Event: 2003/4 Scholarship Program

Date: September 2003 – April 2004

Awarded 3 scholarships to James Madison University students involved with our student-station WXJM. These students will gain hands-on practical experience in broadcast management through their participation in the WXJM management team, and will be mentored by full-time professional staff.

JMU also provides unpaid opportunities in , production, promotion, sales and management to approximately 100 students per year at WXJM.

Event: Workshop on Hiring Procedures

Date: Mar. 24, 2004, 2:30-4:00 pm

Organizer: JMU (Licensee). Conducted by Academic Affairs legal counsel Susan Wheeler and JMU Human Resources representative Keri Sue Brunk

Discussion of proper procedures for obtaining permission to speak with references and conducting reference interviews; proper procedures for making an offer of employment, and review if affirmative action and equal opportunity policies.

Event: JMU Career Fair

Spoke with several dozen students about internship opportunities at WMRA, NPR and other public radio stations. Distributed written descriptions of NPR internships and contact information for WMRA. NPR and other stations. Obtained intern for Fall 2004 semester.

Event: MACRoCk Mid-Atlantic College Radio Conference

Date: April 2-3, 2004

Organizer: JMU (Licensee), WXJM

Staff: Tom DuVal, General Manager of WMRA, WXJM management team and volunteers

Thousands of students from up and down the East Coast attended this annual college radio event hosted by WXJM. This unique event featured a multitude of musicians, informal networking, and included workshops addressing the needs of broadcasters participating in fledgling indie-rock format. Industry representatives were on hand at a “label expo”. This year’s panel discussions included “Radio Consolidation” and information on LPFM. MACRock has become a valuable training program for radio station Music Directors and Event Promoters within this genre.

Event: 2003/4 Internship Program

Date: September 2003- April 2004

Established an internship position in our programming department in conjunction with the Music Industry program of the College of Arts and Letters of James Madison University. JMU practicum credit was awarded to the two students participating in the program, 1 each semester. Note that the Fall semester Intern was subsequently hired as a part-time announcer by WMRA.
