If you are in employment you should think yourself lucky, not only because you’ve got a job but also because you don’t have to pay your tax in advance. Can you imagine having to pay your tax & national insurance each month and having to pay 50% extra in advance? A lot of people just get by with what’s left so the implication of having to pay more could be disastrous. Yet those in self-assessment are asked twice a year to stump up a payment in advance of tax that may be owed. Those in self-employment are particularly hard hit as business income may be good one year and bad the next. I agree that the self-employed benefit from having to pay tax once or twice a year but perhaps it would be fairer if a monthly payment could be made, based on a self-assessed figure, with a catch up figure or rebate given once a year. The number of clients who have real difficulty in paying their tax in lump sums is increasing therefore I believe that it’s time for a radical re-think.

Earlier in the year I wrote about the “forgotten tax”, national insurance. I pointed out that our basic tax rate is really 32% rather than the 20% as most people think. I had a long conversation with one reader who is still convinced that my figure is wrong as it states quite clearly that they are paying 20% tax. For years we have all been conned by successive governments as not only do they not include national insurance as tax but they also confuse people by setting a lower threshold for national insurance so making people pay “tax” before they reach their personal allowance (£10,000 for 2014/15). This is as big a con as asking us mugs pay for road tax & then spending the money on everything but potholes! It’s about time that this anomaly is scrapped and governments come clean about how much tax we are really paying!!

If you’re in business and you need help either speak to your accountant or give me a call, I will be happy to help in any way that I can

Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, MP and Lynden Stowe, Leader of Cotswold District Council, met with Ken Wenman, CEO, and Heather Strawbridge, Chairman, of the SW Ambulance Trust. ‘The meeting was pretty frank and blunt on both sides’. Mr Wenman made a number of important points.

• The 8 minute target for the most serious life threatening Red One calls take priority - anything less than acutely life threatening, particularly in rural areas, will get a slower response time. • Demand for ambulances in Glos has increased by 8%. The Trust is only partly funded for this and will not be funded at all next year. • Hospital turn-around times are unacceptably slow • Figures show the Cotswolds are healthier than other areas in Glos, requiring less emergency & non- emergency ambulance treatment.

BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS THIS MONTH: However, the ambulance trust will consider stationing an additional 12-hour double crewed SHIPSTON-ON-STOUR, Sheldon Bosley Hub ambulance in the North Cotswolds for a pilot period of 3 months to examine whether this will help reduce response times. 21/08/2014 CHIPPING CAMPDEN, Chipping Campden School 26/08/2014 CHIPPING NORTON, Glyme Hall Saving Our Magnificent Meadows. 01/09/2014 This national conservation project is targeting just under 6,000 hectares of wildflower meadows and grasslands in nine strategic landscapes across the UK, including the Do Something Amazing... GYM PERSONAL FITNESS THERAPY INJURY MEMBERSHIP TRAINING CLASSES ROOMS REHABILITATION BACK PAIN – WHAT CAN YOU DO?

One of the most common causes of complaint we hear about at the gym is back pain - it can be extremely debilitating, causing chronic tiredness, depression and irritability. Your back is a complex structure made up of bones, muscles, nerves and joints, which can make it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain. In most cases it is not serious damage but small muscle strains, sprains or pinched nerves – even so, these can be very unpleasant and the longer these small injuries are left untreated, the more likelihood there is of developing a chronic back problem.

Here are some of the most common causes and what you can do to help;

1. Commuting and Computing; your back is compressed when you sit for too long so try to move as much as possible during the day, and align your spine properly when sitting.

2. Overdoing it at the weekend; gardening or a game of tennis when your body isn’t prepared are two common culprits. The only preventative solution here is exercise.

3. Absentmindedness; picking something up from the floor, loading the dishwasher – it’s always the simplest of things. Prevent this by teaching your body to engage its core muscles properly .

If you do find yourself suffering, the first step is to get things checked by a professional to rule out any serious damage. After that, a programme of stretching, strengthening and back maintenance can work wonders for long term relief. THE WORST THING you can do is NOTHING!

