LaGrange Daily News Weekend, April 24-25, 2010 www.lagrangenews.com Living A long-awaited look upstairs Hills and Dales reopens with celebration ceremony April 28 By Andrea Lovejoy Contributing editor

“Can we go upstairs?” It’s a question that’s been asked, time and again, almost every day since the his- toric Fuller Callaway family home at 1916 Hills & Dales Drive, opened for tours in 2004. Guides grew accustomed to the disap- pointed looks of visitors eager to see what was at the top of the grand staircase, a tantalizing expanse of gleaming birch leading to the home’s bedrooms and pri- vate living areas. “Can we go upstairs?” Next week, for the first time, the answer will be “Yes!” The second and third floors of the clas- sic 1916 home designed by renowned architect Neel Reid for Fuller E. Callaway Sr. and his wife, Ida Cason Callaway, will be unveiled at a –“reopening celebration” on April 28, which was Fuller and Ida Callaway’s wedding anniversary. But before the first visitor ascends the double staircase, nearly a full year of his- torically sensitive refurbishment and painstaking restoration has been con- ducted, taking the residence both back in time and into the future.
