Theorizing the Transcendent Persona: Amelia Earhart’s Vision in The Fun of It Robin E. Jensen, Erin F. Doss, Claudia I. Janssen, & Sherrema A. Bower In this article, we define and theorize the ‘‘transcendent persona,’’ a discursive strategy in which a rhetor draws from a boundary-breaking accomplishment and utilizes the symbolic capital of that feat to persuasively delineate unconventional ways of communicating and behaving in society. Aviator Amelia Earhart’s autobiography The Fun of It (1932) functions as an instructive representative anecdote of this concept and demonstrates that the transcendent persona’s persuasive force hinges on one’s ability to balance distance from audiences with similarities to them.

FIFTY YEARS TOGETHER Through fifty years our college has lived, has grown in purpose, and expanded in idea. It started under the direction of Elizabeth Harrison, as a class for mothers who were interested in the kindergarten training for their five-year-old children and who were eager to see kindergartens added to the Public Schools. The College has increased in size so steadily that it has outgrown four different buildings. It has held to its aim, the training of progressive teachers in philosophy and in theory, who may give to children an education that is stimulating and purposeful. These years have not been without their trials and hardships, but the College has gone forward triumphantly until now, under the leadership of Edna Dean Baker, it can claim world recognition. In planning this book, we have endeavored to relate the history of the College in its true chronological order. We have tried to connect the outstanding events of our history with world events which have occurred during the same period.

  • Anne Morrow Lindbergh Was Critical to the Success of Charles’ Flights
CountHerHistory November 2009 AAUW-Illinois by Barbara Joan Zeitz Wife/Copilot: Anne Morrow Lindbergh was critical to the success of Charles’ flights. She was his radio operator, navigator, and copilot. After his New York to Paris solo flight, May 1927, Lucky Lindy had his choice of copilots. He chose Anne. They met that December when he flew the Spirit of St. Louis to Mexico at the invitation of US Ambassador, Dwight Morrow, Anne’s father. Charles was ready to move on from stunt flying, barnstorming, and competitive racing to serious flight explorations and he wanted to marry. And he wanted to marry a healthy woman who liked flying because he wanted his wife to be his flying companion on expeditions he planned to make. He set his sites on Anne whom he invited to go flying. If all went well in the air as he planned - well. He let her experience the controls and logged in fifty-five minutes as her first flight training. When she told him that night that she wanted to learn to fly, he smiled. They married in May 1929, honeymooned alone-together for three weeks roughing it on a thirty-eight-foot motorboat eating canned goods and drinking ginger ale. The honeymoon Charles planned previewed the couple’s flight adventures to come and provided a peek at his wife in such a situation, a situation Anne enjoyed quiet well. He began her formal flight training immediately with flight aerobatics and landings, pitch angles, bank angles, navigation, calculating arrival based on ground speed, etc. The following year she would fly more than 30,000 miles.
