The materials in this collection document McKenna’s research for the first edition of this book. ―The Roycroft Shop had its day, but its day, unlike that of Currier and Ives, has not been documented. What the Roycroft Printing Shop accomplished was important in the history of American book making and graphic design. However, its efforts have been ignored or belittled until recently so I hope that this work will generate a greater interest in, and an appreciation of, its place in our graphics art history.‖* *excerpted from A History and Bibliography of the Roycroft Printing Shop, ―Preface to the First Edition,‖ pp. v. • Esd Announces Restoration Project at Erie County Cultural and Arts Destination
Empire State Development News Press Office (716) 856-8111 www.nylovesbiz.com FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATE 9/22/2008 ESD ANNOUNCES RESTORATION PROJECT AT ERIE COUNTY CULTURAL AND ARTS DESTINATION Roycroft Campus Corporation to Reconstruct Former Power House Empire State Development today announced plans for the Roycroft Campus Corporation (RCC) to reconstruct and restore the historic Power House at the East Aurora-based Arts and Crafts cultural campus. The Roycroft complex will retain 96 full-time positions and RCC pledges to create an additional 12 full-time jobs in Western New York. The Campus was home to a significant cultural movement that influenced the nation and became a destination for master craftsmen and a gathering place of notable artists, authors, philosophers and powerbrokers. “The historic Roycroft campus brings tourists and additional revenue to the region,” said Governor David A. Paterson. “The campus housed a cultural movement that inspired the nation and continues to influence craftsmanship and philosophy today. As tourism is one of New York State’s most important industries, I am pleased to support the continued restoration and programming at this designated National Historic Landmark.” Empire State Development will provide a $1.5 million capital grant toward the reconstruction and restoration project. For this undertaking to move forward, RCC must match the grant by raising $1.5 million, or half of the estimated $3 million cost. The matching contribution may be obtained through any potential sources of philanthropic, public and private funds. The RCC has already raised $500,000 towards the matching contribution. The RCC recently took ownership of the former Power House with the assistance of The Margaret L.

Abstract This project defines and validates the concept of the Roycroft Campus as a living museum and explores how the implementation of a “living” component to its educational programming would strengthen visitor engagement. It also focuses on the various ways in which to fortify the utility and visibility of a museum within a community, demonstrating how the Roycroft Campus can become a center for community engagement and cultural development. Through this research, I present the Roycroft Campus’ potential as a living museum and have created an educational based event which will bring to life the year 1915 on the historic Campus grounds.

The Book Block began business over 40 years ago in Greenwich, Connecticut and now is located in Boynton Beach, Florida. Roycroft The story of Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters often has been told and continues to be a fascinating tale of a driven man and his accomplishments. To some, Hubbard was a visionary whose life was devoted to the execution of his artistic dreams. To the more cynical, Hubbard simply was a skillful promotor, the “P.T. Barnum of art” whose formidable persuasive abilities were honed during his earlier career as a soap salesman. Regardless of how Hubbard is viewed, he was the creative force behind the Roycroft community that began and thrived in East Aurora, New York. Modeled upon the Arts and Crafts revival in England popularized by William Morris, Roycroft, which was named after two seventeenth century English bookbinders, was founded in 1895, and grew to hundreds of craftsmen working in a variety of fields including furniture, metal, leather, and paper. At its zenith, the Roycroft “campus” included shops, employee housing, an inn for visitors, schools for employees, a baseball team, a marching band, a debating society, and a bank. Hubbard’s genius for promotion was relentlessly applied to spread the Roycroft word to middle class America.

It is not meant to be a scholarly treatise but more an introduction for beginners and the curious. It is our hope that as you read and begin to get a sense of the sweeping scope and dramatic impact the movement’s philosophy had on design and the craftsmanship evident in the works produced, that you will also gain an awareness and appreciation of the Two Red Roses Foundation’s decorative arts collection. The TRRF collection—believed to be among the most complete and important in the world—will be displayed in the Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement [MAACM] to be preserved, interpreted, and enjoyed by museum visitors in the future. • With Head, Heart, and Hands: Elbert Hubbard's Impact on B.J. Palmer
Chiropractic History Reprinted by permission of the Association for the History of Chiropractic Volume 23, No. 2 - 2003 27 With Head, Heart, and Hands: Elbert Hubbard's Impact on B.J. Palmer GLENDA WIESE, Ph.D.* Elbert Hubbard, the creator and developer of the Roycroft Arts and Crafts Community in East Aurora, New York, was a mentor to B.J. Palmer, the self-styled "developer" of chiropractic. This paper explores the relationship between Palmer, Hubbard, and chiropractic. The most visible sign of Hubbard's influence on B.J. Palmer was the creation of the Palmer Print Shop. Hubbard had instigated the Roycroft Press in 1895, and Palmer modeled his own print center, in a more modest way, after his mentor's. He also employed many of the marketing techniques to pro mote chiropractic that Hubbard used to promote the Roycroft books, furniture, and metal work. Palmer even styled his personal appearance after Hubbard's, complete with long hair pulled back with a band around the forehead, and a black flowing tie. When Hubbard went down with the Lusitania, B.J. purchased one of Hubbard's "tall-case" clocks, and proceeded to furnish much of the early Palmer School of Chiropractic (PSC) with the Roycroft pieces. Those pieces can still be viewed on the Palmer campus today. This paper will explore these themes in more depth. "Life Without Industry is Guilt: community eventually produced handmade furniture Industry Without Art Is Brutality." Elbert Hubbard (1898), leather goods (1905), pottery (1901), and metal work. Between 1895 and 1938 the Roycroft community The above quote synthesizes the Roycroft communi played a large role in the popularization of the arts and ty's dual themes of the inherent dignity of work and the crafts movement to middle-class America.
