In order to facilitatethe use of currently available measures, tests have been categorizedin terms of 10 broad areas and subcategorized in terms of theconstructs they measure. The 10 areas of classification used are: (1) test batteries measuring many constructs: (21 measures of aptitudeand/or intelligence: (31 measures of the ability tocope with cognitive demands: (4) measures of the ability to cope with personal-social demands: (51 family measures: (6) measures of language development: (7) measures et sensory-motor or physical skills or status: (8) measures of subject-matter achievement:(91 measures of teacher and cr program: and (10) miscellaneous measures. As indicated above, each measure was further assigned to one or more construct areas depending upon test content. For example, the broad area "ability tocope with cognitive demands" includes tests measuring the followingand other constructs: attention: attitude toward school: curiosity:memory: and reasoning. In separate sections of the report the methodologyand general conclusions of the review are indicated. -
Projective Techniques
PROJECTIVE TECHNIQUES Projective techniques • In psychology, a projective test is a personality test designed to let a person respond to ambiguous stimuli, presumably revealing hidden emotions and internal conflicts projected by the person into the test. • Projective tests have their origins in psychoanalytic psychology, which argues that humans have conscious and unconscious attitudes and motivations that are beyond or hidden from conscious awareness. Definition of Projective Techniques • An unstructured, indirect form of questioning that encourages respondents to project their underlying motivations, beliefs, attitudes or feelings regarding the issues of concern. • In projective techniques, respondents are asked to interpret the behavior of others. • In interpreting the behavior of others, respondents indirectly project their own motivations, beliefs, attitudes, or feelings into the situation. Projective techniques • The general theoretical position behind projective tests is that whenever a specific question is asked, the response will be consciously- formulated and socially determined. • These responses do not reflect the respondent's unconscious or implicit attitudes or motivations. • The respondent's deep-seated motivations may not be consciously recognized by the respondent or the respondent may not be able to verbally express them in the form demanded by the questioner. • Advocates of projective tests stress that the ambiguity of the stimuli presented within the tests allow subjects to express thoughts that originate on a deeper level than tapped by explicit questions, and provide content that may not be captured by responsive tools that may lack appropriate items. Rorschach test • A projective psychological test : created in 1921 with the publication of Psychodiagnostik by Hermann Rorschach. • The best known and most frequently used projective test • consisting of 10 inkblots printed on cards (five in black and white, five in color) • A subject is shown a series of ten irregular but symmetrical inkblots, and asked to explain what they see. -

Chapter 1 Draw, Write, Speak, Play: The Role of Projection in Diagnosis and Therapy of Children and Adolescents Martin H. Maurer Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/67578 Abstract In this chapter, I will (1) review the concept and function of projective mechanisms on a psychodynamic basis. In this section, I will outline the relation of projection to the unconscious, its use in innerpsychic dynamics, and the underlying mechanisms for its use in psychotherapy like creativity, imagination, and symbolization; (2) give an over- view over the use of projective methods for testing and diagnosis in the psychological sciences; and (3) exemplify the use of projective methods in diagnostics and psychother- apy of children and adolescents. I will present current methods based on drawing, verbally describing and imaginating, and playing arts, focusing on sand play therapy and miniature figure play. Concept and function of projective mechanisms 1.1. The relation of projections to the unconscious The Latin word “proiectus” means “to throw forth,” or “to cast forward,” and with regard to psychological sciences, several definitions have been provided. First of all, Sigmund Freud [1] described the “classical” projection as defense mechanism when the ego is threatened and refuses to acknowledge the trait, it attributes the trait to the outside world [2]. Later on, Freud broadened his view of projective mechanisms and refers the term projection to a general primitive mechanism, not only a defense mechanism, implying that projection may also be present when there is no conflict [3].
