TEACHERS’ NOTES PRIMARY VIRTUAL TOUR Introduction This set of Teachers’ Notes has been created by the Education Department of the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks in order to aid the teaching and interpretation of the ‘Proclaiming a Republic: the 1916 Rising’ Virtual Tour. The virtual tour - Provide teachers and student with an engaging and thought-provoking learning resource based around the aims to: 1916 Easter Rising and the National Museum of Ireland’s expansive ‘Easter Week’ collection of artefacts and images. - Provoke discussion and reflection upon key themes reflected in the exhibition. These include the roles of ordinary people during the Rising, in particular children, young people and women – the choices they had to make and what motivated those choices. These Teachers’ - Provide further information about the key artefacts on each stop of the Notes aim to: Virtual Tour, as well as a brief historical context. - Suggest potential discussion points in order to aid classroom discussion, and to suggest possible solo and group activities for students to engage in, which will enhance their understanding of the material presented. - Provide teachers with the relevant curriculum links, highlighting why each section of the tour was chosen and to explain what we hope to achieve for students at each location. We also consider those who had no A number of themes choice but were impacted by, or caught up in the Rising. Irish Migration Studies in Latin America Vol. 4, No. 3: July 2006 www.irlandeses.org From the Putumayo to Connemara Roger Casement’s Amazonian Voyage of Discovery * Peter James Harris University of São Paulo Roger Casement in his Brazilian Period (Pádraig Ó Cuanacháin Irish History) This article examines the evidence provided by Roger Casement’s accounts of his voyage to the Putu- mayo in the Amazon rain forest in 1910 in order to reveal the Odyssean complexity of his personality, and to suggest that, in a metaphorical sense at least, this journey represented the beginnings of an Irish homecoming for Casement, just as the wanderings of Homer’s hero led him to the recovery of his house and kingdom in Ithaca. The hanging of Roger Casement as a traitor at Pentonville prison, London, on 3 August 1916 placed him amongst the most prominent martyrs to the Irish nationalist cause. Yet just five years previously he had received a knighthood from the British government for his investigations into the methods of white rubber traders in the Peruvian jungle. The dichotomy in his character represented by these two moments has been charted as a life-long series of ambivalences and paradoxes in Roger Sawyer’s biography Casement: The Flawed Hero (1984), and was judged to be of paramount significance by the prosecution in his trial for treason. A compulsive journal-writer, Casement was to find his diaries used at the time of his trial to sully his reputation and to ensure that he was denied the chance of a reprieve. To this day, opinion continues to be divided between those who believe that his ‘Black’ diaries are a genuine, albeit clandestine, account of his homosexual activities, written at a time when such activities were a prisonable offence, and those who claim that they were the calumnious work of the British Secret Service. -

Transporting Rebellion: How the motorcar shaped the Rising By Dr Leanne Blaney As motorcars sped members of the Secret Military Council towards Liberty Hall on Easter Sunday, few could have imagined that their next motor journey would be by military lorry – when their bodies were taken for burial to Arbour Hill after their execution. However, one obvious certainty – even among the confusion of Easter Sunday – was that motor vehicles, specifically the car would play a pivotal role during the upcoming Rising. Historiography relating to the Easter Rising tends to focus on the personalities, places and politics involved in the rebellion. Yet, we can gain a new perspective on the Rising, when we choose to assess more mundane aspects of the uprising. Understanding the role played by the motorcar as the Irish Volunteers prepared for the Rising and the manner in which cars were utilised by the British authorities and Irish civilians caught up in the six days of fighting alongside the Volunteers, allows us to recognise how the car acted as an agent for change during the conflict. By 1916, motorcars had become an accepted mainstay of Irish life for a variety of reasons. Firstly, they were relatively familiar sights on Irish roads. Two years earlier, in April 1914, the Irish Local Government Board had estimated that 19,554 motorised vehicles (predominantly motorcars and motorcycles) were registered within Ireland.1 While the outbreak of the First World War did witness a reduction in the number of motor vehicles registered on Irish roads as motorists and motor fuel became scarce, motorcars remained relatively plentiful, especially around Dublin. -

