal for the Hilltoppers.

Previous Matches Vaqueros Close Out Season with Loss to Houston Baptist Nov. 8, 2015 at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men’s soccer team closed out the season with a 2-1 loss the Houston Baptist University Huskies. It was the Vaqueros’ (5-12-1, 2-8-0 WAC) program record 11th one-goal match of the season. The Vaqueros got their lone goal in the 62nd minute, when senior Archie Massen, playing in the final match of his career, took a shot from the top-right corner of the box for his second goal of the season. Junior Hanna alum Carlos Acevedo recorded his fourth assist while junior Rico Laitinen had his second on the play. George Kelley put the Huskies (9-8-1, 5-4-1 WAC) on the board in the 10th minute with a shot from the right side of the box off a cross from Dominick Faletto. Thilo Borgmann also assisted on the play. That was it until the 56th minute, when Kelley sent a cross to Borgmann at the upper right-hand corner of the box. Junior goalkeeper Leo Castillo (4-11-1, 2-7-0 WAC) came out of the net to contest the shot and Borgmann shot it past him into the left corner to make it 2-0. Castillo finished with two saves. Chance Pope (8-3-1, 5-2-1 WAC) made two saves for the Huskies. The Huskies outshot the Vaqueros 13-8, including 4-3 on goal.

Vaqueros Pick Up Win Over CSU Bakersfield Nov. 1, 2015 at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men’s soccer team beat the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 3-0. It was the second time the Vaqueros (5-11-1, 2-7-0 WAC) have scored three goals in a match this season after previously beating Huston-Tillotson 3-0 on Aug. 28. Junior Hanna alum Juanito Garcia scored the game-winning goal in the 39th minute when he picked up a loose ball in the box and shot it in to the right side of the goal. It was Garcia’s team-leading third goal of the season. That was it until the final seven minutes of play, when sophomore Olli Tynkkynen scored on a penalty kick for his second goal, and redshirt freshman Raul Fierro forced a ball into the net for his first-career goal off an assist by senior Archie Massen. Roadrunners (7-5-4, 4-3-2 WAC) goalkeeper Oscar Gloveus (2-1-1, 1-1-1 WAC) made seven saves. Junior goalkeeper Leo Castillo (4-11-1, 2-7-0 WAC) played the first half for the Vaqueros before redshirt sophomore Mission-native Jorge Medina made two saves in the second half to complete the shutout. The Vaqueros outshot the Roadrunners 13-10, including 10-2 on goal.
