  • What Makes Me Feel Drawn to KROKE Music Is Spiritual Reality of the Musicians, This Means Honesty and Authenticity of the Music
What makes me feel drawn to KROKE music is spiritual reality of the musicians, this means honesty and authenticity of the music. Nigel Kennedy The music is too dark to really represent traditional klezmer. At times, it is almost as if the Velvet Underground have been reborn as a klezmer band. Ari Davidov KROKE live are a hair-raisingly brilliant, unforgettable experience. John Lusk At times they sound jazzy, at times contemporary, at times classical. Their music is at once passionate and danceable. Dominic Raui KROKE (which means Kraków in Yiddish) was formed in 1992 by three friends and graduates of the Kraków Academy of Music: Jerzy Bawoł (accordion), Tomasz Kukurba (viola) and Tomasz Lato (double bass). The members of the group completed all stages of standard music education, including contemporary music. KROKE began by playing klezmer music, which is deeply set in Jewish tradition, and adding a strong influence of Balkan music. Currently, they draw inspiration from a variety of ethnic music from around the world, combining it with elements of jazz and improvisation, creating their own distinctive style. Initially, KROKE performed only in clubs and galleries situated in Kazimierz, a former Jewish district of Kraków. There, for the first time, one could listen to KROKE's songs. They later recorded their first cassette released at their own expense in 1993. While performing at the Ariel gallery, they came to the attention of Steven Spielberg, who was shooting Schindler's List in Kraków at the time. Spielberg invited them to Jerusalem, where he was shooting the final scenes. The group performed a concert at the Survivors' Reunion for those of Oskar Schindler's list who made it through the war.

  • An Actor's Life and Backstage Strife During WWII
Media Release For immediate release June 18, 2021 An actor’s life and backstage strife during WWII INSPIRED by memories of his years working as a dresser for actor-manager Sir Donald Wolfit, Ronald Harwood’s evocative, perceptive and hilarious portrait of backstage life comes to Melville Theatre this July. Directed by Jacob Turner, The Dresser is set in England against the backdrop of World War II as a group of Shakespearean actors tour a seaside town and perform in a shabby provincial theatre. The actor-manager, known as “Sir”, struggles to cast his popular Shakespearean productions while the able-bodied men are away fighting. With his troupe beset with problems, he has become exhausted – and it’s up to his devoted dresser Norman, struggling with his own mortality, and stage manager Madge to hold things together. The Dresser scored playwright Ronald Harwood, also responsible for the screenplays Australia, Being Julia and Quartet, best play nominations at the 1982 Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards. He adapted it into a 1983 film, featuring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay, and received five Academy Award nominations. Another adaptation, featuring Ian McKellen and Anthony Hopkins, made its debut in 2015. “The Dresser follows a performance and the backstage conversations of Sir, the last of the dying breed of English actor-managers, as he struggles through King Lear with the aid of his dresser,” Jacob said. “The action takes place in the main dressing room, wings, stage and backstage corridors of a provincial English theatre during an air raid. “At its heart, the show is a love letter to theatre and the people who sacrifice so much to make it possible.” Jacob believes The Dresser has a multitude of challenges for it to be successful.

  • Shahid Khan, Illinois
Shahid Khan Illinois ’70 Oxford Cup Roll No. 082 July 27, 2017 | Snowbird, Utah Shahid R. Khan, Illinois ’70, was initiated into the Sigma Rho Chapter on October 12, 1968 as Roll No. 1086. On January 4, 2012, he became the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. His dream of owning an NFL team had become reality on December 14, 2011, in a unanimous 32-0 vote by NFL owners in support of his purchase of the franchise. Khan’s passion for the National Football League took root long before his entry into the league. His dream of one day owning an NFL team began while watching games with his fraternity brothers in the basement of the Beta Theta Pi house as a student at the University of Illinois. Through the success of his own business, Flex-N-Gate Corporation, his dream came true 40 years later. Khan’s history with Flex-N-Gate started in 1970, when he worked at the company as an engineering student at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Khan came from his native Pakistan in 1967 at the age of 16 to attend college. When he graduated in 1971, he became Flex-N-Gate’s engineering manager. In 1978, Khan left Flex-N-Gate and with $13,000 in savings and a $50,000 loan from the Small Business Loan Corporation, he created the start-up Bumper Works, which revolutionized the industry through an innovative one-piece bumper design that is still considered the industry standard for all seamless steel bumpers worldwide.

