March 2020 will forever be known as the month everything changed. I’ll never forget March 11. Kris' I remember seeing breaking news that the National Basketball Association (NBA) was suspending the rest of the season due to a player testing positive for COVID-19. That same night, actor Tom Hanks an- ELDERS o nounced that he and his wife had tested positive. The following day, a researcher at Penn State conducted a r survey of 682 people about their attitudes and behaviors toward COVID-19. While 90% of people had heard John Culp, Chairman about Hanks’ diagnosis, nearly 50% of those surveyed reported it “changed their attitudes and behaviors”. Joel Faidley n For many Americans, including myself, this was the moment we recognized that our way of living could be in David Hacker big trouble. Let’s take some time to revisit the unfortunate events that began in March, just one year ago. Dennis Holbrook e On March 15, we held in-person worship at Central. Our attendance was 100 people lower than the previ- Bill Parker r ous week. That afternoon, our church leadership met to discuss how we should respond. After much prayer Eric Reecher and deliberation, we decided to suspend all in-person services effective immediately. The next day, Bristol Rick Tallman Tennessee City Schools announced they would be closed through at least March 27. Unfortunately, students never returned to school to finish their semester in-person. For the next ten Sundays, which included Easter, we held wor- ship services online-only. As we approached May, federal and state government officials outlined a plan for busi- TRUSTEES nesses, schools, and churches to begin reopening safely. With these protocols in place, we re-opened for in-person worship on May 31. Just eight weeks later, our COVID-19 Response Team recommended that we return to online- Dirk Crandell only services due to a rise in cases in the county. As of July 26, we were back to online-only services. Pat Hull Bobby Moser We decided to follow our local school system closely during this period as they were in daily conversation with our Bob Parker county health department. Students returned to school in a hybrid capacity on August 24. With continued guidance from medical professionals, we resumed in-person worship once again on September 27. As you know, we have been meeting in-person with strict social distancing ever DEACONS since. The last calendar year has certainly been challenging. However, we are so thankful for the input of our medical professionals in helping us lead Central through such a difficult time. While 2019 - 2021 COVID-19 isn’t over and done with, we are hopeful that a return to normal is in sight over the Harold Campbell next several months.
