Uniconflicts 113 09 The conflicting transformations of the city in the photographs of contemporary Moroccan artist Yto Barrada Chourouq Nasri University Mohammed 1, Oujda, Morocco e-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION Yto Barrada is a contemporary female Moroccan artist who uses photography to criticize the government policies concerning the city and its inhabitants. Her focus is on her hometown, Tangier, which she transforms into a series of pictures and forces us to perceive in a new way. In her photographs, Tangier is illustrated as a closed city, full of boundaries and walls. Its massive concrete buildings are similar and faceless; its new architecture is soulless and its urban development projects do not take into consideration the real needs of the community. In this chapter, I explore the way Barrada reflects on public space and the city in her photographs. Barrada’s work also includes films, publications, installations and sculptures, but my focus in this paper is on her photographs. Yto Barrada works with pictures and I work with words to engage in a debate concerned with urbanism and the city in Morocco. 114 Moroccan artist Yto Barrada There has always been a close link between art and architec- ture, especially in the early part of the twentieth century. City photography goes back to the beginning of the last century with photographers such as Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott and Eugène Atget. In Cities and Photography, Jane Tormey explains how “photographic representations translate the city for us and con- tribute to how we conceive it, as they visualize changing attitudes to the world and ourselves” (xiv). -

SECULARISM NARRATIVES AND ARAB AMERICAN FICTION A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Danielle Aberle Haque May 2014 © 2014 Danielle Aberle Haque SECULARISM NARRATIVES AND ARAB AMERICAN FICTION Danielle Haque, PhD Cornell University 2014 “Secularism Narratives and Arab American Fiction” focuses on contemporary fiction’s challenge to the liberal political construction of minority religious practices and community life as incompatible with modernity, progress, and secularism. U.S. secularism is not simply the absence of religion from the public sphere, but is underwritten by a particularly U.S. Protestant conception of religion that has historically shaped assumptions about what it means to be both religious and secular in the United States. Looking to Mohja Kahf, Rabih Alameddine, Ninar Esber, Mouir Fatmi, and Hasan Elahi, I explore immigrant narratives that work outside religious/secular binaries; rather than operating unequivocally within the terms of religious categorizations, contemporary writers often recast those terms and respond to the secularism narrative by scrambling the terms of the religious/secular binary through lived, embodied religious experience. These works dispute the dominant United States narrative of secularism and its claim to be universal and progressive; rather, they reveal how prohibitory secularism enforces an exclusionary citizenry through racialized immigration policies, Islamaphobic political rhetoric and popular culture, and the promotion of specific economic forms and ideologies worldwide. I argue that secularism is entangled with global ideologies of human rights, but also with the particularly United States legal discourses of privacy and property. -

Marks Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada Abstract Calligraphic animation shifts the locus of documentation from representation to performance, from index to moving trace. Animation is an ideal playing field for the transformative and performative qualities that Arabic writing, especially in the context of Islamic art, has explored for centuries. In Islamic traditions, writing sometimes appears as a document or a manifestation of the invisible. Philosophical and theological implications of text and writing in various Islamic traditions, including mystic sciences of letters, the concept of latency associated with Shi‘a thought, and the performative or talismanic quality of writing, come to inform contemporary artworks. A historical detour shows that Arabic animation arose not directly from Islamic art but from Western-style art education and the privileging of text in Western modern art – which itself was inspired by Islamic art. A number of artists from the Muslim and Arab world, such as Mounir Fatmi (Morocco/France), Kutlug Ataman (Turkey), and Paula Abood (Australia) bring writing across the boundary from religious to secular conceptions of the invisible. Moreover, the rich Arabic and Islamic tradition of text-based art is relevant for all who practice and study text-based animation. Janice Mason Art Museum LESSON PLANS FOR WIER EXHIBIT Background Information ARTIST NAME : Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid ART PIECE(S) ON DISPLAY: “Head of Worker-Bergen Point Brass Foundry” About the Artist Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid were both born in Moscow in 1945; Komar, on September 11 and Melamid, on July 14. Both artists attended the Moscow Art School from 1958 to 1960, and the Stroganov Institute of Art and Design, Moscow from 1962 to 1967. They began their collaborative art work in 1965, and two years later they began the SOTS Art movement (the Soviet version of Western Pop Art). They were mavericks from the very beginning. They joined the dissident underground and showed their works in unsanctioned exhibitions. The youth section of the Moscow Union of Artists expelled them in 1974, and they also lost their membership in the Graphic Artists’ Organization. Their first international exhibition was in New York in 1976. However, their careers took one risky turn after another, and in 1977 they managed to escape the Soviet Union and settled in the United States the following year. They both became American citizens a decade later. In addition to having numerous public commissions and exhibitions after arriving in the United States, they were the first Russian artists to receive a National Endowment for the Arts in 1981. Between 1995 –97, Komar and Melamid , with sponsor Chase Manhattan Bank, launched an innovative internet art project. They conducted an extensive survey in more than a dozen countries to determine the characteristics of art that those surveyed most liked and most disliked. -

Here's where the core players have been since then and where they are now: Cy Acosta, pitcher. The reliever spent three of his four major league seasons in a White Sox uniform. In 1973, his 18 saves ranked fifth in the league. The same year he became the first American League pitcher to bat in the designated hitter era. The 65- year-old resides in Mexico. Dick Allen, first base. He was the runaway winner in the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player vote, as he had career-highs in RBI (113), bases on balls (99) and on-base percentage (.420). The career .292 hitter played for five teams in15 seasons, after which he served as an advisor and instructor for several years. Now 70 years old, he resides in western Pennsylvania. Luis Alvarado, shortstop. In 1972, the Puerto Rican utilityman took part in a career-high 102 games. Two years earlier, the former International League Most Valuable Player was acquired in the trade that sent shortstop Luis Aparicio to the Boston Red Sox. Died at age 52 on March 20, 2001. Mike Andrews, second base. Also a part of the Aparicio trade, he started 143 games in the 1972 season, his last as an everyday player. One year later, he became the first DH in franchise history. -

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets. -

Selfness and the emergence of self states as illustrated in conceptual art January 1st, 2009 | Add a Comment Journal of Analytical Psychology, 2009, 54, 619–635 Michael Horne, Seattle, USA Abstract: The traditional view of the self is that of a singular entity whose ground is an inherent function of the mind. The more recent conception of the self is moving toward the social constructionist concept that its ground is the discourses of the particular culture into which one is born. These two divergent views have created an irresolvable binary of inner/outer that limits their explanatory power. To resolve this dilemma I suggest that the abstract noun ‘selfness’, indicating a general state, should replace the representational noun ‘self’, that indicates a specific state. I will propose that ‘selfness’ is indeed the ‘ground’ from which our unique self states emerge. I will illustrate this with examples from conceptual art and will discuss its relevance to analytic theory and treatment. Abstract [conceptual] art is always a symbolic game, and it is akin to all human games; you have to get into it, risk and all, and this takes a certain act of faith. But what kind of faith? Not faith in absolutes, not a religious kind of faith. A faith in possibility, a faith not that we will know something finally, but a faith in not knowing, a faith in our ignorance, a faith in our being confounded and dumbfounded, a faith fertile with possible meaning and growth. Varnedoe is suggesting that conceptual art is something risky, something that one plays with rather than observes from afar. -
