Syllabus (Christology and Mariology, Fall 2014) ! NOTRE DAME SEMINARY ! SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY Professor: Dr. David Liberto Class: Christology and Mariology e-mail: [email protected] Time: Saturday (7:30am-4:30pm) !Office hours: Saturday, 12-1pm Classroom: Room 3 DT 506 - Christology and Mariology Syllabus ! ! !I. Course Description This course treats the theology of the person and mission of Jesus Christ. While providing the biblical foundation for an understanding of Christ, the course is primarily directed to studying Christology from a historico-dogmatic perspective. The course will examine important texts such as the De Incarnatione of St. Athanasius, the De Fide of St. John Damscene, and selections from the Summa theologiae of St. Thomas Aquinas. An essential Mariology will also be covered. The course examines the various Marian dogmas and the relation of Mariology to other !dogmatic areas such as Ecclesiology, Soteriology, and Spiritual Theology. !II. Rationale The person and work of Christ is the foundation of the Christian faith. This central mystery is important for understanding other theological loci such as the Trinity, grace, and the sacraments. For seminarians studying for the priesthood, knowledge of the person and work of Christ is indispensable for understanding the vocation of the priest who is called to minister in persona !Christi. !III. Envisioned Outcomes • Students will understand the problems and solutions in the Patristic development of Christology ! up to the Council of Chalcedon. !1 • Students will be able to identify the subsequent Christological problems after Chalcedon and the Church’s theological response. • Students will understand the various contributions to Christology in the Scholastic period. • Students will be able to evaluate modern christologies in light of the Catholic tradition. • Students will be able to articulate an essential Mariology based on the dogmatic teaching of the ! Church. !IV. Instructional Methods • Lecture • Presentations • Discussion !V. Requirements A. Read all assignments and be prepared to discuss them in class. B. Class presentation (11/22)– Students present a critical summary of an assigned article or a synopsis of their research from doing the Research Paper C. Exam (11/1) – Students will be asked to write in-class essays on various questions. D. Research Paper (due the last day of class (e-format preferred) – See the Research Paper Guideline Sheet for more information on what is required for the assignment. One should also consult the Research Paper Grading Rubric for grading criteria. !VI. Texts A. Christology Reader B. Other primary and secondary texts as assigned. Glossary of Philosophical and Theological Terms adoptionism – the general name applied to any Christological heresy which denies the natural and eternal sonship of Christ, but forwards a view of Christ as an adopted son. !3 anhypostatic – a term applied to the humanity of Christ, which although an integral human nature, does not terminate in a human hypostasis or person. Apollinarianism – a Christological heresy named for Apollinaris of Laodiciea which understood that the Logos assumed an incomplete human nature, the Logos taking the place of the intellective soul. Arianism – a Christological/Trinitarian heresy named for the presbyter, Arius of Alexandria, which denied the deity of Christ. Arius’s phrase, “There was a time when he (the Logos) was not,” was condemned at the Council of Nicaea in 325. communicatio idiomata (communication of idioms or properties) – based on the hypostatic union, this refers to the ability to predicate of Christ (the person) properties of both the human and divine natures. The expression, “God died on the cross,” is true based on the communication of idioms. Co-Redemptrix – a title applied to Our Lady based on the role she plays in the redemption of mankind. This role, however, is qualitatively different from, and dependent upon, the role played by Christ as the Redeemer of the world. Docetism (Gr. δοkεῖν- to seem or appear) – Christological heresy of the first centuries of the Church which understood the Incarnation (and therefore the Passion and Resurrection) as mere appearances by the Son of God in the economy. Ebionites – a Jewish-Christian sect of the Apostolic Period that denied the natural generation of Christ, thereby denying the full divinity of the Second Person of the Trinity. Eutychianism – Christological heresy named after the monk Eutyches which posited that over- emphasized the unity of the two natures in Christ so as to fuse the two into one theandric nature. fomes peccati – a term used to describe the disordered inclination to sin as a result of original sin. hypostasis (Gr. ὑ./)01)*+) – a philosophical term that developed within the Trinitarian controversies of the 4th century and again in the Christological controversies of the 5th century. Originally having the same or similar sense as ousia (Gr. ὀυσία), the term came to be distinguished from ousia by the Cappadocians. At Chalcedon (451), Christ is described as one hypostasis in two natures. hypostatic union – a term referring to the union of the two natures of Christ in the person (hypostasis) of the Word. Immaculate Conception – a title and teaching applied to Mary based on the fact that she was conceived without the stain of original sin in view of the future merits of Christ. Kenotic Christology – descriptive of various christologies of the 19th century that applied the emptying (Gr. κένωσις) of Christ, as described in Phil 2:6-11, to the divinity of Christ. logos anthropos Christology – a type of Christology, usually identified with Antioch, that stressed the full and integral human nature. logos sarx Christology – a type of Christology, usually identified with Alexandria, that stressed the union of the Logos with the humanity of Christ. Mediatrix – a title used by various popes (Pius X, Benedict XV, Pius XI) to describe the real but derivative role of Mary in the mediation of graces. χριστός Gk. ) – a Hebrew word meaning anointed. A term/title used of ; משיח .Messiah (Hb kings and priests in the OT. !4 Mixed Relation – a philosophical concept developed in the Scholastic Period to describe the unequal relations between two things, whereby the relation from one thing to the other is real, but the relation of the second thing to the first is merely logical. A prime example is mixed relation between the knower and the thing known. Monoergism (Gr. µόνος- one, alone and ἐ789:;*1- activity) – a Christological error that asserted only one theandric activity of the Word Incarnate.

