on the occurrence of fruit-eating monitor lizard in the Northern Sierra Madre National Park..... 47 3 PROJECT SUMMARY We have developed a range of non-intrusive techniques to investigate the ecology and population biology of fruit-eating monitor lizards in the Philippines. We have investigated the status of the animals in various parts of Luzon and conclude that they no longer exist in many areas as a result of large-scale deforestation and are now restricted to fragmented forest in eastern Luzon. Small isolated populations also exist on Polillo and Alabat Islands in Quezon Province. A new form of fruit-eating monitor lizard was discovered in the Sierra Madre mountains whose taxonomic status is currently under study. Work on Polillo Island has concentrated on identifying key resources for lizards in degraded forests, comparing population structure in habitats of different quality and examining the animals’ role in the dispersal of Pandanus and Canarium seeds. Populations persist in moderately degraded forest if suitable shelter trees are present and key fruit resources available for at least part of the year, but these populations occur at higher densities and contain very few adult males. Where corridors of non cultivated land exist between patches they are utilised by the lizards. Evidence was collected suggesting the lizards are responsible for almost all uphill dispersal of Pandanus seeds and therefore play an important role in the maintenance of microhabitats that are essential to many endemic plants, animals and fungi. In May 2006 an Animal Planet documentary about the lizards and their plight on Polillo was released and shown world-wide. 4 Important Note: CLASSIFIED INFORMATION Early in this study it became apparent that some discoveries about the distribution patterns of giant frugivorous monitor lizards had the potential to be misused and lead unscrupulous people to places where they would most easily be able to catch the animals. For this reason the specific identification of certain tree species have been withheld. I will supply the information on request to bona fide fieldworkers PROJECT BACKGROUND Giant frugivorous lizards (GFL) occur only in the Philippine Islands. They are an evolutionary and ecological oddity because they are obligate fruit eaters, extremely large (>9kg/180cm) and belong to a family of lizards whose other members are exclusively carnivorous. Despite their size they are extremely secretive animals. Only two species of GFL are known to science, one (Varanus mabitang) was discovered in 2001 and the other (V.olivaceus) was described in 1845 but had been the subject of a single study in the 1970s using destructive methodologies that are now considered unacceptable. Both are of high conservation concern because of their fragile niches and inability to survive outside their rapidly dwindling habitat of lowland

Indicus per hectare on the island. Plans for the release of the endangered Guam rail (Gallirallus owstoni) on Cocos Island required the culling of V. Indicus, because the lizards are known to consume birds and bird eggs. Cocos Island has 7 different habitats; resort/horticulture, Casuarina forest, mixed strand forest, Pemphis scrub, Scaevola scrub, sand/open area, and wetlands. I removed as many V. Indicus as possible from the three principal habitats; Casuarina forest, mixed scrub forest, and a garbage dump (resort/horticulture) using six different trapping methods.

Outline progress over the last 6 months (April – September) against the agreed baseline timetable for the project Key accomplishments during the period April-September 2006 were as follows: 1. Biological surveys completed and priority sites selected and mapped. Biological surveys were completed in two more key areas during this period, namely Barangay Anibawan in Aluyon and Sitio Litid, Barangay Lipata in Panukulan. Full technical reports on these surveys are being prepared and will be summarised in future reports. A preliminary ‘marine resource assessment’ was completed in September by four scientists from the UK NGO, Coral Cay Conservation (CCC), assisted by PIBCFI personnel. This project was prompted by recommendations arising from earlier surveys, and involved rapid assessments of coral cover, and coral and fish diversity, in 12 discrete sites in coral reefs fringing Polillo and Burdeos Municipalities. Results indicate that over-fishing, especially cyanide and dynamite fishing, remains a serious problem in most areas, though areas of good to excellent reef cover, and high species diversity and abundance were confirmed in fish sanctuaries established and managed by local communities in some areas. Findings and recommendations arising from this project and the earlier surveys will now be used to develop new project funding proposals intended to extend these surveys, conduct awareness campaigns and assist implementation of relevant conservation management interventions in selected, highest priority areas.

Box 1975 Twentynine Palms, CA 92277, US [email protected] Abstract: Asian Water Monitors (Varanus s. salvator) are widespread on the main island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, but rather rare in the province of North Sulawesi because of human predation. This study documents observations on the daily behavior of a small coastal population over a two week period. Observations of aquatic behavior led to discussion of the possibility that this population is able to catch live fish in a particular coastal lagoon. Introduction The Asian Water Monitor (Varanus salvator salvator) is perhaps the most wide-spread of all varanids. It is found from Sri Lanka, northern India, Bangladesh, Burma, Vietnam and Hainan (China) through Malaysia east to the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi and Wetar (De Lisle, 1996). Its ability to colonize the remote islands of Malaysia and Indonesia might be due to its adaptability towards freshwater and saltwater (Traeholt, 1994a), and also its large size is an advantage, giving both the energy reserves and power to survive an extended sea voyage and a greater potential to actually achieve a landfall. According to Undersecretary for Priority Projects Jonas Leones, the aid was part of the second phase of ComPassion Project, a community outreach initiative of DENR career officials and employees for government hospitals fighting the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Recipients were medical frontliners at the East Avenue Medical Center, Lung Center of the Philippines, National Kidney and Transplant Institute, Philippine Heart Center and Philippine Children’s Medical Center. Leones said each hospital was provided with 30 sets of complete overall suit and face shields for doctors and nurses, and 30 sets of laboratory suit with hair and shoe covers and face shields for the support staff. The medical frontliners were also given grocery packs, which included alcohol and washable face masks. Leones, who is also the president of DENR Association of Career Executives, said that the Compassion Project was established out of their desire to help those affected by the pandemic. QC so far has recorded the highest number of corona virus infections in Metro Manila. “ComPassion was derived from the words compassion and passion. As a government agency, we thought of a campaign where we can help those who are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

    Evolution of Limblessness Evolution of Limblessness Early on in life, many people learn that lizards have four limbs whereas snakes have none. This dichotomy not only is inaccurate but also hides an exciting story of repeated evolution that is only now beginning to be understood. In fact, snakes represent only one of many natural evolutionary experiments in lizard limblessness. A similar story is also played out, though to a much smaller extent, in amphibians. The repeated evolution of snakelike tetrapods is one of the most striking examples of parallel evolution in animals. This entry discusses the evolution of limblessness in both reptiles and amphibians, with an emphasis on the living reptiles. Reptiles Based on current evidence (Wiens, Brandley, and Reeder 2006), an elongate, limb-reduced, snakelike morphology has evolved at least twenty-five times in squamates (the group containing lizards and snakes), with snakes representing only one such origin. These origins are scattered across the evolutionary tree of squamates, but they seem especially frequent in certain families. In particular, the skinks (Scincidae) contain at least half of all known origins of snakelike squamates.
