Last Match UTRGV Drops Friendly to St. Edward’s Aug. 20, 2017 at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team fell to St. Edward’s, the No. 9 ranked team in Division II, 2-0 in an exhibition match. Ruben Gonzalez scored the game-winner in the 34th minute when he put home the rebound of his initial shot. Then in the 64th minute Grant Mobley scored off his own rebound to complete the scoring. Sophomore Andy Rios made one save in 45 minutes before sophomore Esa Aalto made six saves in the second half. St. Edward’s goalkeeper William Tuffin made two saves for the shutout. St. Edward’s outshot UTRGV 18-5, including 10-2 on net.

Previous Matches UTRGV Drops WAC Tournament Quarterfinals Match to UNLV Nov. 10, 2016 at Clyde Field – The fifth-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team fell to fourth-seeded UNLV 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Quarterfinals. After Timo Mehlich gave UNLV (8-11-1) a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, UTRGV (6-9-3) quickly responded, as, in the 17th minute, freshman Juanito Ramirez fed senior Hanna alum Juanito Garcia, who took the ball up the right side of the box before sending a cross to freshman Damian Roszczky, who sent a bouncer into the back of the net. Two minutes later, UTRGV took the lead when sophomore Brownsville Rivera alum Isidro Martinez fired the ball past a defender and into the goal from 28 yards out. UNLV tied the match in the 38th minute when Oscar Velazquez scored off a cross by Danny Musovski and then regained the lead a minute and a half later when Mehlich took a shot from the top of the box that was deflected into the goal. Freshman Esa Aalto (5-5-2) made four saves for UTRGV while Enrique Adame (5-5-0) made one save for UNLV.

UTRGV Clinches First WAC Tournament Berth Nov. 5, 2016 at Spartan Soccer Field – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team clinched its first-ever berth in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament with a 2-1 victory over San José State University (SJSU). SJSU (4-13-2, 3-6-1 WAC) took a 1-0 lead on a Carlos Valdovinos goal at 62:18, but 59 seconds later, freshman Ilias Kosmidis scored on a bicycle kick to tie the match. It was hit second goal of the season. Freshman Damian Roszczyk got his third assist on the play. UTRGV (6-8-3, 4-4-2 WAC) got the game-winner in the 85th minute when senior Sami Tiittanen sent a long ball ahead to sophomore Isaiah Hinds, who broke past the SJSU defense to score his first goal of the season. Freshman Esa Aalto (5-4-2) made a career-high tying seven saves, including five in the second half. Nedin Tucakovic (4-13-2) made one save for SJSU.
