Hurley Marty Minton Thomas Schreiner 2 FALL 2004 Heimbach (author of the newly released True Sexual Morality: Recovering Biblical Standards for a Culture in Crisis) confirms one of the areas that even we in the church are most susceptible to is in the lure of seeing sexuality as a form of therapy. His warnings here are wise, and his appeal is consistently to see and engage in sexual experience only in accord with the good and wise design of our Creator. Jim Hamilton provides a rich and insightful sermon in this issue on 1 Cor 11:2-12, and we gratefully continue our “Celebrating Biblical Womanhood” column with Nancy Leigh DeMossʼs helpful analysis of true beauty. As in the past several issues, we offer again here one sustained book review and then our annotated bibliography on key books on gender matters published in the year 2003. We hope readers will be made better aware of both some of the wonderful gains made and deep concerns before us in resources that come from our publishing houses. As always, we hope and pray that God will be pleased to used this journal for the edification and strengthening of his people, whether by warning them away from dangerous paths or by calling them more zealously to continue on the faithful path, the path of life itself. Womanhood If Biblical “I HATE PAUL!” I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that from my students, mostly young women scarred by how Paul has been used against them as they have been told to be silent (1 Corinthians 14), to submit to their husbands (Ephesians 5), not to teach or exercise authority over men (1 Timothy 2), and to be workers at home (Titus 2). They have been taught that God designed women to follow male headship (1 Corinthians 11), focusing on family and home (Colossians 3; 1 Peter 3), and that occupations other than family should be secondary for women, mostly undertaken out of necessity or after their children have left the house. A few years ago, a student came to my office ostensibly to discuss her class paper, but it soon became clear that what she really wanted to discuss was her vocation. She asked me: Did God call you to be a professor as well as a mom and a pastor’s wife? Was it hard? Did you feel guilty about working outside the home? Was your husband sup- portive? What did people in your church think? She shared her frustrations as a career-minded Christian woman from a conservative background who was trying to reconcile church and family expectations with her vocational calling.

April 1, 2016 CHRISTIAN PATRIARCHY AND THE LIBERATION OF EVE Jennifer Emily Sims, B.A. MALS Mentor: Theresa Sanders, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Christian Patriarchy is a set of beliefs held by many conservative Christians that outlines gender roles based on a literal interpretation of scripture. These gender roles, also referred to as biblical manhood and biblical womanhood, dictate the hierarchy of authority where Christ is the head of the household, the husband is the head of the wife. Children are primed at a very young age to demonstrate the tenets of biblical manhood and biblical womanhood, but for young girls, their paths are strictly laid out for them to marry, birth many Godly children, and serve their husbands. The fundamentalist reading of Genesis 2-3 is used to justify female submission via Eve’s creation and subsequent role in the Fall of Humanity. This evangelical interpretation uses Genesis 2-3 as the foundational text to first justify women as subordinate based on creation order, and secondly justify women’s submission on Eve’s role in the Fall of Humanity. By using biblical interpretations to subordinate the woman’s position vis-à-vis her husband, women in these conservative Christian homes are locked into this role with little chance to follow a different path, and are often dependent on a dominant male figure for survival.

VanGemeren Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, USA Introduction: The Occasion for this Paper A recent publication on Christocentricity2 led me to reflect some more on John Calvin’s approach to messianic prophecies. Several faculty members of Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia), representing the classical theological areas (OT, NT, and ST), have outlined definitive hermeneutics that defines the Westminster approach to biblical interpretation, biblical theology, and systematic theology. Both the Board and Faculty are now unanimous as to the implications of Westminster’s historic mission, as President Lillback writes, “The seminary today continues to believe that the hermeneutical method identified in the Reformation tradition of Westminster is biblically sound and in fact essential for a high view of Scripture in an age of doubt, controversy, and compromise.” (6) Permit me to enter briefly into the fray of my alma mater. I matriculated at Westminster nearly fifty years ago. It was a critical time in her history, because the theologian, John Murray, had recently retired (1966) and the Old Testament scholar, Edward J. Young, had passed away (1968). Of the founding fathers, Cornelius Van Til (1895-1987) was still teaching apologetics. It was also a joy to be introduced to biblical theology by Edmund Clowney, Meredith G. Kline, and Richard Gaffin. 1.