Tonight we honor all the Men and Women who had a role in the Easter 1916 Rising whether in the planning or active participation.Irish America has always had a very important role in striving for Irish Freedom. I would like to share a quote from George Washington "May the God in Heaven, in His justice and mercy, grant thee more prosperous fortunes and in His own time, cause the sun of Freedom to shed its benign radiance on the Emerald Isle." 1915-1916 was that time. On the death of O'Donovan Rossa on June 29, 1915 Thomas Clarke instructed John Devoy to make arrangements to bring the Fenian back home. I am proud that Ellen Ryan Jolly the National President of the LAAOH served as an Honorary Pallbearer the only woman at the Funeral held in New York. On August 1 at Glasnevin the famous oration of Padraic Pearse was held at the graveside. We choose this week for this presentation because it was midway between these two historic events as well as being the Anniversary week of Constance Markeivicz death on July 15,1927. She was condemned to death in 1916 but as a woman her sentence was changed to prison for life. And so we remember those executed. We remember them in their own words and the remembrances of others. Bulmer Hobson's formative influence in numerous political and cultural organisations begs the question as to why, until now, his autobiographical Ireland: yesterday and tomorrow (1968) remained the only consequential account of his career. Dr Hay expresses little surprise, however, at this historiographical gap. In fact, Hobson's position as 'worsted in the political game' (p. 1) serves as this book's premise. -

STATEMENT OF DESMOND RYAN, AUTHOR, "Oulart", Forrest Road, Swords, Co. Dublin. I was born in London on 27th August, 1893. My father was W.P. Ryan, Newspaper Editor and Journalist. He returned to Ireland in 1905. He then went to Navan and took over a paper called "The Irish Peasant" which he changed to "The fish Nation". It was one of the Sinn Féin papers of the day. He told the story of that particular paper in a book called "The Pope's Green Island" and then in a novel called "The Plough and the Gross". -
Who Were the 'Extremists'?
Who were the ‘Extremists’? Pierce Beasley (Piaras Béaslaí) (1881-1965) was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers. He worked as a freelance journalist, having been sacked from the Evening Telegraph in 1914 due to his separatist activities. He was also the producer of na h-Aisteoirí, a company of Gaelic amateur actors heavily involved in the IRB. During the Rising, he was deputy commanding officer of the 1 st Dublin Battalion under Edward Daly. He went on to become a Sinn Féin MP in 1918, but left politics following independence. Bealsaí is mentioned in 108 of the 251 reports. Thomas Byrne (1877-1962) was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and a captain in the Irish Volunteers. A veteran of the Second Boer War, where he had fought in the Irish Brigade with Major John MacBride, he led the Maynooth Volunteers to the GPO during the Easter Rising. Following independence, Byrne was appointed Captain of the Guard at Dáil Éireann by Michael Collins. Byrne is mentioned in 108 of the 251 reports, primarily as a frequent visitor to the shop of Thomas J Clarke. Thomas J Clarke (1858-1916), known as Tom, was a central figure in the leadership of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and helped to found the Irish Volunteers in 1913. A key figure in planning the Rising, he was the first to sign the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and was shot in the first round of executions at Kilmainham Jail on 3 May 1916. Clarke lived at 10 Richmond Avenue, Fairview and owned a tobacconist’s shop at 75a Parnell Street which was a hub of IRB activity in the city. -

Historical Crisis: Easter Rising of 1916 Chairs: Abby Nicholson ’19 and Lex Keegan Jiganti ’19 Rapporteur: Samantha Davidson ’19 CAMUN 2018: Easter Rising of 1916 Page 1 of 6 Dear Delegates, Welcome to CAMUN 2018! Our names are Abby Nicholson and Lex Keegan Jiganti and we are very excited to be chairing this committee. We are both juniors at Concord Academy and have done Model UN since our freshman year. After much debate over which topic we should discuss, we decided to run a historical crisis committee based on the Easter Rising of 1916. While not a commonly known historical event, the Easter Rising of 1916 was a significant turning point in the relations between Ireland and Great Britain. With recent issues such as Brexit and the Scottish Referendum, it is more crucial than ever to examine the effects of British imperialism and we hope that this committee will offer a lens with which to do so. The committee will start on September 5th, 1914, as this was when the Irish Republican Brotherhood first met to discuss planning an uprising before the war ended. While the outcome of the Rising is detailed in this background guide, we are intentionally beginning debate two years prior in order to encourage more creative and effective plans and solutions than what the rebels actually accomplished. This is a crisis committee, meaning that delegates will be working to pass directives and working with spontaneous events as they unfold as opposed to simply writing resolutions. We hope this background guide provides an adequate summary of the event, but we encourage further research on both the topic and each delegate’s assigned person.
