Innovative projects: Sleeping “Strandkorb” (German )

A “Strandkorb” is a special chair designed to provide comfort and protection from sun, wind, rain, and sand on beaches frequented by tourists. They are predominantly used on the coasts of North Sea and Baltic Sea, as well as other coasts with considerable winds. During the summer months, they can usually be rented from “Strandkorb” keepers. Two different Source: www.strandkorb-binz.de shapes can be distinguished, the straight angular North Sea variety and the round rolling Baltic Sea variety. The “Strandkorb” was invented in 1882 by German basketmaker Wilhelm Bartelmann in , on request of a tourist from Warnemünde. In 1883, he announced the first rental service in a local newspaper. The first models were single seaters and appeared quickly on other parts of the German coast. Today's models are mostly two seaters with tiltable tops, some allowing people to lie down completely. They are equipped with armrests and footrests, storage space below the seats, rain proof covers and sunshades. Together with three partners (a “Strandkorb” manufacturer, the regional DMO of “Ostsee- Holstein-Tourismus” and a design studio) the DMO of Schleswig-Holstein Province launched the development of a new Sleeping “Strandkorb”. Since June 2016 the first prototype can be booked in six different Baltic Sea destinations. The innovative Sleeping “Strandkorb” has a width of 1,30 metres, is 2,40 metres long and has two small windows at each side. Due to its dimension it offers sufficient space for two adults and it is possible to fully cover the “Strandkorb” to be protected from wind and rain. The manufacturer currently charges around EUR 6.000 for one Sleeping “Strandkorb”. The new Sleeping “Strandkorb” offers a completely new beach experience, as it is now Source: www.luebecker-bucht-ostsee.de legally possible to stay overnight at the beach, which is normally forbidden and to enjoy the empty beach during sunset and sunrise. The price for one night varies from EUR 15 to 95, depending on the location, the added services and the season. The Sleeping “Strandkorb” is always located in close proximity to a sanitary facility.

The summer season 2016 will be the test run for the first prototype to find out how well it functions in operation and if amendments to the concept are necessary. From 2017 it is planned to go for mass production and it is expected to see a significant amount of them on other beaches (also outside ), but also at holiday resorts or private homes.