For the reasons set forth below, we Federal Communications Commission find that the proposed operation of WICD(TV) as a satellite Washington, D.C. 20554 is consistent with our policy. 3. In support of its request that WICD(TV) be permitted to operate as a satellite of WICS-TV, the applicant contends In Re Application of that its proposal meets the three criteria for presumptive grant. First, the applicant states, there is no overlap of the PLAINS TELEVISION PARTNERSHIP City Grade contours of the two stations. Second, (Assignor) WICD(TV)©s area of service is underserved in accordance with the Commission©s "transmission test." Finally, the applicant argues that no party would be willing and able to and File No. BALCT-931124KJ operate WICD(TV) on a stand-alone basis because of the nature of the Springfield-Decatur-Champaign market. In GUY GANNETT PUBLISHING CO. addition, the applicant argues that the Grade B overlap of (Assignee) WICS-TV and WICD(TV) only amounts to 2.6% of the population in the WICD(TV) contour and 2% in the For Consent to Assign the License for Station WICS-TV contour. • Camp Parody in the British Long Eighteenth Century
GREAT AFFECTATIONS: CAMP PARODY IN THE BRITISH LONG EIGHTEENTH CENTURY A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sarah Lynn Cote January 2014 © 2014 Sarah Lynn Cote GREAT AFFECTATIONS: CAMP PARODY IN THE BRITISH LONG EIGHTEENTH CENTURY Sarah Lynn Cote, Ph.D. Cornell University 2014 My dissertation explains that, despite the nominal anachronism, camp has always inhabited literature of the long eighteenth century, namely those examples that were created from and, to some degree, for those experiencing the world from a socially or sexually marginal perspective. To interpret as camp is to not only account for the excesses of style that often infuriate and discompose aesthetic and generic categories of the time period, although it can provide an explanatory motive for noticeably disruptive and even flamboyant literary style. A camp reading can also bring together seemingly disparate texts under the umbrella of alterity. It provides an ideal and common language for discussing formal and generic literary styles alongside feminist, queer, and cultural interpretations. Camp in the eighteenth century is particularly well-positioned to make important contributions to ongoing discussions about the public sphere, the shifts in audience and reception among all media, and the influences of realism, especially relating to the bourgeois representations of affects and emotions. To me, camp is a parodic project, which means that it must bear a symbiotic relationship to the normative text or value that it plays up. Its parody is reliant on those modes opposed as “other” to their marginalized selves; in my examples, the target ranges among the heteronormative family, the orderly body, the sexual object, temporal mastery, aesthetic ownership, sentimental empathy, and even the self.

LONDON: GEORGE BELL & SONS, YORK ST., COVENT GARDEN. AND NEW YORK. 1892. ^ LONDON : REPRINTED FROM STEREO-PLATES BY WILLIAM CLOWES AND SONS, LIMITED. STAMFORD STREET AND CHARING CROSS. TRANSLATOE'S PEEFACE. IN this translation of the Galatea of Cervantes, the object has been to convey the story in language as closely as pos- sible to the original. The translator fears he may not alway have succeeded in completely rendering the narratives ot the various incidents which characterise this simple pastoral epic, and that also he may have to apologise for somewhat ot roughness in his transfusion of the poetry, which has found its equivalent, where the lines have been long, in blank verse. The other portions of the poetry he has rendered literally, but wherever the two dialects assimilated he has thought it sufficient to furnish only a kind of metrical rhythm. This elegant and simple production, the earliest from the pen of the eminent poet and novelist of Spain, pour- traying young, fresh, and vivid scintillations of genius, has never been translated into any language. We have only its shadow in the French production of Florian, which is based on the Spanish story, and though written in an en- gaging and graceful style, is not that mature and elegant child of the brain of Cervantes which is now for the first time presented to the English reader.

  • Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012
Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012 Founder member of Deep Purple, Jon Lord was born in Leicester. He began playing piano aged 6, studying classical music until leaving school at 17 to become a Solicitor’s clerk. Initially leaning towards the theatre, Jon moved to London in 1960 and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, winning a scholarship, and paying for food and lodgings by performing in pubs. In 1963 he broke away from the school with a group of teachers and other students to form the pioneering London Drama Centre. A year later, Jon “found himself“ in an R and B band called The Artwoods (fronted by Ronnie Wood’s brother, Art) where he remained until the summer of 1967. During this period, Jon became a much sought after session musician recording with the likes of Elton John, John Mayall, David Bowie, Jeff Beck and The Kinks (eg 'You Really Got Me'). In December 1967, Jon met guitarist Richie Blackmore and by early 1968 the pair had formed Deep Purple. The band would pioneer hard rock and go on to sell more than 100 million albums, play live to more than 10 million people, and were recognized in 1972 by The Guinness Book of World Records as “the loudest group in the world”. Deep Purple’s debut LP “Shades of Deep Purple” (1968) generated the American Top 5 smash hit “Hush”. In 1969, singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover joined and the band’s sound became heaver and more aggressive on “Deep Purple in Rock” (1970), where Jon developed a groundbreaking new way of amplifying the sound of the Hammond organ to match the distinctive sound of the electric guitar.
