It is distinguished from the sympatric B. zezera by the edge of the dorsal fin slightly convex (vs. concave) with indented margin in male and of the posterior margin of the caudal fin relatively shallow-forked (vs. deep-forked), a deep body and caudal peduncle, fewer lateral line scales (34-35 vs. 36-38) and the total numbers of vertebrae (34-35 vs. 36-38). It is dis- tinguished from Korean B. springeri by the absence of barbels (vs. presence) and its very thin lip (vs. fleshy). It belongs in the incompletely scaled group of this genus, but differs from all other species of this group except M. yaluensis, M. rapidus, and M. wulonghensis in the presence of a scaleless midventral region of the body extending more than two-thirds of the distance from the pectoral-fin insertion to the pelvic-fin insertion. This new species differs from M. yaluensis in the slightly concave or straight distal edge of the dorsal fin, interorbital width, and snout length; from M. rapidus in the number of perforated scales on the lateral line and number of pectoral-fin rays, and the placement of the anus; and from M. wulonghensis in having the two lateral lobes of the lower lip posteromedially disconnected, the shape of the median mental pad of the lower lip, and the number of circumpeduncular scales.

Recent phylogenetic studies have approached a consensus on the phylogenetic relationships of Cypriniformes and proposed a new phylogenetic classification of family- level groupings in Cypriniformes. The lack of a reference for the placement of genera amongst families has hampered the adoption of this phylogenetic classification more widely. We herein provide an updated compilation of the membership of genera to suprageneric taxa based on the latest phylogenetic classifications. We propose a new taxon: subfamily Esom- inae within Danionidae, for the genus Esomus.
