EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The is a 3.5-mile National Recreational Trail that runs along the peninsula from Memorial Boulevard near the western end of Easton’s Beach, to Bailey’s Beach in the National Historic District of Newport, Rhode Island. The Cliff Walk is a significant tourist attraction that brings people of all ages to Newport from around the globe to enjoy the scenery, the history, the shoreline, and ocean activities.

The signs along the Cliff Walk are important indicators of rules, history, safety, and more. This report details each sign along the Newport Cliff Walk with both photos and descriptions. Clean Ocean Access volunteers, Linda and Don Hammer, walked along the Cliff Walk documenting every sign with notes and photographs. There are 12 types of signs along the Cliff Walk: (1) Restrooms, (2) Parking and Transit Advisory, (3) Dog Care, (4) Miscellaneous Private Sign, (5) Plaques, (6) Public Access, (7) Emergency Response Numbers, (8) Private Property, (9) QR Codes, (10) Rules and Safety Regulations, (11) Location Information, and (12) Kiosks. The Rules and Regulation and Location Information signs are the most prevalent, both with 31 signs along the Cliff Walk.

The pictures and data collected were used to make an interactive map and analyze the different signs along the Cliff Walk and where these signs are located. The Cliff Walk was broken into three sections for this report: Bailey’s Beach to Ledge Road (0.42 miles), Ledge Road to Marine Avenue, and Marine Avenue to Memorial Boulevard (1.6 miles). In total, there are 161 signs along the Cliff Walk with most of the signs found along the third section from Marine Avenue to Memorial Boulevard and the least number of signs occurring along the first section from Bailey’s Beach to Ledge Road. Not all 12 types of signs are found in each section of the Cliff Walk.

This report analyzes the types of signs, number of signs, and location of signs along the Cliff

Walk.

THE CLIFF WALK

The Cliff Walk is a 3.5-mile National Recreation Trail along Newport’s eastern shore that attracts locals and tourists alike. The path is located along the coastline behind many of Newport’s historic mansions and provides multiple public points of access to the shoreline for people to enjoy ocean activities. There are 161 signs on the Cliff Walk that are described in the following pages.

TYPES OF SIGNS

The 12 types of signs are as follows:

1. Restrooms  Signs that point to, advertise, or talk about a restroom nearby. 2. Parking and Transit Advisory  Signs that have parking directions, bus information, or parking meter information. 3. Dog Care  Signs that pertain to dogs, including dog poop bag dispensers. 4. Miscellaneous  Signs that are a privately owned (in this case an advertisement). 5. Plaques  Metal signs attached to rock or rock walls that display commemorative information. 6. Public Access/ Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC)/ Department of Environmental Management (DEM)  Signs put up by the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC), The Department of Fish and Wildlife (DEM), or some affiliated body that pertain to environmental laws or public shoreline access points (these are points where there is legal and public water access). 7. Emergency Response Numbers  These numbers are white and generally on the ground. They are there for emergencies, so response professionals can locate the person in need of assistance. 8. Private Property/ No Trespass  Signs that say “Private Property” or “No Trespass” that indicate privately owned land. 9. QR Signs  These signs are on little posts that have points of interest and a QR code, which can be scanned with a phone to see information about the points of interest. These were put in by the Cliff Walk Commission. 10. Rules and Safety Suggestions  Signs that have rules on what can and cannot be done in certain places, or that have safety cautionary suggestions. 11. Location Information  Signs that have information about location, such as street signs. 12. Kiosks  Slanted table-like signs that have maps on them with points of interest, rules, and transit information on them.

There are 12 different signs found along the Cliff Walk. Figure 1.0 represents the types of signs, the percentage of each sign, and the amount of each type of sign along the Cliff Walk. Of the 12 types of signs along the Cliff Walk, 19% are Rules and Safety (31 signs), 19% are Location Information (31 signs), 15% are Emergency Response Numbers (24 signs), 12% are Private Property/No Trespass (20 signs), 9% are QR Signs (14 signs), 9% are Public Access (14 signs), 6% are Parking and Transit Advisory (10 signs), 3% are Kiosks (5 signs), 3% are Plaques (4 signs), 2% are Restrooms (3 signs), 2% are Dog Care (3 signs), and 1% are Miscellaneous (2 signs). The following chart details the amount of each type of sign found along the Cliff Walk.

SECTIONS OF THE CLIFF WALK

For this report, the Cliff Walk was split into three different sections. The first section is from Bailey’s Beach to Ledge Road and contains 16% of the signs along the Cliff Walk. The second section is from Marine Avenue to Ledge Road and contains 27% of the signs. The third section of the Cliff Walk is from Memorial Boulevard to Marine Avenue and contains 57% of the signs along the Cliff Walk. The chart below illustrates the number of signs found along each section of the Cliff Walk.

SECTION 1: BAILEYS BEACH TO LEDGE ROAD

The first section of the Cliff Walk from Bailey’s Beach to Ledge Road is the shortest section at 0.42 miles long and contains the least number of signs with 26 signs along it. This section of the Cliff Walk surrounds residential property, Land’s End Mansion, and the “Boat House Gully”.

TYPES OF SIGNS – SECTION 1: BAILEYS BEACH TO LEDGE ROAD

There are 6 sign types in this section: Emergency Response Numbers, Private Property/ No Trespass, QR sign, Location Information, Rules and Safety Suggestions, and Kiosk. There are 13 Location Information signs, which is 50% of the signs in this section. Private Property/No Trespass signs are the next most common along this section, with 7 signs that make up 27%. The third most common sign type is Rules and Safety Suggestions, with 3 signs that make up 11% of this section. There is one sign in this section for each of the remaining sign types: Kiosk, Painted Numbers on the Ground, and QR signs that each make up 4% of this section’s total signs.

This sign is a kiosk that has a map of the entire Cliff Walk. It includes areas of interest and bathrooms along with road names on the map. There is also an overview of the Cliff walk and its rules along the top of the kiosk.

The Section of the Cliff Walk from Marine Avenue to Ledge Road is 1.45 miles long and has 32 signs along it. There is an average of 22.1 signs per mile. The path passes several places of note: The Museum, Sheep Point cove, Mansion, and Mansion.

SECTION 3: MEMORIAL BOULEVARD TO MARINE AVENUE

The section of the Cliff Walk from Marine Avenue to Memorial Boulevard is 1.6 miles long and has 91 signs. There is an average of 56.9 signs per mile. This part of the Cliff Walk passes Marine Avenue beach, Ochre Point, mansion, buildings including McAuley Hall and , Forty Steps, Cliff Walk Cottage on the Sea, Mary’s Seat, and The Chanler at Cliff Walk.