    198 Jeffrey G Silcock The truth of divine impassibility: a new look at an old argument Jeffrey G Silcock Jeff is head of the History and Systematic Theology Department at ALC and serves as chair of the LCA’s Commission on Theology and Inter-Church Relations. Introduction From his Nazi prison cell in 1944, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote to his friend Eberhard Bethge that ‘only the suffering God can help’.1 Just after the war, the Japanese Lutheran theologian Kazoh Kitamori published his ground-breaking book, Theology of the pain of God,2 based around Jeremiah 31:20, where he developed a similar theology of the cross: the pain of God heals our pain. In the suffering of Christ, God himself suffers. In 1973 Jürgen Moltmann came out with his classic, The crucified God, where he takes this further and develops a critical theology of the cross. He holds that a ‘theology after Auschwitz’ has to revise completely the traditional doctrine of God that teaches divine impassibility. Moltmann at the outset reflects on his own experience: ‘Shattered and broken, the survivors of my generation were then returning from camps and hospitals to the lecture room. A theology which did not speak of God in the sight of the one who was abandoned and crucified would have had nothing to say to us then’.3 The old teaching of classical theism that God is beyond suffering died in the death camps of WWII and was no longer tenable. Moltmann wrote his book, which had an enormous impact in its day, with the conviction that only if God is not detached from human suffering, but willingly enters into it with compassion, is there any hope for the future.

    ABSTRACT “Much More Ours Than Yours”: The Figure of Joseph the Patriarch in the New Testament and the Early Church by John Lee Fortner This paper investigates the figure of Joseph the patriarch in early Christian interpretation, demonstrating the importance of such figures in articulating a Christian reading of the history of Israel, and the importance of this reading in the identity formation of early Christianity. The paper also illumines the debt of this Christian reading of Israel’s history to the work of Hellenistic Judaism. The figure of Joseph the patriarch is traced through early Christian interpretation, primarily from the Eastern Church tradition up to the 4th century C.E. Review Essay*1 The Search for a Plural America: Protestant and Enlightenment Authority in American History Andrew Finstuen Boise State University A crisis of authority defines modernity. The crisis in the Christian West dates to the Reformation and the church-and-state conflicts based upon the question: whose Christianity? The crisis deepened during the Enlightenment as advances in science, reason, and technology changed the question: Christianity or not? By the 1960s, post-structuralism or postmodernity had posed the very question of authority and asserted competing authorities. Out of the first two crises, America was born. Shaped by the forces of a plural Christian West and the Enlightenment, the founders constructed a nation steeped in the assumptions of both faith and reason. They balanced these authorities by disestablishing religion, providing for its free exercise, and creating three branches of government to obstruct runaway power. For George Marsden, Francis A. McAnaney Professor Emeritus at the University of Notre Dame, the marriage of liberal Protestantism and Enlightenment principles held the country together for nearly two hundred years. In his The Twilight of the American Enlightenment: The 1950s and the Crisis of Liberal Belief (2013), Marsden argues that in the mid-twentieth century this formula began to fail.
