10 November 2018 Page 14 of 19 Digital Description Refugee 3338 The British map published June 17 1946 gives an idea of the extent of the minefields in the Irish Sea, the Channel and the North Sea. The A-B-C-D pencil line was made by Andre Goderis, with the positions mentioned in the two ‘confidential’ sailing orders dating 23/5/40. He wanted to know where it led. The route steers free from the minefields to a position off Dover and as the vessel was requisitioned it suggests that she would be used in the Operation Dynamo which was about to start. Instead, the B30 was sent to Dartmouth where all Belgian fishing vessels were assembled to await orders. After leaving Blankenberge, the B30 was held up off Dunkerque for 24 hours. Andre’s brother recalls the scene of Dunkerque on fire and the noise of German planes overhead and the frightening gunfire. Having seen what was going on in Dunkerque Andre’s father and his crew refused to sail to Dunkerque. They had to leave the ship and were taken in custody during the time the B30 was used in the operation . Donated by Andre Goderis. Refugee 3340 Front of map reproduced in 3338 and 3339. The photograph is a representation of the hundreds of fishing boats that escaped from France to Newlyn in June 1940 and the following months. This is a report of one such boat and will be of special interest to the le Breton family. 16th December 1940 the crabber Emigrant Cm 2212 left Camaret with 14 escapers, including two RAF pilots, nailed into a secret compartment. The crabber was searched by the Germans with their dogs. They went ashore wishing them Bon Voyach!. This escape was led by French Airforce pilot Jacques Andrieux and the legendary Daniel Lomenech who became a leader in secret operations. Among the crew was Jean Louis le Breton who later married a local girl & settled in Penzance. Colonel Andrieux wrote of their arrival off Cornwall, The skipper shouted “Cornwall straight ahead!” Everyone was delirious. The boat rushed on through a heavy swell. England was there, a dark line on the horizon. The skipper unrolled the Tricolour which was wrapped around his body. In an instant our colours were flapping at the masthead. We were welcomed like heroes. Surrounded by men of the security service, we left for London. From DD Facebook.
