  • Representations of Education in HBO's the Wire, Season 4
Teacher EducationJames Quarterly, Trier Spring 2010 Representations of Education in HBO’s The Wire, Season 4 By James Trier The Wire is a crime drama that aired for five seasons on the Home Box Of- fice (HBO) cable channel from 2002-2008. The entire series is set in Baltimore, Maryland, and as Kinder (2008) points out, “Each season The Wire shifts focus to a different segment of society: the drug wars, the docks, city politics, education, and the media” (p. 52). The series explores, in Lanahan’s (2008) words, an increasingly brutal and coarse society through the prism of Baltimore, whose postindustrial capitalism has decimated the working-class wage and sharply divided the haves and have-nots. The city’s bloated bureaucracies sustain the inequality. The absence of a decent public-school education or meaningful political reform leaves an unskilled underclass trapped between a rampant illegal drug economy and a vicious “war on drugs.” (p. 24) My main purpose in this article is to introduce season four of The Wire—the “education” season—to readers who have either never seen any of the series, or who have seen some of it but James Trier is an not season four. Specifically, I will attempt to show associate professor in the that season four holds great pedagogical potential for School of Education at academics in education.1 First, though, I will present the University of North examples of the critical acclaim that The Wire received Carolina at Chapel throughout its run, and I will introduce the backgrounds Hill, Chapel Hill, North of the creators and main writers of the series, David Carolina.

  • 2021-2022 TENTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON the Outer Edge of Yout!
MATTHEW ROBERTSON ARTISTIC DIRECTOR 2021-2022 TENTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON the outer edge of yout! IN PERSON AND LIVESTREAMED SUBSCRIPTIONS @ THETHIRTEENCHOIR.ORG 2021-2022 SEASON the outer edge of yout! As The Thirteen approaches our 10th anniversary season I’ve been thinking about the passage of time, how it changes each of us, and what that means to me and The Thirteen. First and foremost, this year is one of celebration: not only is The Thirteen thriving as we approach our 10th anniversary, this milestone coincides with some measure of relief from the health and human ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic. While I look forward to marking these triumphs, for me this year serves as a rededication to the sentiments of youth: childlike sincerity, wide-eyed wonder, and open-hearted care. These sentiments seem more meaningful when they are conscious choices rather than simply a reflection of innocence. Our season embodies this spirit. We will end our season with the world premiere performances of Scott Ordway’s The Outer Edge of Youth, a visionary new choral opera that looks at the innocence of childhood and the beauty of the natural world (and from which I borrowed the title for our season). Another highlight of this year will be a fully staged theatrical performance of Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. Staged by my friend and collaborator Timothy Nelson, hailed as “The Future of Opera” by The New York Times, and joined by the University of Maryland’s Chamber Singers, this performance seeks to embrace joy, connection, and our shared humanity. In each of our concerts this year – from Monteverdi to Vaughan Williams to the Christmas story - I am above all searching for connection: to touch and excite each and every one of you.

  • 1 Mentor Text: “Thirteen and a Half” by Rachel Vail
MENTOR TEXT: “THIRTEEN AND A HALF” BY RaCHEL VAIL 1 All I knew about Ashley before I went over there yesterday was that until this year she went to private school and now she sits next to me in math. But she asked me over and since I couldn’t think of a good no, I said OK. Ashley lives near school, so we walked. We didn’t have a lot to talk about on the way, but she didn’t seem to mind. She was telling me that when she grows up she wants to be a veterinar- ian and a movie star, and travel all over the world very glamorously and live life to the hilt. She asked if I like to live life to the hilt. “I mostly just hang around,” I admitted. “But when you get older, and you can do anything,” she whispered, as we began climbing the steep steps up to her huge stone house. “What do you like to imagine?” I was a little winded from the steps, so I just shrugged. “Like, I am constantly imagining I can fly,” said Ashley, spreading her arms wide. “Do you ever imagine you’re flying?” I stopped for breath. “I sometimes imagine I’m in a bakery.” “Today is my half-birthday,” she said, pulling a key out of her shirt. It had been hanging from a shoelace around her neck. She bent close to the lock, to use it. “Are you thirteen and a half yet?” I shook my head. My birthday was just last month.

Introduction Game theory applied to political situations offers a unique approach to analyzing and understanding international relations. Yet the rigid structure that lends itself so well to mathematics is not practical in the real world . It lacks a built in mechanism for determining a player's preferences, which is a key part of an international "game" or situation. Strategic culture, another international relations theory, is quite the opposite. Critics claim it suffers from a lack of structure, but it captures the spirit of international actors and what makes them tick. This paper explores the idea of pairing the two otherwise unrelated theories to bolster both in the areas where they are lacking in order to provide a more complete understanding of international states' behavior and motivations. Brief Summary of Major Theories The theories presented in the following pages are drawn from distinct schools of thought; consequently it is necessary to provide some background information.

  • The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Hungry Mind Lab 2016 Materials for imQ Project The Cuban Missile Crisis The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over Soviet ballistic missiles deployed in Cuba that took place between October 16 and October 28 in 1962. Information about the Cuban Missile Crisis was broadcast on television worldwide, and it was the one event in history that brought the Cold War closest to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. Following from the enmity between the United States and the Soviet Union since the end of World War II in 1945, the United States was concerned about the rise of Communism, and a Latin American country allying openly with the USSR, short for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, was unacceptable. In addition, the United States had recently suffered a public embarrassment, because of the failed invasion at the Bay of Pigs in April 1961 under President John F. Kennedy. The invasion had been attempted by a group known as Brigade 2506 that consisted of 1400 paramilitaries, who had been trained and funded by the United States government's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Launched from Guatemala on 17 April 1961, the Brigade 2506 had intended to land at the Bay of Pigs and to overthrow Cuba's increasingly communist government but it was defeated within three days by the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, who were under the direct command of Cuba's Prime Minister Fidel Castro. After the events at the Bay of Pigs, the former American President Eisenhower told Kennedy that now the Soviets were "embolden to do something that they would otherwise not do." Indeed, the failed invasion created the impression with Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev and his advisers that Kennedy was indecisive and, as one Soviet adviser wrote about Kennedy: "too young, intellectual, not prepared well for decision making in crisis situations ..