Sherborne Primary School have won this year's, ' Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust' Primary Schools Quiz. The final took place at Eastington Village Hall on Wednesday 2nd July and is the culmination of an annual event which runs over a period of six months. This year over 90 schools took part and in the final we came up against Clearwell Church of England Primary School from the Forest of Dean and St. James Church of England Primary School from Cheltenham. As those taking part know, the questions are very challenging, often baffling the audience of adults, and the quiz is always a close run affair. The team, consisting of Ferdy, Kenny, Henry, Ellen and Amy were delighted with the win and we are looking forward to taking part again next year.

44 CHIPPING CAMPDEN SCHOOL by Lisa Ironmonger

This month we say a fond farewell to many students and three members of staff whose careers collectively span almost 100 years. Year 11 students shared tears of joy and sadness as they gathered for their Leavers’ Assembly. There was a blast from the past as they arrived to photos of themselves as new recruits to CCS back in Year 7 projected on the screen. There were thoughtful gifts and kind words to thank the teachers and staff for all the support they have offered the group on their journey through school, and an opportunity for the tutors to share their fond and funny memories of time shared with the students.

The celebrations didn’t end there. Year 11 had a fabulous evening at their Dinner Dance at Stratford Manor Hotel. Over 170 pupils arrived at school in all sorts of weird and wonderful transport with friends, families and onlookers enjoying the party atmosphere. We look forward to welcoming many of the group back in September as they join the sixth form to continue their learning journey with CCS.

We have now wished Year 13 farewell. On May 23rd everyone dressed to impress, enjoyed a celebratory assembly and a fine meal. Mrs King would like to wish everyone great success in the summer and in the future. The end of term also saw the retirement of three staff; Miss Pratley joined the school in 1977 as a maths teacher and went on to lead this department for more than 30 years. Mr Southam joined in 1979 having turned down the opportunity of a professional contract with Everton FC. He taught in and then led the geography department and contributed to PE and the wider pastoral life of the school. He retires as Head of Key Stage 4 having been part of the senior leadership team for over a decade. Finally, Mrs Sojka, after 18 years of committed service to the PE department and the school will be retiring.

We’re nearly at the end of our school year but not yet slowing down. The last month or so we have been hugely energetic in the classroom and out. Some of our YR 6 children have been part of a record breaking challenge by taking part in the BIGGEST EVER live cooking lesson. Led by Jamie Oliver thousands of teachers and students around the world cooked along with Jamie to make a delicious Rainbow Salad Wrap. Our children received a certificate for taking part in this healthy challenge.

This month also sees our Year 6 taking part in a special leaver’s service in Gloucester Cathedral. We will be sad to see them go but are tremendously proud of the mature, creative and caring young people that they have become. We wish them all the best for the future.

As well as looking forward like the rest of Moreton we have spent some time looking back at the momentous events of one hundred years ago. The outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 affected many millions of families in Moreton, in Britain and ultimately around the world. The whole school spent time last term considering how the value of service means helping others and can mean giving up something yourself to help another person. Our older children were able to relate this to the idea of serving your country.

In History club we have been finding out about the men of Moreton who gave their lives for others in the war. We visited the Memorial and Church to find the names of the soldiers. Then we used websites to help us find out more. Some lived in East Street near our school. Some were only in their teens when they died. One of us realised straight away he was finding out about his great grandfather and great uncles. We discovered that one of the soldiers had a father born in Jamaica and a grandfather who was born in Belgium. It was fascinating realising that people have travelled to Britain for centuries – not just the Romans and the Vikings! As part of the commemorations one of the Art galleries in Moreton is mounting an exhibition of ‘poppy’ themed art. We are really excited that our school has been invited to take part so we are all entering. Please look out for some of our work in town in early July. Finally we must congratulate both our Football and Netball teams. Both have taken part in outdoor tournaments despite some atrocious weather and each team has enjoyed great success. In football our mixed teams came away with medals and second place. In netball we managed to secure both first and second positions. Brilliant!
